Two People’s United Liberation Front (PULF) militants, Mohammed Firoz alias Yaras and Mohammed Ataf Ali alias Kora, were arrested during two separate search operations at Hatta Golapati area and Kshetri Awang Leikai in the Imphal East district on February 16, according to Sangai Express. One 9-mm pistol loaded with live rounds of ammunition was recovered from Kora’s possession. He joined the PULF in 2008 through one Mohammed Faleir and now operating under the ‘command’ of ‘s/s army chief’ Mohammed Zakir.

Two gunrunners, identified as Athokpam Tenzing Singh alias Tejbaba and Koijam Herachandra, were arrested in a joint raid conducted by Bishnupur district police and Imphal East district police at Bashikhong in the Imphal East district on the same day, reports Telegraph. Two hand grenades, nine detonators, 94 bullets of 9-mm pistol, two bullets of .38-calibre revolver and two Nokia mobile handsets, SIM cards and one vehicle were recovered from them. According to police sources, they had procured the ammunition from Chandel district and were planning to hand over the ammunition to militants belonging to the Dimasa group of Karbi Anglong district in the neighbouring State of Assam.

Two Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) cadres, Sougaijam Santosh alias Rishi and Laishram Sunil alias Amujao, were arrested by Imphal East district police commandos during a search operation on March 3 in front of the Central Reserve Police Force camp at Mantripukhri. While one magazine of M-20 pistol loaded with 3 live rounds of 9 mm and 6 nos. of AK-47 ammunition were recovered from Santosh, one magazine of .32 pistol loaded with 2 live rounds of .32 ammunition were recovered from the possession of Sunil. They confessed that they were operating under the command of one Sana Macha of the KYKL. On the same day, one People’s United Liberation Front (PULF) cadre, Mohammed Najir Ahamed alias Ningthem alias Laskar, was arrested by police during another search operation at Hatta Golapati in the Imphal East district. He confessed that he joined the outfit in March 2007 through one Mohammmed Khalique of Yairipok Ningthounai and was operating in the ‘finance section’ of the PULF.

One .32 pistol, two magazines with five live rounds, one 9-mm round, a mobile phone handset, three strips of Dexamethasone tablets and one driving licence registered in the name of one Mohammed Fazal Ali were recovered from the possession of the slain militant. Later, family members identified the dead body of Mohammed Azad Khan, a member of the Hayel Hangoon gram panchayat (village local self government institution) under ward 7/2 in the Thoubal district, on November 9. The slain person belonged to Samthel village where local people protested against his killing.

Another cadre of the same faction, identified as Kangujam Sanjoy, was arrested by a combined team of Imphal East district police commandos and Border Security Force personnel from Nongren. Sanjoy confessed during his interrogation that he joined the outfit in February 2008 and he engaged in extortion of money from the education directorate at Lamphelpat and trading centers. He was also involved in transportation of arms and ammunition. One more KCP cadre, identified as Bikram, was arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel from Wabagai Bazaar Lamkhai under Kakching police station in the Thoubal district on November 15, according to Sangai Express. 25 live rounds of AK ammunition were recovered from his confession. A cadre of the Azad faction of the PULF, identified as Mohammed Abdul Rehman alias Ithem, was also arrested by the Assam Rifles from Wangjing Bazaar on the same day.

The encounter took place when Kokai was returning from outside Manipur to hold a meeting in the Koirengei area. While two other militants managed to escape from the encounter site, a 9-mm pistol loaded with four live rounds of ammunition was recovered from the possession of the slain militant. Police further said that the slain militant could be the chief of the outfit.
