Indian Mujahideen (IM) operative Mirza Himayat Inayat Baig, the lone arrested accused in the German Bakery blast (February 13, 2010) that killed 17 and injured 64 people, was convicted by a sessions court in Pune (Maharashtra) on April 15, for criminal conspiracy, murder and other charges, reports The Times of India. Additional Sessions Judge Neeraj Dhote fixed April 18 for pronouncing the punishment, after hearing the prosecution and defence on the point of sentence.Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) said that German Bakery blast was the first act of terror in which the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) coordinated with IM. "We proved in court that the LeT and IM joined hands for the first time to create terror in India," said ATS chief Rakesh Maria. LeT operatives gave Baig INR 1.25 milion for the Pune operations. He added, "Baig was the connecting link between the LeT and IM. He did not plant the bomb but took active part in the conspiracy, assembling the explosives and transporting them to the spot. IM founder member, Ahmed Zarar alias Yasin Bhatkal, planted the bomb."However, Iqbal Bhatkal, Riyaz Bhatkal, Yasin Bhatkal, Mohsin Choudhary and Fayyaz Kagzi, all prime accused in the German Bakery blast case, have evaded arrest till date.

Union Ministry of Home Affairs (UMHA) called the blast “a terrorist attack”, Hindustan Times reports on April 18. According to initial investigation reports of the blast, the bomb had been hidden near the petrol tank of a motorcycle for maximum damage. Times of India further reports that, the bike bomb that went off was a cocktail of sorts. A pipe bomb is believed to have been placed in the bike. UMHA pointed to an Indian Mujahideen (IM) signature in targeting crowds gathered at the BJP office for ticket distribution ahead of May 5th Karnataka election. Stating that the IM module behind the Hyderabad blasts of February 21, 2013 had been identified, an UMHA official did not rule out the involvement of missing members of the same module in the planning and execution of the Bangalore blast.

Goa’s beaches were targets of suspected Lashkar-e-Toiba militant Nasir Raizuddin, being tried for the Bangalore (Karnataka) serial blasts of July 25, 2008; Wikileaks has claimed citing a recently declassified US diplomatic cable, Firstpost reports on April 19. The cable, dated February 2008, was drafted by David T. Hopper, then consul general at the US consulate in Chennai (Tamil Nadu). Hopper quotes top Police officials about other areas identified by Riazuddin before his arrest in Karnataka. According to Hopper, Raziuddin told the Police that along with accomplices from the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), he had identified sites across the country for a series of bomb blasts. And “beaches in Goa frequented by foreigners” were one of those specifically identified as targets, according to the diplomatic communique.Among other targets on Raziuddin’s list were the Andhra Pradesh Police Headquarters, and Infosys campuses in Bangalore and Mangalore (Karnataka), says the confidential cable numbered 08CHENNAI55. Then Karnataka additional director general of Police Shankar Bidari, superintendent of Police of Davangare District in Karnataka Ravendra Prasad, and state Home Secretary Vatsala Watsa have been quoted in the cable. The cable also says that Indian police believed that Nasir Raizuddin had links to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

Preliminary forensic reports suggest that the bomb used in the Bangalore (Karnataka) blast of April 17, 2013 is similar to the ones used near Jama Masjid in New Delhi on September 19, 2010, Zaveri Bazar, Mumbai (Maharashtra) on July 13, 2011 and also in the twin blasts in Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh) on February 21, 2013, The Times of India reports on April 20.Initial findings indicated that a metal container was used to assemble an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) for the Bangalore blast. It carried 800 to 900 grams of nitrate-based explosive material. It was more like an incendiary device to cause fire - similar to the one that was used for a mild blast in a Maruti car outside Jama Masjid in 2010. Though there was no shrapnel in it, the device appeared similar to what Indian Mujahideen (IM) had used in carrying out blasts at Zaveri Bazar in Mumbai. Incidentally, a motorbike was used to strap the bomb in the Zaveri Bazar incident also."Although the explosives used to make IED for Bangalore blast look more like ammonium nitrate, we are waiting for the final report," said an official, adding the 'make' of the bomb had a clear IM signature where the terror outfit generally uses locally available material to assemble nitrate-based bombs with the help of any metal container or pressure cooker to make the device more compact.

Terror groups like Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) are increasingly turning tech-savvy, The Times of India reports on April 22. Sources claim that this trend started post November 26, 2008 (26/11) Mumbai (Maharashtra) attack and picked up rapidly. The LeT handlers, based either in Saudi Arabia or Pakistan, reportedly use internet-based communication, either voice or text, for recruitment since it is possible to maintain anonymity and use codes to communicate. This was earlier corroborated by the 26/11 accused and alleged LeT operative Syed Zabiuddin Ansari alias Abu Jundal. Both Abu Jundal and Fayyaz Kagzi had carried out recruitment through the internet until the former was deported from Saudi Arabia. Kagzi continues to do so and it is learnt that some members from Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh) were lured in the same way. Alleged Indian Mujahideen (IM) suspects Imran Khan, Irfan Mustafa, Obaid-ur-Rehman and others have heavily used internet.

Terrorist organisations like Indian Mujahideen (IM) have agents in Kerala to source two-wheelers which are used to plant bombs and trigger blasts in various parts of India, The Times of India reports on April 26. Whether it is scooter or bike, according to state intelligence officials, large number of two-wheelers are stolen or sourced by the agents of terrorist organisations from various parts of Kerala and smuggled out to Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. As per the latest data of Police, 409 two-wheelers were reported missing from Kerala in 2012 while it was 559 motorcycles in 2011. The agents make use of the bike lifting rackets in Kerala after offering them huge money. Intelligence officials said that the terrorists purposefully use the bikes sourced from Kerala to mislead the investigation team after each bomb blast. "We will be tracking the activities of regular bike lifters in the state. Though the terrorists largely depend on their trustworthy agents to source bikes, there is a possibility of terrorists themselves lifting bikes to avoid any possible detection through the agents," the officials said."We are tracking the agents who have been in touch with Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) activists identified as Abu Faizal, Mohammed Abrar Babu Khan and Akhil Khilji who have been to Kochi many a times," the officials said.
