An intelligence assessment being released on December 5 by the United States (US) Director of National Intelligence (DNI) estimates that through 2025, the Taliban regime will not prevent a humanitarian catastrophe without international aid, reiterating that the Taliban use harsh tactics to maintain control of the population, reports Hasht-E Subh on January 11. The report further predicted Taliban prioritizes reinforcement of theocratic rule over building a modern state, and the group will roll back much of the last two decades’ social and civic liberalizations. The findings of the DNI also stated that the Islamic State in Khurasan Province (ISKP) will pose the most challenging threat to the Taliban, regional nations and the west while Al-Qaeda elements will need more time to regroup before the they will be capable of posing threats to the west and regional countries.

Martinon, in a statement on Twitter said that since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan he has repeatedly warned that the Talibanization of the country was underway. Senior Taliban leaders were present at public execution in Farah Football Stadium. Referring to the December 7, 2022, execution, in Farah Province, a Taliban spokesman, Bilal Karimi, on December 8 said that the execution, which happened in the Farah, was carried out after many investigations and assessments, reports Tolo News. “The execution yesterday took place after many investigations, which were aligned with Islamic (law). All sides should not have any concern in this regard and should respect it,” said Bilal Karimi, deputy spokesman for the Taliban. Tolo News reports on December 8 that following widespread reactions “The supreme leader spoke and said we have struggled this much and fought for 20 years with the pagans to ensure an Islamic system and that now that God has given it to us, (God) means for us to ensure his divine commands,” said Mohammad Ismail Rahmani, a senior member of the Taliban.

On December 27, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR) Volker Turk asked Taliban regime to revoke immediately a raft of policies that target the rights of women and girls, reports Hasht-e Subh. He stated, “The ban will significantly impair, if not destroy, the capacity of these NGOs to deliver the essential services on which so many vulnerable Afghans depend. It is all the more distressing with Afghanistan in the grip of winter, when we know humanitarian needs are at their greatest and the work these NGOs do is all the more critical.” He added, “Women and girls cannot be denied their inherent rights. Attempts by the de facto authorities to relegate them to silence and invisibility will not succeed – it will merely harm all Afghans, compound their suffering, and impede the country’s development. Such policies cannot be justified in any way.”
