President Pervez Musharraf on February 6 denied US claims that Iraq used its Islamabad embassy as a liaison with the Al Qaeda network. He made these remarks while referring to US Secretary of State Colin Powell’s claim before the United Nations Security Council on February 5. "I haven’t heard entirely what he said. I have to analyse it. But if he said it, it is certainly not the truth," Musharraf told reporters in Moscow. "Certainly in Pakistan we think no such activity took place... We don’t have any information or intelligence on this. If he (Powell) has the intelligence or information, we need to analyse whatever information he has." the President said. Musharraf also added that anti-war sentiment was on the rise in Pakistan and a war in Iraq could unleash a wave of unrest in the country.

The Washington Times reported on February 10 that the Al Qaeda is training hundreds of Islamist radicals in Pakistan and Kashmir to send them to "sleeper cells" in the US. Quoting unnamed American and foreign officials, the report said that at least 400 radicals have been trained or are in training in special camps, and many have already been routed through Europe to Muslim communities in US. US intelligence officials were quoted as saying that the camps operate in remote regions of western Pakistan and in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) and are financed by various terrorist networks, including the Al Qaeda and sources in Saudi Arabia. Training camps in PoK were reportedly being operated by the Harkat-ul-Ansar (HuA) and Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT).

A Jirga (council) of hundreds of Utmanzai tribesmen in Miranshah has reportedly decided to raise a militia to hunt down foreign militants hiding in the region bordering Afghanistan. "They have vowed to catch al-Qaeda and the Taliban men in the area and hand them over to the government," a local official in North Waziristan, Sherzada Khan, told Reuters. A similar militia was set up in the neighbouring South Waziristan during January 2004. Khan also said that the North Waziristan council also decided to demolish the houses of those providing sanctuary to foreign militants and impose a fine of Rupees Five million on their tribe.

Three Al Qaeda suspects were arrested consequent to a shootout on February 13 in the Jamrud tribal area near the Afghan border, in which three persons were injured. The arrests come after security agencies captured an equal number of suspects, including two Arabs, on February 12. During the shootout, an Arab suspect was injured when he attempted to blow himself up with a grenade, said local official Riaz Khan. He added that the arrests were made at the house of a tribesman, identified as Mohammad Amin, who was also among those arrested.

Zalmay Khalizad, US Special Envoy to Afghanistan, has reportedly charged that the Taliban, Al Qaeda and Gulbaddin Hikmatyar’s supporters keep "coming across from Pakistan" into Afghanistan. The London-based Sunday Express has reported that the US and British security forces have cornered Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in a mountainous area in Baluchistan, near the Afghanistan border. Quoting "a US intelligence source," it said Osama and at least 50 of his associates were inside an area 16 kilometers deep "north of Khanozai town and Quetta." "He is boxed in," the unidentified source was quoted as saying, adding that US special forces were "absolutely confident" that he could not escape. Meanwhile, the Baluchistan Home Department on February 22 denied the report that any member of the Taliban or Al Qaeda was either cornered or arrested from any part of the province. "There is no truth in these reports," a senior official of the Home department told The News.

Pakistan on February 23 said that some Al Qaeda terrorists were still hiding in the Waziristan agencies. Interior Minister Makhdoom Faisal Saleh Hayat said in Islamabad that the tribal elders of South and North Waziristan had handed over some Al Qaeda suspects hiding there. He added, "But some of them are still hiding there and the Government of Pakistan would take every step to arrest them." Commenting on reports that an operation was launched in South and North Waziristan or in the border areas in Baluchistan, he said, "There is nothing new but the government has launched a full-fledge campaign to block the entry of terrorists from Afghanistan for one year." He, however, rejected reports suggesting that some 8,000 troops had been deployed in South Waziristan for a joint Pakistan-US operation.

Pakistani security agencies launched an operation on February 24 against suspected terrorists taking shelter in the tribal areas bordering Afghanistan. At least 20 Al Qaeda suspects, including some foreign nationals, are reported to have been arrested during these raids. Director General of Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) Maj. Gen Shaukat Sultan said that foreign nationals were among those captured in the Azam Warsak and Shkai areas. The News has reported that three foreign national women were arrested from Azam Warsak, some 12 kilometers west of Wana, headquarters of the South Waziristan Agency. Unnamed officials were quoted as saying that Saudi, Egyptian and Yemeni nationals were among those detained and others could be Uzbeks or Chechens. The Government had set February 20 as the deadline for tribal elders to hand over Al Qaeda operatives and thus far approximately 58 suspects have been turned over.

The Daily Times reported on February 25 that the Federal Government has ordered a crackdown on an unnamed group led by Maulvi Shahzada Khan in the Northern Areas for its alleged involvement in terrorist activity. Quoting official sources, the report said that intelligence agencies have warned the Government that the group could resort to terrorist activities at any place and at any time. They said that the group’s links with Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), Tehreek-e-Nafaz-e-Shariat-e-Mohammadi (TNSM) and other outlawed Jehadi organisations had been established and its links with Al Qaeda cannot be ruled out. Khan is alleged to be involved in several bomb blasts and firing at Social Action Programme school buildings, besides attacks on government officials.

According to The Nation, the United States has handed over to Pakistan a list of 53 Al Qaeda suspects believed to be hiding in the South Waziristan Agency bordering Afghanistan. "The Bush administration has extended a list to Pakistani authorities which contain the names of 53 al-Qaeda suspects who, it said, have taken refuge in South Waziristan Agency. This US contention is based on intelligence reports gathered from Afghanistan that these suspected terrorists have sneaked into the Pakistani side a couple of months ago," the report indicated.
