British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Hugo Swire on May 12 said in the UK parliament that the proscription of diaspora Tamil organizations that are suspected of having links to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) by the Sri Lankan Government is not conducive to a successful reconciliation process in the island nation, reports Colombo Page. He further said Sri Lankan Government should not use proscription to suppress freedom of speech, especially when Sri Lanka's human rights record is under international scrutiny. He also added that the UK has raised concerns with the Government regarding the arrests of Ms. Jeyakumari Balendran and others, in particular on the lack of clarity around the evidence against the suspects and the charges brought.

Sri Lankan defence sources revealed that one of the former prominent Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres, identified by the Indian Police as K. Thayapararaja, said to have been tortured and killed by the Sri Lankan Security Forces (SFs) in 2009 as claimed by many local and international NGOs, was among the arrested persons by the Tamil Nadu police in Dhanushkodi in India on May 5, when they entered India without valid documents, reports Daily Mirror on May 14. Defence sources also alleged that Thayapararaja and his wife Uthayakala had close links with some NGOs operating from London with links to LTTE. They had allegedly used this is a connection to promise lucrative jobs and operated the racket with pro-LTTE elements pretending to help Tamils. A senior police official also said that “There were several complaints about this husband and wife to the Criminal Investigations Department and several Police stations and we would work with the Indian Police to bring down both the suspects soon, as CID is currently conducting separate inquiries against these suspects.”

As Sri Lanka is getting ready to commemorate the defeat of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), the Ministry of Home Affairs, India on May 14 has extended its ban on the LTTE for five more years, reports Colombo Page. The Ministry said despite the ban in force, attempts have been made by pro-LTTE organizations and individuals to extend their support to the LTTE. It also fear that LTTE's objective for a separate homeland (Tamil Eelam) for all Tamils threatens the sovereignty and territorial integrity of India, and amounts to cession and secession of a part of the territory of India from the Union. Ministry noted that the remnant LTTE leaders or cadres have also initiated the efforts to regroup the scattered activists and resurrect the outfit locally and internationally. India initially banned the Tamil Tigers in 1992 under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) following the assassination of Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991 by an LTTE suicide bomber. The Central Government since then has been extending the ban every two years.

Hundreds of Sri Lankans marched on the Norwegian embassy in Colombo, Western Province on May 16 to protest against Oslo's support for remnants of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) living abroad, reports Colombo Page. Earlier, Norway acted as peace broker but failed to secure agreement from the parties to a peaceful end to the conflict. Sinhalese nationalists accuse it of supporting the LTTE, a charge Oslo has repeatedly rejected. The Sri Lankan Government at the end of April, 2014 sent out an alert over Interpol demanding that Norway's Government arrest Perinpanayagam Sivaparan, an Oslo-based Tamil, claiming that he is the new leader of the LTTE.

A statement issued by the National Peace Council (NPC) said that the Government has decided to celebrate its “Victory Day” in Matara District in the Southern Province on May 18 to commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of the Sri Lankan Security Forces (SFs) in the civil war, reports Sri Lanka Guardian on May 13. It further said that NPC is saddened by the continuing emphasis on the divisions that exist within Sri Lankan society instead of on factors that could genuinely unify the polity. On the other hand Government has prohibited any public commemoration of the end of the war in the Northern Province by expressing its opposition to the occasion being used by political parties and separatist groups in the North to glorify the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
