While three Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) militants were killed by Border Security Force (BSF) at Humhama camp near the Srinagar Airport on October 3, Police said the dead infiltrators were part of a group of seasoned and trained jihadis who had crossed over sometime in August, and they are bracing for more attacks, reports The Times of India. A senior intelligence officer said around 16 armed JeM terrorists had infiltrated into the Indian side. While some spread out into Anantnag, Kulgam, Pulwama and Shopian districts of south Kashmir, three to four terrorists are believed to be in Srinagar alone. Inspector General (IG)-Kashmir range, Munir Ahmad Khan said the group of three terrorists, who carried out the Humhama Fidayeen attack, were from the same group that struck District Police Line (DPL) Pulwama on August 26, in which eight security personnel and three militants were killed. "Four terrorists were killed in Uri on September 25. Six to seven of them are still at large and could carry another attack," IG Khan said, adding that Security Forces (SFs) are on high alert. Sources said the terrorists had infiltrated from two places and four more jihadis are on their radar.According to intelligence reports, October 3's attack was carried out by 'Afzal Guru Squad', which had started out of Pulwama district and sought shelter in residential buildings in Srinagar before attacking the BSF camp. Sources said the terrorists' initial target was the Srinagar airport but they changed their plan because of the strong security arrangement there. Plus, porous fencing on the BSF camp's rear side made it a relatively easy target. IG Khan, however, denied reports of damaged fencing and said the terrorists carried out the attack by cutting the barbed fence around the camp.According to a senior Police officer, there are nearly 70 terrorists, mostly Pakistanis, operating in north Kashmir's Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara Districts. On September 28, four Pakistani Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorists had barged into the home of BSF officer Mohammad Ramzan Parray at Bandipora's Hajin area and killed him, while injuring three of his family members. Police suspect these four terrorists might have sneaked into Srinagar city. "We suspect the terrorists may have come to Srinagar from north Kashmir. We're trying to track them down," said an intelligence officer.

Two persons arrested for allegedly providing logistical and material support to terrorists infiltrating from Pakistan into Jammu and Kashmir for carrying out subversive activities were on October 6 sent to judicial custody by a Delhi court for a month, reports The Indian Express. District Judge Poonam A Bamba sent Zahoor Ahmed Peer and Nazir Ahmed Peer to jail after they were produced in the court by the National Investigating Agency (NIA) which submitted that they were not required for further custodial interrogation. Both the accused, residents of Wahama in Kupwara District, were arrested on September 19 by the NIA from Jammu in connection with a case registered in July 2016.Police in Jammu and Kashmir had arrested a Pakistani national, Bahadur Ali, from Handwara in Kupwara District in July 2016 and allegedly seized a large quantity of incriminating material, including arms and ammunition, from him. The case was later handed over to the NIA. The two accused allegedly provided material and logistical support to Ali and his associates soon after their infiltration into Indian territory, the NIA said. Both the accused were local supporters of Ali and had visited Pakistan thrice and met terrorists from Hizb-ul-Mujahideen(HM)and Lashkar-e-Toiba(LeT)and were still in their contact, it was alleged.

Security Forces (SFs) busted a militant module with the arrest of three militants - two from the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and one from the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) - from Kulgam area of Kulgam District, reports Daily Excelsior on October 16. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Muneer Khan said that “On October 14, two terrorists with the intention to snatch weapons of personal security guards of a protected person fired few rounds at Kund in Qazigund area. But they had to beat a retreat due to hue and cry raised by locals.” He said on receipt of this information, a joint party of the Police, Army and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) established a check point and nabbed the two militants, who were riding on a motor cycle. “They were identified as Khursheed Ahmad Dar and Haziq Rather. One pistol, some ammunition and a live grenade were recovered from their possession. They belong to LeT,” he added. Khan said an Over Ground Worker (OGW) of militants, Rameez Yatoo, who works in a medical agency in Kulgam, was arrested. “Arms and ammunition were recovered from his home. He had helped the militants in carrying out the attack on the Police vehicle at Damhal Hanjipura on Saturday (October 14) in which one cop had lost his life,” the IGP said adding the attack was carried out by militants of HM.The IGP added that the number of militants in Kashmir has come down due to continued successful operations. “As far as the number is concerned, again the number of militants has certainly decreased after continuous successful operations. The militants who are in field we will face them and what is the strategy for them we will formulate that but our main concern is recruitment. We want that there should be no further recruitment. And I have been telling you this thing that previously also and I reiterated today that we target the leadership of militants and one of the reasons for that is these leaders are more involved in recruitments for their cadres and that is our concern”, he said. Khan said the offer of surrender to local militants still holds good and there has been excellent response to their offer. “There has been excellent and tremendous response to our appeal which we made last time. As far as coming and surrendering before us is concerned, it is not important and necessary and mandatory that we disclose every surrender. We have to keep certain things up our sleeves and disclose the things at appropriate time because we have to see and care for security of surrender (militant) as well”, he said.

An alleged Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) operative, out on bail after serving a sentence for possession of firearms and explosives, was arrested by Police for possessing fake documents, including a passport from Barablan locality of Moradabad District on October 26 night, reports The Times of India. Farhan Ahmed Ali (48) had used the passport to travel to Kuwait in 2011, which was also a violation of the conditional bail on which he had been released from prison. Following a complaint of land grab, Police arrested Ali from Barablan locality of Mughalpura Police Station. A search of his house turned up fake IDs including ration card, driver's licence, Pan card and Aadhaar card, as well as a fake passport. On August 28, 2002, Ali and another alleged LeT man, Shahid Ahmed Bakshi, were arrested from New Delhi with 4kg of RDX, detonators, pistol and ammunition.
