The troops operating in the Mannar front on June 24 captured several key locations in the North and North East of Adampan securing Mavilakkandi, Minnanirachchan and Marattikannaddi areas, Military sources told Daily News. At least 10 Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) militants were killed in the confrontation that erupted from early hours of the day. Troops captured Mavilakkandi, 2.4-kilometres North of Adampan on the Mannar-Pooneryn road and 700 -metres long heavily fortified LTTE defence line in the West of Mavilakkandi. The troops had captured nearly one kilometre stretch of this defence line in the North of Adampan few weeks back. Troops also captured 500-metre to 600-metre area in the Minnanirachchan region, three kilometres North East of Adampan. They also took control of Marattikannaddi in the North West of Andankulam which was used by the outfit to reinforce cadres into the Mannar front when fighting is going on. A school building complex and a church also came under the security forces (SFs) control. "The fall of Marattikannaddi is a severe blow to the LTTE as all their operations in the Mannar 'Rice Bowl' area get affected due to this situation," an unnamed senior military official added. Five soldiers also sustained injuries during these confrontations.

25 more LTTE militants were killed and two soldiers sustained injuries as the SFs engaged in operation ‘Rice Bowl’ on the Mannar Front fully captured the Andankulam area and 13 square kilometres surrounding it on June 27, an unnamed senior military official told Daily News. According to sources, the LTTE has lost almost all the bases they had within the Mannar ‘Rice Bowl’ area with the fall of Andankulam, the strongest LTTE position in the ‘Rice Bowl’ area, the official added. "Tiger cadres operating there ran out of the area taking all belongings as troops took the area in a surprise move yesterday," he added further. With the capture of Andankulam, troops are in the process of completing the task of liberating the entire Mannar ‘Rice Bowl’ area which is the most fertile land in the Mannar district, neglected without cultivations due to LTTE occupation. The SFs believe that Andankulam was the strongest Tiger base in the area as the LTTE had its main operation rooms in Andankulam.
