Security Forces (SFs) on Janaury 29 arrested five militants of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), Lasting G Momin, Arnesh G Momin, Bosco Momin, Fedrick Rongrin and Jaro S Sangma at Dorangre village in West Khasi Hills District, reports Nagaland Post. SFs recovered two .32 pistols, two magazines along with seven rounds of live ammunition, three mobile phones along with three Indian SIM cards, 21 numbers of dry cells from the militants. “We have arrested five GNLA rebels from Dorangre village this morning in the wake of the ongoing combing operation to flush out the rebels from the area,” Sylvester Nongtnger, the Superintendent of Police of West Khasi Hills, said. “All the five rebels were prized catch for us as they were involved in extorting money from coal exporters to Bangladesh and drivers of coal-laden trucks in the area,” he said.

The Shillong Times reports that two militants of United A’chik Liberation Army (UALA) demanded ‘tax’ from a civilian ended up in a hospital with injuries leading to the death of one of them in a botched extortion drive at Darengre village on the outskirts of Tura town in West Garo hills District on February 1. The deceased Sanjay Ch Sangma and Bijoy Ch Sangma were extorting money from their victim when villagers rushed in and caught both of them. Police recovered from their possession a 9 mm caliber automatic and a 7.65 pistol with two magazines and three live rounds of ammunition. The two have been identified as wanted criminals from Bangladesh who were involved in a series of cases ranging from gun running, extortion to kidnappings.

The Shillong Times reports on February 8 that South Garo Hills Police have uncovered a close nexus between the Breakaway faction of Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC-B) outfit and the Garo National Liberation Army faction (GNLA-F) that is preparing to float a new organization called the United Peoples’ Revolutionary Alliance (UPRA). Police uncovered the close links between the GNLA-F led by Reding T Sangma and the ANVC-B after a camp of the latter was busted near Mindikgre (South Garo Hills District) in the morning of February 7 in which the documents and seals of the new organization along with one shot gun, a revolver, four rounds of 7.62 ammo, two rounds of 7.65 ammo, blank ANVC-B letter pads with the signature of the outfit’s ‘finance secretary’ Sengdura and also demand notes made out in the name of the rival United A’chik Liberation Army (UALA) were recovered. A receipt book was made in the name of the UPRA with a seal of the ‘chairman’ was found. It is not known who the chairman or cadres of the new organization are but Police suspects Reading and his GNLA faction that was operating in the same area.

R. Natal from a bus while they were proceeding towards Chokpot area in South Garo Hills, bordering Bangladesh to meet their leaders,” West Garo Hills District SP Mukesh Kumar Singh said. The other arrested ASAK cadres have been identified as Netun N.Sangma, Damin. Ch. Sangma and Elkin K Sangma. East Garo Hills District Police intercepted a sports utility vehicle carrying arms consignment that had been dispatched from Karbi Anglong (Assam) for the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) in Williamnagar in East Garo Hills District in the evening of March 10. Police found three AK rifles with five magazine containers and 124 rounds of live ammunition. The two carriers of the consignment -Jatin Marak and Mintu Das, both hailing from Karbi Anglong District, were taken into custody and during interrogation revealed to Police that the GNLA was to take over the weapons at Williamnagar from where it was to make its way into the outfit’s camps.

The Shillong Times reports that suspected Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants attacked a Special Weapon and Tactic (SWAT) team at Ambari near Shallang in West Khasi Hills District in the morning of March 22. GNLA militants numbering around 12 to 14 carrying heavy arms came to Songsak toll gate for extorting money to the trucks. Sallang Police after getting the information about the presence of GNLA rebels in the area rushed a SWAT team to the spot. GNLA militants attacked the Swat team as soon as it reached the spot. The exchange fire continued for 10 to 15 minutes and GNLA rebels later escaped to a thick forest at Ambari. Police informed that one AK 47 dummy was recovered from the encounter site. He was identified as Muhammad Abul Mandal (36) from Jagighopa of Goalpara District, Assam. Superintendent of Police (SP), West Khasi Hills District, S. Nongtnger, said, “On seeing the Police, the militants tried to flee in a Scorpio vehicle. When the vehicle did not stop despite our warnings, we shot at its tyres, bring it to a halt.” The militants, numbering about four, tried to escape but one of them was gunned down while others managed to escape, he said adding that Police could not effectively fire due to presence of some shops in the area. The Shillong Times reports that a suspected militant of United A’chik Liberation Army (UALA) identified as Kalsen Momin was arrested with bullet injuries during a botched attack on a petrol station in Williamnagar town in East Garo Hills District by the militants belonging to the outfit, in the afternoon of April 30. The injured militant was arrested from a village across the Simsang river after Police teams tracked his movement from the blood trail left behind at the scene of the attack. A six-member group of UALA militants is said to have crossed over from across the Simsang river into Williamnagar to target the Janusa petrol pump located on the Williamnagar-Nengkhra road. From their hideout they opened indiscriminate fire towards the petrol pump damaging pillars and walls of the station. The arrested suspect however, continued to maintain his innocence claiming that he was a victim of militants’ ire. Police recovered as many as 25 empty rounds of AK ammunition that was fired from the attack site.

