According to Daily Times, the army destroyed a petrol and ammunitions depot used by militants in the Swat district of NWFP with heavy artillery fire from helicopter gun-ships. Fuel supply to the militants has been suspended after the destruction of a key petrol station in the Kooz Shor area of Matta sub-division, said Amjad Iqbal, a military spokesman at the Swat Media Centre. Security forces seized sophisticated weapons and explosives from a house in the Nangolai area of Kabal sub-division, said Iqbal. Troops have taken control of the area between Kanjoo and Baryam Chowk of Swat, he added. He informed that troops had set up check posts at Pir Kalay and Barymam Chowk - areas previously controlled by the militants.

Security forces killed over 230 militants and arrested 90, including some foreign nationals, since the start of military operations in the Swat district of the NWFP, according to interior ministry spokesman Brig (retd) Javed Iqbal Cheema, Dawn reported. In his weekly press briefing on law and order on December 4, he said the operation in Swat was continuing and expressed the hope that elections in Swat would be held on January 8, along with other parts of the country. He claimed that "The situation has considerably improved and most of the areas have been cleared of the militants, enabling local residents to resume their normal activities." Cheema said the civil administration was functioning normally in the Swat and Shangla districts and police had set up pickets. The writ of the government, he added, would be also established in other areas.

Earlier, troops backed by tanks and gunship helicopters advanced towards Imam Dheri and seized control of a seminary run by Fazlullah, and an adjacent mosque without any resistance. De-mining experts have reportedly started combing the area for landmines and booby traps. In Khwazkhela, the troops have taken control of a police station from the militants and handed it over to the local police. An unspecified number of militants fled the towns before they were overrun. About 400 troops and police moved in, and found the complex abandoned, AP reported. The troops also dismantled a prison set up by militants inside a girls’ primary school in the Matta sub-division and freed dozens of people, an intelligence official told AFP. There were reports that Fazlullah’s deputy, Maulana Shah Dauran, had been killed in a gun-battle late on December 5, military spokesman Amjad Iqbal said. "The forces will chase militants out of the area," the in-charge of the Swat operation, Maj-Gen Naseer Janjua, said told journalists in the village, according to Dawn. He claimed that most parts of the Swat Valley had been cleared of militants and some remaining pockets would soon be eliminated.

The army also blew up the houses of Fazlullah and his spokesman Maulana Sirajuddin, besides seizing several weapons, computers and some bottles of liquor from the site, army officials said. The liquor was believed to be seized at militants’ check-posts from people. A militant, however, denied that the liquor belonged to them and termed it ‘a drama’, according to Dawn. "They are in control of that area and they can stage any drama they want. It has nothing to do with us," said Afsar Khan.

The Pakistan Army claimed on December 8 that it has cleared almost all militants from Swat after killing 290 rebels and arresting another 143 in recent weeks. According to AFP, Major General Nasser Janjua said 20,000 troops backed by helicopter gun ships and artillery had driven the militants out of their strongholds in an ongoing military operation. “Fazlullah is still on the run with hardcore militants estimated to be between 200 to 400, including some foreigners,” Janjua told reporters in Mingora, and added, “The militants have retreated to two places in the mountains in the northwest of the valley and we will chase them there.” However, Janjua was careful not to claim success, saying the militants remain dangerous and likely will try to regroup for at least one major counter-attack, adds Associated Press. He said officials believe that some of the fighters loyal to Fazlullah have melted into the local populace, while the hardcore supporters have been pushed into the Piochar side valley. He also said Fazlullah had been involved with the “enemy”, and claimed al Qaeda had played a role in the unrest in the conservative region. He informed that said five soldiers and six civilians had been killed in the operation and around 20 civilians had also been wounded. He opined that it would take up to four months to stabilise the region, adding that it would take at least 12 months to reopen the region to tourists.

Intelligence agencies have warned against a spate of suicide attacks by terrorists based in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Swat, targeting VVIPs, including President Pervez Musharraf, former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, the US and Indian embassies and sensitive national and military installations, sources told Daily Times on December 13. “The high value targets include the top government hierarchy, top politicians including former religious affairs minister Ejazul Haq, and the Attock Oil Refinery in Rawalpindi. Besides the US and Indian embassies, their consulates and several other religious and political personalities are also on the hit list,” said a confidential National Crisis Management Cell report. The report titled, “Threat to VVIPs, Politicians, Foreign Missions and Military Installations,” was forwarded on December 12 to all home secretaries and police chiefs of the four provinces, the federal capital, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and the Northern Areas. The report reveals that militants from the FATA and Swat are planning to carry out suicide attacks in collusion with al Qaeda. Sources said the terrorists could be guised as women, or be in military or police uniforms. “Furthermore, five suicide bombers have already entered the NWFP to move to their target areas,” the report suggested. “The emphasis needs to be on the security of foreign diplomats, foreigners living in Pakistan, and the Christian community who would attend Christmas prayers at different churches in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. It is apprehended that hardcore religious elements may try to disrupt the New Year celebrations,” the report stated.
