Security Forces (SFs) on Janaury 29 arrested five militants of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), Lasting G Momin, Arnesh G Momin, Bosco Momin, Fedrick Rongrin and Jaro S Sangma at Dorangre village in West Khasi Hills District, reports Nagaland Post. SFs recovered two .32 pistols, two magazines along with seven rounds of live ammunition, three mobile phones along with three Indian SIM cards, 21 numbers of dry cells from the militants. “We have arrested five GNLA rebels from Dorangre village this morning in the wake of the ongoing combing operation to flush out the rebels from the area,” Sylvester Nongtnger, the Superintendent of Police of West Khasi Hills, said. “All the five rebels were prized catch for us as they were involved in extorting money from coal exporters to Bangladesh and drivers of coal-laden trucks in the area,” he said.

The Shillong Times reports that a suspected militant of United A’chik Liberation Army (UALA) identified as Kalsen Momin was arrested with bullet injuries during a botched attack on a petrol station in Williamnagar town in East Garo Hills District by the militants belonging to the outfit, in the afternoon of April 30. The injured militant was arrested from a village across the Simsang river after Police teams tracked his movement from the blood trail left behind at the scene of the attack. A six-member group of UALA militants is said to have crossed over from across the Simsang river into Williamnagar to target the Janusa petrol pump located on the Williamnagar-Nengkhra road. From their hideout they opened indiscriminate fire towards the petrol pump damaging pillars and walls of the station. The arrested suspect however, continued to maintain his innocence claiming that he was a victim of militants’ ire. Police recovered as many as 25 empty rounds of AK ammunition that was fired from the attack site.

Kharbani and four others arrested from Rangthong village, South West Khasi Hills when they were on their way to Shillong on May 2. “We had specific input that Kharbani recently had gone to Bangladesh to meet the top leaders of the HNLC,” Police sources said. It is also revealed that among those arrested along with Kharbani, one was a former member of the banned outfit. All of them were produced in a court on May 3. The court, meanwhile, remanded them in five-day Police custody. “All the arrested are having links with HNLC. We have also seized some demand notes along with the letter heads of the banned outfit,” a senior police official said. Replying to a query, the senior Police also informed that the HANM president was helping the outfit in various ways including by generating fund for the council. The HANM president was arrested earlier on two occasions for illegal possession of arms.

Two cadres were arrested from a private vehicle on its way to Tura from Nagaland via Guwahati. Based on information received from the arrested persons, another cadre was arrested from Tura. The two have been identified as Imti Wabang (34), and Robinson Sangma (29). Police recovered 107 rounds of .32 and 48 rounds of .22 bullets, which were hidden in their shoes. On their revelation, another two militants were arrested from Williamnagar (East Garo Hills District) supermarket and another militant was arrested from Chidakgre area, on the outskirts of Williamnagar. Later, Police learned that ASAK militants were proceeding towards Rongjeng in East Garo Hills District and arrested another three militants. Three automatic pistols, two knives, 25 rounds of bullets, mobile phones, SIM cards, wireless sets, demand notes and some money were recovered from the militants. The ASAK militants had allegedly served demand notes to market committees, a road construction company and small businessmen in Williamnagar area. The extortion demand ranged from INR 50,000 to INR 5 million. The Shillong Times identified the other arrested militants as Rikran G Momin, Sabat R Marak, Selvi Arengh, Isak M Sangma, Walman M Sangma, Pagal Sangma alias Balwa, and Ninibirth R Sangma.

The Shillong Times reports that Tura Police, on July 26 raided a camp of the Breakaway faction of Achik national Volunteer Council (ANVC-B) in Edenbari (West Garo Hills) and seized an assortment of weapons and arrested as many as 24 cadres over the outfit’s alleged role in the recent attacks on migrant labourers that has left two dead in Tura in West Garo Hills recently. Seven other militants managed to escape the Police dragnet as they happened to be absent from the camp when the raid took place. One of the militants arrested include the camp in-charge of the outfit Mastin Ch Sangma. A search of the camp premises by Security Forces led to the recovery of six shotguns, a double barrel gun, a .22 modified pistol and a 7.65 automatic pistol with one magazine, 25 shotgun ammunition, four 7.65 and four .22 calibre rounds. Two motorcycles have also been confiscated from the camp. There has been a spate of attacks on migrant workers from Assam in and around Tura town leading to much anger in the neighbouring State. Two labourers, hailing from Mancachar area of Dhubri (Assam) were found murdered in Tura in the last one week (July 21 and July 24) with no breakthrough into both cases.

Three United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militants and their over ground worker have been arrested separately along with explosives on the Garo Hills side of the inter-State border close to Assam in North Garo Hills District in the night of August 9. North Garo Hills Police arrested a linkman of the ULFA identified as Manuel Marak at Assam Gate in Mendipathar after receiving a tip off from their counterparts in Goalpara District of Assam. Based on his confession, a joint search operation by North Garo Hills and Assam Police led to the arrest of three ULFA militants from the village along with a sizable amount of explosives and detonators. The arrested militants – Taison Rabha, Ujira Rabha and Rupjyoti Rabha – were found to have in their possession 30 gelatin sticks, a .22 pistol with 19 rounds, a roll of cortex, a remote control device to detonate explosives along with eight numbers of pencil batteries and five mobile phones. The militants were reportedly planning to conduct subversive activities along the Assam- Garo Hills border in the run up to the Independence Day celebrations. Police sources reveal that the arrested members are part of the same group that triggered a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on July 23 in which one person was killed and three others seriously injured.

