Kantipuronline reports that at least eight persons were injured in a clash between the cadres of the Young Communist League (YCL) and Youth Force, the youth wing of the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML), at Madirambeni Village Development Committee (VDC) in the evening of January 7. Hours after agreeing to join a high-level political mechanism, which is widely seen as a breakthrough in the efforts to find an outlet to the protracted political impasse, Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (Unified CPN-Maoist) chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal aka Prachanda warned that his party would launch 'people's revolt' if the country does not get a new constitution on time and the peace process gets derailed, reports Nepal News. Addressing a programme organised by the local civil society in Biratnagar in the afternoon of January 8, Prachanda said Nepali people would take to the streets if a scenario, which might derail the peace process and scuttle the constitutional-making drive, is created in the country. He added that the parties should be careful not to invite such a scenario. Prachanda also raised objection to Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal's statement on January 7 that the Maoists would face the fate of the Tamil Tigers of Sri Lanka if they continued to engage on violence and intimation. Speaking at the same programme, Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) chairman Jhala Nath Khanal stressed the need for consensus among the parties to write new constitution and conclude the peace process. The CPN-Maoist-led by Matrika Yadav claimed on January 8 that the disqualified combatants who were discharged from the UN-monitored cantonments have joined the party. The breakaway faction of the Unified CPN-Maoist made such claims amid a function in Dhankuta District, a day after the discharge of disqualified Maoist combatants began. CPN-Maoist District secretary Sudarshan said that there has been an increasing trend among the former rebel fighters to walk out of the cantonments and join the party. The Matrika-led Maoist had postponed its plan to make public its "people’s army" as announced earlier. Sudarshan said the army publicising programme would be held on February 7. Kantipuronline reports that the Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (Unified CPN-Maoist) called off its Taplejung general strike after 15 days. Maoists agreed to call off the strike following a three-point agreement reached during an all-party meeting. Kantipuronline reports that two People's Liberation Army (PLA) first division section commanders, Raju Magar alias Sambeg and Suman Luitel alias Bikash, were arrested along with weapons and explosive materials from Itahari in Sunsari District on January 28 while they were trying to collect ransom from Dharan-based businessman Nabin Raj Bhandari. Police recovered one set of hand grenade, a set of pistol, two sets of mobile sets and NR 14,800 from the PLA men. Amongst them, Magar was rendered disqualified by United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) during the verification in 2007 while Luitel was an UN-verified combatant. Read less...
