ICS cadres enforced a daylong hartal (general shut down) in Chapainawabganj and Rajshahi Districts amid stray incidents on April 15, reports The Daily Star. In Chapainawabganj District, ICS cadres clashed with Police when the pro-hartal processionists’ hurled brick chips at the law enforcers. Police fired at least eight rounds of bullets from shotgun to disperse the cadres equipped with bamboo sticks. Police arrested one ICS cadre after the clash. On April 23 (today), five cadres of ICS were arrested in Dhaka city’s Adabar and Dhaka University campus. During a drive at a house in Adabar area, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Mobarak Hossain, education secretary of ICS, and Russell Ahmed, ICS Central Committee member, with computers and books and CDs on jihad. The two are accused in various cases filed with different Police stations. Meanwhile, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of Awami League (AL) detained three Dhaka University students at Bangabandhu Hall on the campus, suspecting them as ICS cadres and handed over to Police. The deceased was identified as Mansur Prodhaniya (24), president of ward no 3 unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI). He was a student of a private university of city’s Uttara area. Seven of ICS cadres also sustained bullet injuries. Police arrested cadres at the clash. Abul Kashem (30), a member of the Railway Security Force, died when two young people exploded a crude bomb on his face on the platform at the Kamalapur Railway Station of Dhaka City. Two youths who were carrying the bomb were also injured in the blast. Police said two youths — Alam (18) and Aminul (16) — were entering the railway station through the rail tracks from a level crossing. As the two youths reached beat No 17 of the station, railway security guard Kashem challenged them. Sensing danger, Aminul hurled the bag containing the bomb at the face of Kashem and soon it went off with a big bang, killing Kashem on the spot and injuring Alam and Aminul themselves.

Police intelligence officials in Agartala (Tripura) on January 4 said Ranjit was arrested from a posh location in Dhaka on December 30 and Biswamohan on December 23 last from nearby areas. Both the militant leaders were arrested by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). The RAB members, after receiving specific information, surrounded the flats in Dhaka and arrested the militant leaders, a source said. JeI-ICS enforced the dawn-to-dusk general strike in protest against what it claimed ‘the government conspiracy to kill JeI leaders in the name of judgement.’ Of the deceased, a local leader of the ruling Awami League (AL) was beaten to death by JeI and ICS cadres in Satkhira District and a JeI cadre and an ICS cadre were shot dead during a clash with the law enforcers in Chapainawabganj District, while two ICS cadres were lynched by villagers in Kushtia District. During the shutdown, the cadres of JeI-ICS vandalised and set on fire several hundred vehicles including Police vans. They also snatched away firearms from Police during the clashes. Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Sanwar said that Apu was an activist of the Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, a major front organisation the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), in Comilla town (Comilla District) and had been involved in arms smuggling for around seven years. “An opposition leader of the city’s Mirpur area had asked Apu to bring him 15 firearms before the upcoming elections. The Border Security Force (BSF) has sought information from Bangladesh Border Guards (BGB) about three collaborators of National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) who were arrested by the Bangladeshi force from Rabisundar Karabarip Para village under Matiranga subdivision in Khagrachari District in Chittagong Hill Tracts on May 27, reports The Telegraph on May 29. The trio was identified as Gautam Tripura (24), Ramchandra Chakma (45), and Laxmimohan Chakma (28). Sources said during interrogation, the three, all Indian nationals, allegedly admitted that they were involved in a gun-running racket active in the border areas of Tripura and the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh.
