However, terrorist centres and their mentors are present in Punjab,” the KP information minister said. Hussain urged the Punjab Government to be more focused on terrorism, as terrorists were now trying to trigger sectarian violence by starting activities in the name of Barelvi and Deobandi sects. “The KP Government has time and again informed the Punjab Government regarding the danger of terrorism,” he added.

The United States (US) Consul General in Peshawar Candace Putnam said on July 6 that the United States desired to see Pakistan take action against the Haqqani network, which is killing American soldiers in Afghanistan, reports Daily Times. “We very much would like to see action in North Waziristan Agency. The Haqqani network is killing our soldiers,” Putnam told a news conference before leaving her post. Elizabeth Rood will now replace her at the US Consulate General in Peshawar. However, the outgoing consul general said it was up to Pakistan to decide when they would need to take action. She stressed that extremists “have found safe havens” in North Waziristan Agency. “There is no question that extremists have found safe havens in the border areas... that is why your (Pakistani) troops are fighting in those areas. I think you recognised that reality. You have been making good progress in that battle against militants,” she said.

Eight persons, including three Policemen and two children, were killed, while 23 others were injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up outside the house of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain in the Khan Sher Garhi area of Peshawar on July 26, according to Daily Times. At the time of the attack, a number of people were gathered in and outside the Awami National Party (ANP) leader’s house to condole the death of his son, Rashid, who was gunned down by militants on July 24. “A suicide bomber blew himself up when a Police constable tried to stop him from entering the residence of the minister,” Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Liaquat Ali said. Eyewitnesses, who had come to offer condolences, said that the suicide bomber, aged between 20 and 22, was wearing black clothes and detonated the explosives when Police tried to stop him from entering Iftikhar’s house. Police said 10 kilogrammes of explosives were used in the attack. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the bombing, saying their goal was to kill Iftikhar Hussain because his political party “is allied with the United States”. “This is just the beginning,” Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan told The Associated Press by telephone. “We will carry out more attacks against the party. We will destroy their roots,” he said.

The Awami National Party (ANP) lost about 485 diehard activists during the ongoing ‘war on terror’ for its tough stance against militants in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and tribal areas over the last many years, Daily Times reported o July 27. Most of the casualties were from Malakand division where the party leaders and workers remained on the hit list of terrorists since 2006. The latest blow was the assassination of Mian Rashid Hussain, the only son of the Provincial Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain, who had been declared by the militants as their “enemy number one” for his harsh statements against them. The nationalist party suffered another blow when a suicide bomber blew himself up near the residence of the information minister in Pabbi when hundreds of women were there to offer condolences to the family and men were offering Fateha in the nearby mosque. Mian Iftikhar is not deterred but ready to sacrifice even his own life. “We all are to die. I am proud of the martyrdom of my son,” the outspoken minister told journalists on Tuesday. “Two of our MPAs have been killed in the bomb attacks. Alamzeb, MPA from Peshawar, was killed in January last year in a roadside blast. Another was Dr Shamsher from Swat, killed in a suicide attack three days after Eid ul Azha in 2009,” said Zahid Hussain, a former nazim of Landi Arbab and the ANP Peshawar chapter office-bearer. Several were lucky to escape unhurt in terror attacks. They include ANP head Asfandyar Wali Khan, who escaped a suicide attack at the family house, Wali Bagh, in 2008. Four people were killed and several wounded in the attack.