Mingnam K. Sangma was arrested from his wife’s home in Rongtu village of Bajengdoba in North Garo Hills. He hailed from Gosingpita village and was originally with the Breakaway faction of the Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC-B) group before joining the LAEF. Based on his leads, a joint team of Garo Hills and Assam Police raided Garo Kasumari village in Goalpara District and arrested the ‘commander of the finance unit’ of LAEF Sengrak K Marak (23). Through their revelations, Police know that the new ‘chairman’ of LAEF is one Biltang while Mathew Marak of Bakrapur village of Assam is the ‘military chief’. Mathew was a senior cadre who was arrested with three other cadres in Ri-Bhoi District of Meghalaya some years ago. He spent some time in Jowai Jail before securing bail and returning to revive his old outfit. The outfit had virtually ceased to exist following the killing of their ‘military chief’ and former police commando Peter Marak in 2006-07. The arrested duo has revealed to police that there are as many as thirteen AK rifles, ten numbers of 9mm pistols and other assortment of weapons and grenades including rocket propelled grenades (RPGs) in just two command structures of the group.

Police busted a Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) camp at Sakalgre deep inside the Nokrek jungle in West Garo Hills District after a brief fire fight on October 14, reports The Sentinel. Police on October 13 had detained an individual, identified as Sengrak Momin, in Rongram (West Garo Hills District) who led them to the hideout. Police said that during the raid Baichung, an ‘area commander’ and Jarek both senior members of the outfit managed to escape. One SBBL (smooth bore breech loading gun) gun, three country made shotguns, one 7.65 magazine, four mobile phones, detonators, demand notes and other incriminating documents were recovered from the camp.

The Telegraph reports that a trader identified as Bharat Singh Sekhawat, who was abducted on October 15 from Samanda village in East Garo Hills District by Achik Matgric Elite Force (AMEF) militants was killed by the militants on October 21.His body was exhumed on October 24 from the other side of the Simsang river in Denamgre village in East Garo Hills District. Davies Marak, superintendent of police (SP), East Garo Hills stated that “After receiving the payment on October 21, the outfit killed Sekhawat the same day.” The five AMEF militants Raksing Ch Marak, Bikash M Sangma, Dengcheng N Sangma, Minseng M Marak and Bikam Ch Marak who had surrendered on October 22, were arrested by Police for their role in the abduction and killing of the trader. The Shillong Times further adds that the militants had demanded a ransom of INR 1 billion. Later, the family of Shekhawat paid INR 1.6 million to the abductors as ransom amount but despite payment of the ransom amount, he was killed.

The cadres have been identified as Suraj Hajong (22), Hiran Rabha (17), Vikas Rabha (20), Mingson Rabha (20), Elam Rabha (60), and Korton Rabha (22) and all of them were from Pedaldoba village under Tikrikilla Police Station in the District. Six 9mm pistols, 20 live rounds of ammunition and two hand grenades were recovered from their possession.

A Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militant identified as Griksang Marak alias Chuang was arrested from Salpara area of Mendipather in East Garo Hills District on October 23, reports The Shillong Times. He later Police to a hideout inside a forest near Rongcheng village West Khasi Hills District where he had concealed a Chinese Sniper Rifle along with an AK rifle and a .303 rifle Police also recovered as many as 160 rounds of ammunition with four magazines meant for the sniper rifle, an AK magazine containing 35 rounds and four .303 calibre bullets. A wireless handset along with a GNLA training manual, two mobile phones, sim cards were also recovered from the hideout. The militant was arrested from the house of a woman collaborator identified as Gretwila R Marak. Her brother, Dikrak R Marak was arrested for harbouring the militant. Griksang Marak also confessed that he was part of a three-member gang that killed four other militants belonging to the Independent faction of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-I) and GNLA before escaping with the arms on September 13.Superindendent of Police (SP) J F K Marak stated that “He revealed to us that he along with two other cadres had differences with their camp commander and later shot dead four militants before escaping with the three weapons that have all been recovered by us”, .The militants killed their superiors in the camp which was located in a remote part of Mangsang area of East Garo Hills close to the border with West Khasi Hills District and dumped the bodies there itself before decamping with the weapons. The two militants of ULFA-I militants who were killed in that fratricidal fight are believed to have been known as Bulbul and Wakang. The two GNLA militants who were killed have been identified as ‘camp commander’ Stil and Mandal .The two accomplices of the arrested militant identified as Darmen and Jagol continue to remain at large.

They confessed that they were tasked with the job of serving demand notes and planning abductions of businessmen on the orders of UALA ‘chairman’ Novembirth Marak alias Chiindik Marak who had been arrested from a nursing home in Guwahati in Assam on June 14. Marak has since been out on bail and has reportedly re-established links with UALA and begun planning operations to extort money from traders and businessmen. One of the arrestees, Selbith, is a family relative of Novembirth Marak.

Seven Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants, including a militant identified as Milton were arrested with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), on November 19, from Ampati in South West Garo Hills District, reports The Shillong Times. Ampati is the constituency of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma. An IED weighing 6 kilogram with two detonators and a 9 mm pistol with few live rounds were recovered from him. The arrested militant has revealed that the IED blast, on November 18 which killed two Police men was masterminded by Nangalbibra (East Garo Hills) ‘area commander’ Rakkam with the active support of GNLA cadres Geloram, Timtam, Sanja, Mangsang and others. The arrested militant, according to Police stated that that he along with his team was dispatched by Sohan Shira, the ‘chief’ of GNLA, to plant the bomb and target Ampati. He also said that several other teams of GNLA militants have already been dispatched to other Districts of Garo Hills on a similar ‘operation’ to trigger blasts. Assam Tribune further adds that the arrested militant is suspected to have joined the Achik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF) this August. General Secretary of a local unit of an Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) and the Nokma (headman) of Chepagre village in West Garo Hills District near Ampati were also part of the conspiracy.
