According to Pakistani media reports, the Federal government has filed sedition charges against Qazi Hussain Ahmed, Chief of Jamaat-e-Islam (JeI), for allegedly stirring revolt against the government extending support for the US war on Afghanistan. Earlier on November 5, the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) government issued an order placing Qazi under house arrest for a month. He is the second leader of a religious party to be placed under house arrest. Earlier, the government had ordered Jamaat-Ulema-e-Islam (Fazlur faction) leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman under house arrest. Meanwhile, commenting on the government’s move the JeI Chief said, "I consider this government as unconstitutional and illegal. Let them do whatever they like. They file such cases against us wherever we go to hold rallies."

The central chief of Al Badr, Bukht Zameen, has, on November 10, asked the Pakistan government to sever relations with the US. Addressing a press briefing at Peshawar in which two terrorists of the outfit who had escaped from Indian prisons were also present, the Al Badr chief criticised the role of Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC), saying that instead of helping the innocent people of Afghanistan it was siding with the anti-Islamic forces. He claimed that the ‘Kashmiri freedom movement’ was in its final stages and soon they would hear good news. He also alleged that the Indian prime minister was expecting that the Americans would help them in the same manner as they were doing Afghanistan.

Media reports said security forces in Baluchistan and the North West Frontier Province (NWFP are on a high alert to track down as many as 96 ‘most wanted’ sectarian terrorists, who were reportedly hiding inside Afghanistan since 1996, but are now widely expected to cross the border into Pakistan. Law-enforcement agencies patrolling the Pakistan-Afghan border have also been directed to ensure the arrest of these terrorists in case they enter Pakistan in the disguise of Afghan refugees. These terrorists are wanted in several sectarian killings in Pakistan since the mid-1980s. Consequent to the establishment of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, they had reportedly taken refuge in the ranks of the Taliban militia and commenced their operations against religious groups from Afghan soil. The Taliban authorities had refused to hand over these terrorists on the grounds that they had not been able to ascertain their whereabouts.

President’s spokesperson Maj. Gen. Rashid Qureshi said, "Yes, I think the orders are being issued today." Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar said in Islamabad, on the same day, that Pakistan was no longer doing business with the Taliban regime, although it had not withdrawn diplomatic recognition. Media reports have indicated that Pakistani law enforcement officials have received information that many of Pakistan's most wanted terrorists have either been killed or trapped in Kunduz, Afghanistan. Reports quoting senior intelligence officials in North West Frontier Province (NWFP) have pointed out that interrogation with one of the wanted terrorists, who was arrested while returning to Pakistan near the Torkham border recently, has revealed that at least two dozen terrorists associated with the proscribed Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) have either been killed in Mazar-e-Sharif or were trapped in Kunduz till last week. Officials’ also suspect that Pakistan’s most wanted terrorist Riaz Basra, the LeJ Chief is also one of the terrorists currently trapped in Afghanistan. As reported earlier, the Government of Pakistan had proscribed LeJ and Sipah-e-Mohammed Pakistan (SMP), on August 14 this year. Pakistani intelligence agencies have also reportedly estimated that approximately 8000 Pakistani Jehadis, mostly from the tribal areas of the NWFP, are currently facing death either in the prison camps of Northern Alliance or in Kandahar. Official sources also added that no significant case of sectarian terrorism was reported anywhere in Pakistan in the last two months since the US attack on Afghanistan commenced.
