According to Deputy Inspector General of Police N.K. Illangakoon, the hotel’s second level collapsed and adjacent buildings were badly damaged due to the explosion. The blast occurred at around 5.40pm on the eve of the commencement of voting for the Eastern Provincial Council Elections on May 10 (today). Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said "This attack aimed at innocent civilians was a heinous act to derail the Eastern Provincial Council Election which will pave the way for the restoration of democracy in the Province." The hotel was reportedly frequented by senior politicians involved in electioneering from the morning.

Elections officials said according to reports received at the close of the poll, the estimated voter turnout was approximately 65% in Ampara, 55% in Batticaloa and 60% in Trincomalee. The historically significant polls conducted in the liberated Eastern region after 20 years was electing 37 members to the provincial council. Nearly a million people were eligible to vote. Numerous incidences of rigging, impeding polling agents or political party representatives at the polling booths and impersonations have been reported. Several attacks on vehicles and persons were also reported in the polling area. Two vehicles belong to the staff of Minister Rishard Badurdeen were smashed in Trincomalee, reports said.

The United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) won the first ever Provincial Council Election in the East, securing 20 (18+02 bonus seats) out of 37 seats on offer, while polling 52.21 per cent of the total votes, Daily News reported. The United National Party (UNP) which obtained 42.38 per cent of the total valid votes got 15 seats while the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and the Tamil Democratic National Alliance secured one seat each. The UPFA won two out of the three districts, - Batticaloa and Ampara while the Trincomalee district was won by the UNP. A total number of 591,676 (65.78 per cent) voters exercised their franchise out of a total of 982,721. However, the number of rejected votes was quite high with 54,780 (8.47 per cent) getting annulled. Out of 10 polling divisions in the East, the UPFA won in seven (Batticaloa, Kalkudah, Pandirippu, Ampara, Sammanthurai, Pothuvil and Seruwila while the UNP won three (Muttur, Trincomalee and Kalmunai). In the Batticaloa district, the UPFA secured six of the 11 seats available, with a lead of 46,739 votes over its closest rival the UNP (58,602), which got four seats while the TDNA won one seat polling 7,714 votes. In Batticaloa, all three polling divisions were won by the UPFA, namely Batticaloa, Kalkudah and Pandirippu, where the total voter turnout was 61.17 per cent. The UNP (70,858) defeated the UPFA (59,298) in the Trincomalee district where it won five seats against the four won by the latter. The JVP which polled 4,266 secured one seat. In Ampara, the UPFA won with a majority of 22,975 votes securing eight seats while the UNP got six. The UPFA also won three out of the four polling divisions with the UNP winning in Kalmunai.

A piece of torso of a person and diving equipment were found floating near the drowned Naval ship, A 520 (MV Invincible), in Trincomalee, suggesting the handiwork of a suicide bomber in destruction of the vessel on May 10-morning, an official said on May 12, according to Daily News. Navy divers have recovered body parts of the suspected LTTE suicide cadre from the waters where the outfit sank a navy cargo ship in the Trincomalee harbour, Navy spokesman D K P Dassanayake said. "Our divers found parts of lower portion of the body of the suspected suicide cadre body along with diving equipment from the sea," he said, adding the identity of the suicide bomber has not been established. The Navy believes the suicide cadre had used a suicide jacket for the blast as only the lower part of the body was recovered.

Tamileela Makkal Viduthalai Puligal (TMVP) leader and Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan on May 26 admitted that members of his organisation were responsible for the recent abductions at Eravur in Batticaloa. Admitting that the abductors were TMVP members, he said they had been handed over to Police, but insisted the accused men were not directly involved in the incident. The abductions of the Muslim youth on May 22, who are yet to be returned, led to widespread communal tension in Eravur, compelling the Government to impose a curfew. Two others were abducted a few days later, but released the next day. Meanwhile, a woman was killed in security forces (SFs) firing on May 26 as the SFs tried to disperse crowds in Eravur who took to the streets to protest the abduction.