The slain militants have been identified as Sengnang N Sangma, Batnagar R Marak, Dikdik D Momin, Kallam R Marak and Kekil R Marak The Operation was launched after getting reports about the presence of a large group of armed men in a makeshift camp close to family residence of the outfit’s ‘chairman’ Singbirth Marak alias Norrok X Momin. However he along with six others managed to escape during the fire fight. There were reportedly as many as 30 cadres in two separate locations when the raid was conducted. Police arrested three cadres of the A’chik Songna An’pachakgipa Kotok (ASAK) militant group from Asanang, about 18km from Tura municipality in West Garo Hills District on May 24, reports The Telegraph. Two cadres were arrested from a private vehicle on its way to Tura from Nagaland via Guwahati. Based on information received from the arrested persons, another cadre was arrested from Tura. The two have been identified as Imti Wabang (34), and Robinson Sangma (29). Police recovered 107 rounds of .32 and 48 rounds of .22 bullets, which were hidden in their shoes. Remote detonators were being used to trigger the IED, which has worried the SFs. Police also recovered an AK-56 rifle, 66 bullets, two AK magazines, one 7.65mm pistol, one pistol magazine, 3 live rounds of a 7.65mm pistol, a walkie-talkie, two plastic explosives, three detonators, approximately 33,000 in cash and demand notes of the GNLA. Police suspect that abduction was planned by militant identified as Kimpret, the ‘area commander’ of GNLA in Dadenggre. The Inspector-General of Police (IG) G.H.P. Raju stated “The GNLA and ULFA are on an abduction spree in Dadenggre, Phulbari and Tikrikilla areas and have been sharing their loot. ULFA is taking the support of the GNLA in this area for shelter and finance.” The Shillong Times further adds that the slain ULFA militant was trained in the assembling and use of Improvised Explosives Device (IED) and was with the GNLA to target Police teams on the move. The incident happened when Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Commandos of South Garo Hills Police came across the ASAK militants holed up inside an isolated thatched house outside of Rongaigittim village in the District. The militants who were keeping watch spotted the Police team and opened fire and in the encounter one of the militants was shot dead. From the encounter site Police recovered an INSAS rifle with a magazine and 14 rounds, a 9 MM pistol with two rounds, a single barrel shotgun (SBBL) with two rounds, a wireless receiver handset, demand notes and camouflage uniforms. Manoranjan Das, a welder working for a local contractor, was supervising the construction of a hanging bridge of the Border Area Development project at Rewak when a group of six to eight militants belonging to ASAK outfit picked him up from his work place in the night of June 27.

The Shillong Times reports that Tura Police, on July 26 raided a camp of the Breakaway faction of Achik national Volunteer Council (ANVC-B) in Edenbari (West Garo Hills) and seized an assortment of weapons and arrested as many as 24 cadres over the outfit’s alleged role in the recent attacks on migrant labourers that has left two dead in Tura in West Garo Hills recently. Seven other militants managed to escape the Police dragnet as they happened to be absent from the camp when the raid took place. One of the militants arrested include the camp in-charge of the outfit Mastin Ch Sangma. A search of the camp premises by Security Forces led to the recovery of six shotguns, a double barrel gun, a .22 modified pistol and a 7.65 automatic pistol with one magazine, 25 shotgun ammunition, four 7.65 and four .22 calibre rounds. Two motorcycles have also been confiscated from the camp. There has been a spate of attacks on migrant workers from Assam in and around Tura town leading to much anger in the neighbouring State. Two labourers, hailing from Mancachar area of Dhubri (Assam) were found murdered in Tura in the last one week (July 21 and July 24) with no breakthrough into both cases.

Three United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militants and their over ground worker have been arrested separately along with explosives on the Garo Hills side of the inter-State border close to Assam in North Garo Hills District in the night of August 9. North Garo Hills Police arrested a linkman of the ULFA identified as Manuel Marak at Assam Gate in Mendipathar after receiving a tip off from their counterparts in Goalpara District of Assam. Based on his confession, a joint search operation by North Garo Hills and Assam Police led to the arrest of three ULFA militants from the village along with a sizable amount of explosives and detonators. The arrested militants – Taison Rabha, Ujira Rabha and Rupjyoti Rabha – were found to have in their possession 30 gelatin sticks, a .22 pistol with 19 rounds, a roll of cortex, a remote control device to detonate explosives along with eight numbers of pencil batteries and five mobile phones. The militants were reportedly planning to conduct subversive activities along the Assam- Garo Hills border in the run up to the Independence Day celebrations. Police sources reveal that the arrested members are part of the same group that triggered a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on July 23 in which one person was killed and three others seriously injured.

