A senior Government official, Syed Mehdi Hussain, was shot dead in Peshawar, capital of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), on June 4-morning, according to Dawn. Police suspect it to be a sectarian attack. Hussain, a Director in the NWFP information department, had no enmity with anyone, according to his brother Sabtain Hussain Shah. The assailants opened fire on Hussain when he was going to his car parked outside his home in Jhanda Bazaar. Armed volunteers with their faces covered have reportedly been patrolling the area during nights and checking vehicles for the past week. The Taliban have told local people to remove ring tones of film songs from their cellular phones and personal computers and replace them with Quranic verses and jihadi songs. The handbills said that Taliban would launch an armed campaign from July 1 against ‘indecency’ and those involved in ‘un-Islamic activities’, including music centres, prize bond dealers, usurers, narcotics dealers, car lifters and barbers who trim beards. A poster pasted on a wall said Taliban would provide alternative self-employment opportunities to those affected by the campaign.

Militants have banned the movement of tribesmen at Darra Adamkhel in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) after 10pm and announced that any vehicle not stopping for ‘checking’ would be fired at, according to Dawn. Posters and handbills purportedly distributed by the Islami Taliban in the town cautioned tribesmen to avoid ‘unnecessary movement’ after 10pm. The handbills warned that if a driver did not stop for checking by the Taliban during the night, they had the right to shoot him. They warned that if any Mujahid was harmed between Akhurwal and Bostikhel areas or anyone was found monitoring activities of the Taliban in the area, it would be considered an ‘unpardonable crime’. "If a person is found creating hindrance for a Talib, he will not be pardoned," said a poster.

According to The News, Taliban militants shaved the heads of seven alleged bandits, blackened their faces and paraded them in a bazaar in North Waziristan, bordering Afghanistan, witnesses said on June 13. Witnesses said the heavily-armed Taliban, mainly students from local Islamic schools, arrested the alleged criminals on June 12 from the Mir Ali town as part of their campaign to curb crime in the region. "The Taliban captured the men they said were involved in snatching vehicles and robberies," a local official said. The militants then drove the men to the main market in Miranshah, headquarters of North Waziristan. "They shaved their heads and blackened their faces," witness Sharif Khan said. After detaining them for half an hour in the market, the Taliban took the alleged criminals to their office in the town to try them under Islamic law, witnesses added.

A tribal Jirga (council) of the Ahmedzai Wazir tribes is to meet on June 15 (today) in Wana, headquarters of South Waziristan, to discuss the issue. “The Taliban are angry at the presence of Uzbeks being hosted by some elders and they demand action against such people,” a tribal elder told Daily Times after attending a council in Wana on June 14. According to him, the Taliban told the Ahmedzai Wazir tribes they had reports that Uzbek militants were “still being sheltered in Wazir areas” and if locals harbour rather than expel them they would take action.

Shopkeepers selling garments and cosmetics for women at Lakki Marwat in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) have received letters in which they have been warned of dire consequences if they don’t close down their businesses immediately, according to Dawn. A shopkeeper said he had received the letter on June 16-morning containing ‘a word from the Taliban’. “The visit of women to the cloth market and other business centres is harmful and against the norms and principles of Sharia. This practice is one of the main causes promoting obscenity and vulgarity in the society,” the letter said. It alleged that shops had been turned into brothels where women were being sexually abused. The letter asked shopkeepers to refrain from selling such items to women and warned that failure to comply with the advice could result in loss of their lives and businesses.

Two people were wounded in a landmine explosion at Miranshah Bazaar in North Waziristan on June 17, according to Daily Times. The two injured men were identified as Hamid Ullah and Gul Sher Khan. Meanwhile, authorities said that they had increased security at existing Frontier Corps check posts and were setting up additional check posts in North Waziristan, following information that “foreign terrorists” based in neighbouring South Waziristan were planning to enter the area. They confirmed that additional check posts were being set up at Boya Rizmak Road, Dosali Garyum, Esha Khujre and Tardoni.

The Taliban have banned TV and video CDs in public in the Wazir areas of South Waziristan, warning that strict punishment will be meted out to violators, according to Daily Times. A pamphlet issued by Mujahideen Waziristan and Aman (Peace) Committee chief Qasim Khan declared that the decision would take effect from June 20. "No tea shop or restaurant in Wana, Azam Warsak, Kaloosha and Angoor Adda will be allowed to show TV shows or play CDs and violators will be fined Rs 20,000 and their establishments will be demolished," the pamphlet pasted in Wana’s Rustam Bazaar read. The pamphlet did not state the reasons for the ban but a senior Taliban leader was quoted as saying the move was aimed at "keeping children away from watching jihadi CDs". Eyewitnesses said all tea shops and restaurants removed TV sets and CD players immediately after the Taliban announced the ban.

At least 22 people were killed and 10 others sustained injuries when a missile hit a cluster of compounds in the Datakhel area of North Waziristan on June 19, according to Dawn. However, a senior government official and the local Taliban said the death toll might be as high as 32. While the exact nature of the explosion is yet to be ascertained, local people said that missiles had hit a seminary, killing several people and wounding scores of others. Daily Times reported that a Madrassa (seminary) used by the Taliban as a hideout was attacked by a US-controlled drone, killing over 20 militants and wounding 15 others. "Two missiles were fired from a pilotless spy plane at around 10am and initial reports say 17 people were killed," said unnamed security officials.

The caretaker of a Madrassa (seminary) near a site in North Waziristan which was the target of a suspected missile strike on June 19 has said that a total of 34 people were killed, and all of them were locals, according to Daily Times. Maulana Muhammad Amir, caretaker of the Ziul Aloom seminary in the Dattakhel area, said all those killed were local tribesmen, and the target was not a Madrassa, as reported in the press, but "a tent on a hilltop". However, the political administration of North Waziristan said that 30 "terrorists" were killed and 18 of them were foreigners, including Chechens, Uzbeks and Arabs, APP reported. Maulana Muhammad Alam, member of a peace committee monitoring implementation of the September 5, 2006-peace accord in North Waziristan, said the political administration "knows little about the air strike and the military says nothing. We don’t know what happened."
