According to media reports, the Bihar-Jharkhand-Bengal Special Area Committee of left-wing extremist—Naxalite group––Maoist Communist Centre (MCC), while owning responsibility for December 20-Saranda forest ambush, threatened to carry out similar 'operations' in the future if security agencies did not stop torturing innocent farmers and labourers on the pretext of curbing extremism. In a release issued in Gaya, Bihar, on December 23, the MCC also called upon constables of central forces and Jharkhand police to ignore the directives or orders of their officers in conducting raids in the villages of the poor or face action from the outfit. The release claimed the December 13-ambush, in which 13 police personnel were killed, was carried out only to avenge the killing of one of its leaders, Ishwar, who was killed in an encounter on November 27, 2001.

Three Maoist insurgents of Nepal have been arrested at the Tensing Norgey bus terminus in Siliguri, West Bengal, on December 28. Police sources said the arrested Maoists had come from Nepal and were planning to go to Patna to attend a ‘high level’ meeting jointly organized by left-wing extremists—Naxalites—the People’s War Group (PWG) and Maoist Communist Centre (MCC). The arrested persons did not know the location of the meeting, as it was kept secret. Additional Superintendent of Police Rajeev Misra said the arrested Maoists, during interrogation, revealed that they had direct links with the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), and their relations with the Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) could not be ruled out. A police team from Nepal was expected to reach Siliguri shortly to interrogate them, he added.
