The display of a wreckage of a passenger airplane that was shot down by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) 16 years ago this weekend at the public park grounds in Jaffna District drew a large crowd, reports Colombo Page on January 12. The debris of the ill-fated aircraft along with some recovered personal items of the passengers including a National Identity Card of a passenger, clothes, and shoes, were on display to the public on January 11 and 12. The ill-fated Lion Air flight 602 from Palaly to Ratmalana carrying 48 civilians and 8 crew including two Ukrainian pilots went missing on September 29, 1998 over the Iranativu Island into the sea off the north-western coast. The wreckage was recovered last year by the Sri Lanka Navy divers on the information provided to the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) of Police by a LTTE cadre who fired the missile to shoot down the plane.

A Sri Lankan man sought by Interpol for terrorism has been arrested by the French Police in Paris when the man walked into the Police Station to lodge a complaint, reports Colombo Page on January 15. Tharmalingam Jeyanthan (35) belonged to the defeated Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) walked into a Police Station in eastern Paris to lodge a complaint on poor working conditions at his employment when he was identified by the French Police as a wanted person. The Police had quickly realized the man was the subject of an international arrest warrant for terrorism. Tharmalingam was notified of the warrant against him and released on bail when he was produced in a Paris court. A Red Notice issued by Interpol on Tharmalingam says he is wanted by the judicial authorities of Sri Lanka for prosecution and to serve a sentence.

Reacting to the possibility of being sent to a Government—run rehabilitation camp meant for LTTE detainees, a Tamil National Alliance (TNA) woman councillor of the Northern Provincial Council (NPC) said she would resist the move, reports The Hindu on January 15. Ananthi Saseetharan said that putting her under rehabilitation would require her arrest and any attempt to do so would have international repercussions for the Government. Saseetharan said she was never a member of the LTTE but wanted justice for her husband and several others who had disappeared during the three-decade ethnic conflict. Defence Ministry was seriously considering accommodating Saseetharan, the wife of a former senior LTTE member, at a rehabilitation facility to prevent her from propagating separatist sentiments.

Weeratunga, who chairs the task force monitoring the NAP, briefing the Permanent Representatives to the United Nations in Geneva described the state of the country at the end of the three-decade long war in May 2009 that defeated the terrorist group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the efforts that went into restoring normalcy to the lives of those affected due to the conflict. Sri Lanka made little progress in 2013 in accountability for serious human rights abuses committed during the country's three-decade long war against Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) that ended in 2009, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said on January 21 in its World Report 2014 released in New York, reports Colombo Page. "The Sri Lankan Government makes a lot of claims about pursuing accountability for wartime abuses, but the world is still waiting to see some results," Asia Director at HRW Brad Adams said. He said it is clearer than ever that an independent international investigation is needed to make genuine progress in providing justice for victims.

With the latest discovery, skeletal remains of 42 people have been unearthed so far from the site that lies along the access road to the Thirukethiswaram Kovil in Mannar District in the former war zone. The excavations began on December 20, 2013 after road construction workers laying water pipes along the road stumbled on the human skeletal remains and alerted the police. The second phase of the excavations commenced on January 16. The site was in the region that was under the control of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) until the Security Forces liberated Mannar District in 2008.

Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga in Washington (United States) said on January 27 that an international inquiry into war crimes in Sri Lanka would bring "chaos," and the Government's national reconciliation process must be given several more years to work, reports Daily Mirror. He said Sri Lanka needed at least five years from the July 2012 date the Government regards as the start of its reconciliation process for the effort to take root. The final few months of Sri Lanka's long civil war in 2009 were by far the bloodiest, and both the Government and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels blame each other for the deaths of tens of thousands of mainly Tamil civilians during that period.
