The Foreign Ministry also said it would on all likelihood "establish an internal Inter Ministerial Committee to liase with the UN Security Council Committee", that has been constituted. The Security Council resolution has asked member states, among other things, to ‘prevent and suppress financing of terrorism, freeze funds owned or controlled directly or indirectly by terrorist groups and deny both passive and active support to terrorists by eliminating the supply of weapons.

In the confrontation that started on October 5, 2001, two large LTTE boats were completely destroyed and two more vessels damaged to varying degrees. Besides, two Dovra class vessels of the Navy were damaged and three personnel sustained injuries. The LTTE has, however, refuted the claims of government troops. The rebels’ clandestine Voice of Tigers Radio said, "The Sea Tigers did not sustain any casualties".

Nine Members of Parliament (MP) belonging to the People’s Alliance (PA), five of who were members of the President’s Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), defected to the Opposition United National Party (UNP) reducing the PA government to a minority. The defections were effected a day ahead of putting to vote the no-confidence motion tabled in Parliament by the UNP. The People’s Alliance-Parliamentary group met on October 10 and unanimously decided to dissolve Parliament and call for fresh elections, reports said. The elections are likely to be held on December 5 and the new House would be convened on January 1, 2002. Nominations for the polls will be accepted between October 20 and 27. Meanwhile, Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) leader Arumugam Thondaman resigned from the Cabinet. Besides, three CWC MPs, too, resigned from their positions in the government.

Personnel were still fighting the fire following twin explosions caused during the attack. Three naval personnel were killed in the attack and their dead bodies recovered while nine others have been rescued and rushed to a hospital. Of the 16 naval personnel on board the tanker, 12 have been rescued, reports said. Besides all 12 crew were reported to be safe.
