According to The Hindu, the Karnataka Government has written to the Centre to impose a ban on the mass/frontal organisations of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) to check the activities of left-wing extremists (also referred to as Naxalites) in the State. Sources in the Home Department told the newspaper that the State Government had urged the Centre to ban the Maoist mass organisations as they were giving cover to the "secret activities" of the CPI-Maoist, propagating its ideology, providing legitimate forums for propaganda, recruiting cadres for the parent organisation and bringing together revolutionary writers and artists on a common platform. The Centre is likely to take a decision after obtaining the views of other States where the Naxalites are active. Some of the mass organisations of the CPI-Maoist that are said to be active in Karnataka are: Karnataka Vimochana Ranga, Mahila Jagruthi, Karnataka Rythu Cooliee Sangam, Progressive Democratic Front, Karnataka People's Resistance Forum, Samrajyashahi Virodhi Okkoota, Progressive Youth Centre, Bababudangiri Solidarity Forum and Adivasi Solidarity Group.
