Police foiled a terrorist attack on Shia “Imam Bargahs” during Muharram by arresting four suspected Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants and recovered suicide jackets, hand grenades, pistols and other weapons from their possession. The accused revealed that they were planning to sabotage the law and order situation during Muharram, added Daily Times. Police officials said these TTP operatives had affiliation with Al-Bader Group and smuggled weapons into Karachi via Chaman border of Qilla Abdullah District in Balochistan.

It said in its verdict: “If any hurdle is created in the party activities, they can get help of relevant authorities.” The two-member bench, comprising Chief Justice (CJ) Mushir Alam and Justice Ahmad, was hearing a constitutional petition filed by MQM-H Information Secretary Aleem Khan and Human Rights Activist Syed Iqbal Kazmi. Two persons were killed in acts of sectarian violence in Karachi in Sindh on December 3, Daily Times reported. In one incident an activist of the Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ), formerly known as SSP, was shot dead near Dawood Chowrangi within the precincts of Quaidabad police station. The deceased, identified as Mohammad Fayyaz, was going home on a bus when unidentified armed men on a motorcycle opened fire on him through bus window, killing him on the spot. Separately, another man was shot dead near his house at Chanesar Goth within the limits of Tipu Sultan police station. The deceased was identified as Shahid Raza.

Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) and Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) in a joint raid killed three cadres of the Punjab chapter of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on December 5 during an encounter in Allahwala Town of Korangi in Karachi, which ensued in a bid to recover an abducted industrialist Ahmed Chinoy, reports Daily Times. Two Policemen Raees Baloch and Abdul Sattar were also wounded in the skirmish. Chinoy was abducted from Landhi Industrial Zone of Quaidabad on October 8. Officials said that the abductors had initially demanded PKR 70 million for his release but later decided to settle for PKR 20 million after negotiations. Officials also claimed to have recovered 20 kilogrammes of explosive besides a huge cache of weapons, including four hand grenades and three TT pistols from the hideout.

Pakistan Army on December 5 engaged its 245 operational companies including regular troops and paramilitary wings to maintain law and order during Ashura and the remaining days of the Islamic month of Muharram in security volatile districts and tribal region across Pakistan, The Nation. The operational companies include 122 from the regular Army while those of 123 from the Frontier Corps, Frontier Constabulary and Rangers, Army’s three paramilitary offshoots. As many as 38 Districts have been marked as security sensitive in various parts of the country where the military has deployed troops at brigades and platoons level on the directives of the Government of Pakistan. These Districts include those of 21 in Punjab, six in Gilgit-Baltistan, five each in Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and one in Balochistan.

The two suspects , identified as Abdul Wahid alias Lala alias Guddu and Mohammed Shakeel, disclosed that they had buried more arms and explosives in Haji Mureed Goth of Khamosh Colony. A raid was conducted there which led to the recovery of 20 kilograms of explosives, three kilograms of ball bearings, a five-meter-long detonating cord, three detonators, one hand grenade, a Kalashnikov, an MP-5 gun and hundreds of bullets. In connection with the December 24, 2011 abduction of a colleague, identified as Mohan Lal Meghwadh, from Mirpukhas District, the lawyers in several Districts of Sindh boycotted the courts on December 26 and said that they would continue to do so if law enforcers do not rescue him soon, reports Express Tribune. To protest against the abduction, the Bar Associations of Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Umerkot and Tharparker announced that they would boycott their duties for an entire week. Their colleagues in Hyderabad also refused to perform their duties. “We are not only upset by the fact that Meghwadh has been abducted, but are also angry because the Police is refusing to cooperate with us in this matter,” said Advocate Salahuddin Panhwar, who is the President of the Mirpurkhas District Bar Association as well as a member of the Pakistan Bar Council.

He was associated with Tehreek Ghalba-e-Islam and Ittehad Bain-ul Muslimeen. Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat’s (ASWJs) spokesman Maulana Taj Hanfi said that the deceased was his party’s sympathizer. Some sources said that victim was also associated with Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM). However Police officials denied the reports saying that they had no information about his affiliation with any outlawed organisation.

The markets in the area have been closed and Khairpur is reportedly deserted, save for the Police and Rangers patrolling the streets. Other reports claimed that there was a virtual curfew-like situation as no one was allowed on the streets. People are afraid of the clash escalating further because the tussle is between two religious groups,” said a citizen, Irfan Phulpoto. He said that the tense areas were Nao Goth, the stronghold of one group and Panj Gula, the stronghold of another sect. Some 600 Policemen and 200 Rangers officers were reportedly deputed to patrol.

Crime Investigation Department (CID) of the Sindh Police claimed to have arrested five Punjab Chapter Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants (also known as Punjabi Taliban) from the National Highway near a thermal factory in Shah Latif Town in Karachi on December 31, reported Express Tribune. The suspects were identified as Alauddin alias Shakirullah, Farhan Khan alias Ali, Amir Shahzad alias Mufti Asadullah, Irfan alias Mavia and Shah Jahan alias Adnan Munna. Alauddin is the chief of the Punjabi Taliban group in Sindh. The group is led by Ustad Aslam. The Police also seized two suicide jackets, 145 kilogrammes of explosives, six detonators, 23 rockets grenades, three Kalashnikovs, a 9mm pistol, 10 kilogrammes of fertiliser and detonating wires from them.
