A heavy exchange of fire took place between Security Forces and the Achik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF) militants at Pakgregittim under Rongjeng Police Station in the East Garo Hills District on January 19, reports The Shillong Times. However, there was no report of any casualty or injury. A walkie-talkie, three mobile phones and some documents were recovered from the site of the operation. Superintendent of Police Davis Marak said the AMEF militants, led by its ‘deputy chief’ Goran, had abducted four traders from Mangsang area but were later released. Meanwhile, the Police have arrested a resident of the village in connection with the kidnapping case and for allegedly harboring the militants. “He used to bring food and utilities to both the people kidnapped as well as the militants,” he said.

Assistant teacher of Tura Christian Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Iqbal Rafique, who was abducted on February 1, 2015, was released on February 5, reports The Shillong Times. According to West Garo Hills Police, a former militant of the Breakaway faction of Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC-B), identified as Silgrak Sangma was arrested on February 4 near the Nehru Park area in Danakgre in West Garo Hills in connection with the abduction. A 9 mm pistol with five live rounds of ammunition was also recovered from his possession. The former militant had come to pick up the ransom in exchange for Rafique, along with two others who managed to escape. Later an amount of INR 500000 meant as ransom was also recovered from the family of the victim. It is unclear if any ransom was paid to the abductors.

Police on February 6 arrested A’chik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF) ‘general secretary’, identified as Simseng G Momin, reports The Shillong Times. He was arrested from West Garo Hills District, after he had fled to escape a raid on his home in Rongjeng in East Garo Hills District by Rongjeng Police on the same day. Police recovered explosives, detonators, INR 1500000 along with some incriminating documents and a laptop. District Police chief stated that Simseng G Momin was also the General Secretary of Rongjeng unit of Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), a civilian organisation. Another AMEF militant identified as Metronath Marak, residing in proper Chandmari in West Garo Hills District, who was to give shelter to Simseng G Momin was also arrested. A surrendered A'chik Songna An'pachakgipa Kotok (ASAK) militant, who was the ‘area commander’ of ‘southern command’, identified as Dimsrang M Sangma alias Nawal was arrested by South Garo Hills District for his alleged involvement in the abduction of State Bank of India (SBI) official SK Mishra. The bank official was abducted on August 5 at Barengapara road in Cherengpara village in West Garo Hills District. According to police, one of the key conspirators behind the abduction, Dimsrang had surrendered before Border Security Force (BSF) on January 13.

On April 7 Police arrested Chandan Singh working for the Tura bonded warehouse, a liquor wholesale distributor, while he was preparing to deliver a sum of money demanded by the GNLA. GNLA had reportedly demanded INR 300,000 from the bonded warehouse and Singh was supposed to deliver the money. On Chandan Singhs lead, Tura Police went to Sangknigre in South Garo Hills District and arrested Dominic Marak and Sengkal T Sangma. They were supposed to collect the extortion money and deliver it to the GNLA ‘area commander’ Karak Momin alias Hedeo. In the first instance, Police raided Arenggre village in Betasing and rescued Sudhir Haldar (63), a construction manager with a Garo Hills based company and arrested three gang members. Haldar was abducted on May 28 while visiting Hajongpara village in Betasing block. The three arrested men have been identified as Newbirth Marak (21), Phang Sangma (18), and Emlath Sangma (18) all hailing from Jelbongpara village of Betasing. Following their arrest, a second operation was launched the same night at Chondon Nokatgre village of Betasing to nab LAMA Chief, Goran who however escaped. The operation led to the rescue of another trader identified as Hafizur Rahman. Rahman is a resident of Fekamari village in South Salmara, Dhubri District of Assam. He was kidnapped while travelling through Garo Hills. The new militant group LAMA is headed by former A'chik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF) ‘action commander’ Goran.

The Telegraph further adds that the militants have been camping in the District for around two months now, disguising themselves as coal labourers. A report by union Ministry of Home Affairs (UMHA) had pointed out that Independent faction if United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-I), NDFB-IKS and Isak-Muivah faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM) have been using Garo Hills as a corridor to Bangladesh. Police arrested Jerome Momin, the former commander- in-chief of Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC), currently under peace pact, for allegedly selling sophisticated weapons and ammunition to self styled commander in chief of banned Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), Sohan D Shira, in exchange of money worth INR 1.7 million. Police personnel from Williamnagar, the headquarters of East Garo Hills District, raided the house of Jerome, and arrested him in connection with selling of weapons to GNLA, a revelation which will have far reaching consequences for the disbanded ANVC which is still waiting for the fulfillment of Agreed Text of Settlement signed in September last year. The four cadres are identified as - Porkash D Sangma (23), of Dobetkalgre, Williamnagar, East Garo Hills, Polendro Ch Momin (34), of Kolligre, Kalaichar, South West Garo Hills, Anat Koch (23) of Barengapara, Dalu, West Garo Hills and, Jhotiram Koch (36) of Kalipara village in Kalaichar, South West Garo Hills. According to Police, during preliminary investigation it was revealed that the four arrested belonged to United A’chik Liberation Army (UALA). The Maruti car used by the gang for abducting the employee was also seized by Police. They arrested cadres also confessed that INR 150,000 was received as ransom from the relatives on the night of November 25 at Garobada area. It may be mentioned that Braj Kishore Thakur was abducted on November 22, while he was supervising the project work at Malchapara area of Betasing in South West Garo Hills District.

One hard core Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) cadre, identified as Balsrang Ch Momin (23) was arrested by Tura Police when he came to collect extortion money from victims from Tura in West Garo Hills District on December 8, reports The Sentinel. According to Inspector General - Operations (IG) GHP Raju, Balsrang was using black SIM cards to threaten the victims. His SIM cards were seized by Police. The arrested GNLA cadre also revealed the modus operandi of extortion of the GNLA from the businessmen and government servants. “They send SMS to these people after obtaining their numbers from their office staff or workers working in the shops,” Raju said. He also revealed that some people voluntarily shared the mobile numbers of officers and business people to GNLA and other militant groups to settle personal scores. According to Police, GNLA sends extortion SMSs to these victims ranging from INR 50 lakh to INR 10 lakh.

Three hardcore A'chik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF) cadres identified as Pendu Sangma, Joy Arengh and Tanisha Sangma, who happens to be the girlfriend of an AMEF cadre known as Sakrem, were arrested during a routine vehicle checking undertaken by Rongjeng Police in East Garo Hills District on December 17, reports The Shillong times. On the leading of Pendu Sangma, a team of Rongjeng Police went to Jangchigittim, Nongshram via Rongdu Reserve and found the hideout where AMEF cadres led by their new 'chairman' Matchang and new 'commander-in-chief (C-in-C)' Cheang were staying in the bachelor house (Nokpante) of Pendu Sangma. When the Police team ordered the militants to surrender they opened fire at the Police team leading to a brief exchange of fire. In the exchange of fire one militant identified as Lekichand Sangma of Jangchigittim received bullet injury on the leg and was arrested and given medical treatment at Rongjeng CHC. Matchang is also suspected to have sustained bullet injury on his stomach. Two other cadres, identified as Chandra Marak of Dekmik and Itdom Marak of Dekmik, were also arrested from the spot. Police also recovered an Self-Loading Rifle (SLR) magazine and 29 live SLR rounds, one 9mm magazine and two live 9mm rounds and Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) ID card of Matchang Marak, 20 nos. of AMEF demand notes, round seal of AMEF, one black magazine pouch and two empty cases of SLR. Police informed that search operations were continuing to trace the other AMEF militants who escaped from the hideout.