The Shillong Times reports that on August 21 Security Forces (SFs) raided a joint makeshift camp of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) and United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) at Songma Enggok area under Arbela range in East Garo Hills District and killed two GNLA militant and an ULFA militant. The ULFA militant killed is suspected to be a militant identified as Karamchand. According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Davis Nestell Marak there were around 40 militants in the camp including Williamnagar 'area commander', Jimmy Momin who managed to escape. SFs recovered a Self Loading Rifle (SLR) with 5 magazines, a 7.65 pistol with 3 magazines, one 9 mm pistol along with a magazine, 2 detonators, incriminating documents, 5 SIM cards, 3 mobile phones, 2 wireless handsets, and camouflage sets along with personnel belongings of the militants. The Shillong Times reports that on September 18 a former Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militant identified as Teseng Sangma who left the outfit to form his own group was killed in an encounter with a joint team of North Garo Hills Police and Army. Police with support of Army unit based at Damra (Assam) launched an operation in the vicinity of Bangsi Minol village in North Garo Hills. In the encounter another militant identified as Gobin Sangma managed to escape. An automatic Indian Small Arms System (INSAS) rifle along with magazine holding eight live rounds of ammunition were recovered from the encounter site. Teseng Sangma who had joined GNLA in 2012 had deserted GNLA along with Gobin Sangma few months back to start their own organization to extort money. A Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militant identified as Griksang Marak alias Chuang was arrested from Salpara area of Mendipather in East Garo Hills District on October 23, reports The Shillong Times. He later Police to a hideout inside a forest near Rongcheng village West Khasi Hills District where he had concealed a Chinese Sniper Rifle along with an AK rifle and a .303 rifle Police also recovered as many as 160 rounds of ammunition with four magazines meant for the sniper rifle, an AK magazine containing 35 rounds and four .303 calibre bullets. A wireless handset along with a GNLA training manual, two mobile phones, sim cards were also recovered from the hideout. The militant was arrested from the house of a woman collaborator identified as Gretwila R Marak. Her brother, Dikrak R Marak was arrested for harbouring the militant. Griksang Marak also confessed that he was part of a three-member gang that killed four other militants belonging to the Independent faction of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-I) and GNLA before escaping with the arms on September 13.Superindendent of Police (SP) J F K Marak stated that “He revealed to us that he along with two other cadres had differences with their camp commander and later shot dead four militants before escaping with the three weapons that have all been recovered by us”, .The militants killed their superiors in the camp which was located in a remote part of Mangsang area of East Garo Hills close to the border with West Khasi Hills District and dumped the bodies there itself before decamping with the weapons. The two militants of ULFA-I militants who were killed in that fratricidal fight are believed to have been known as Bulbul and Wakang. The two GNLA militants who were killed have been identified as ‘camp commander’ Stil and Mandal .The two accomplices of the arrested militant identified as Darmen and Jagol continue to remain at large.

Sangma stated, “There were around 4-5 militants who opened fire on seeing our teams approaching. We returned fire and the ultras fled leaving behind two hand grenades, a battery along with some camouflage uniforms and caps and demand notes of GNLA.” He added that GNLA leaders, identified as Hedeo and Jangjang, were believed to involve in planning to carry out an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast on a potential target travelling through the road when police raided the hideout. Ampati is the constituency of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma. An IED weighing 6 kilogram with two detonators and a 9 mm pistol with few live rounds were recovered from him. The arrested militant has revealed that the IED blast, on November 18 which killed two Police men was masterminded by Nangalbibra (East Garo Hills) ‘area commander’ Rakkam with the active support of GNLA cadres Geloram, Timtam, Sanja, Mangsang and others. The arrested militant, according to Police stated that that he along with his team was dispatched by Sohan Shira, the ‘chief’ of GNLA, to plant the bomb and target Ampati. He also said that several other teams of GNLA militants have already been dispatched to other Districts of Garo Hills on a similar ‘operation’ to trigger blasts. Assam Tribune further adds that the arrested militant is suspected to have joined the Achik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF) this August. General Secretary of a local unit of an Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) and the Nokma (headman) of Chepagre village in West Garo Hills District near Ampati were also part of the conspiracy.
