To win an advantage from the current India-China military standoff in Ladakh, the Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), a US-based separatist Sikh body spearheading a drive to separate Punjab from the rest of India, has now approached Beijing to support its secessionist campaign, reports The Times of India on June 2. As per the report, SFJ's Gurpatwant Singh Pannun wrote a letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping, justifying its position against India and extending the support of pro-Khalistani Sikhs. SFJ’s letter comes a day after Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Amarinder Singh warned China against its bullying tactics on the border and cautioned it to not take India lightly.

Infighting is ongoing within the terror group Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF), more than 4 months after the death of its leader Harmeet Singh alias Happy PhD on January 27, 2020, reports DNA on June 3. In the fray for the leadership of KLF are radical elements from Pakistan, United Kingdom (UK), Italy and Switzerland. As per the report, Pakistan-based Lakhbir Singh Rode also ‘chief’ of International Sikh Youth Federation (ISYF), UK based Paramjeet Singh Panjwar, Gursharanvir Singh Wahiwala, KLF ‘spokesperson’ Dhanna Singh, Italy based Gurjinder Singh Shastri and Switzerland based Pappu Singh are trying to take the leadership of the group. Reportedly, Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) has been backing Lakhbir Singh Rode and Paramjeet Singh Panjwar. Both are trying to get support from cadre based in Italy, Germany, Canada and the UK to become next KLF ‘chief’. Wahiwala and Shastri do not seem to have the support of the ISI, which can make things difficult for them. Also, KLF is now heading towards a schism with a new faction emerging led by UK based Gursharanvir Singh Wahiwala. Wahiwala is getting support from cadres in Canada, US and Italy. What has increased the infighting is Wahiwala alleging that Dhanna Singh, the spokesperson of KLF, is responsible for the killing of Happy PhD.

The Organized Crime Control Unit (OCCU) of Punjab arrested a pro-Khalistan terrorist and one of the most wanted gangsters, identified as - Tejinder Singh alias Teja, from Mohali in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar District while he was, allegedly, trying to mobilise funds for the Khalistan movement on June 2, reports The Week. According to the Police, Teja had recently executed a dacoity in Ludhiana, where he looted 2 kilograms gold. He has, reportedly, confessed that he was arranging money for a spate of targeted killings as part of the Khalistan agenda, and to disrupt the ongoing Operation Blue Star anniversary week in Punjab. Teja has over 25 criminal cases against him, including murder, attempt to murder, car-jacking, and dacoity. He had started out as a gangster but was soon radicalised. He planned the targeted killings at the instance of some hardcore terrorists he met during his imprisonment in various jails. Police also said that he has the support of banned Khalistani outfits. The Director General of Police (DGP) Dinkar Gupta said, “a set of Punjab Police uniform, along with an ID card of Seema Suraksha Bal (SSB) were recovered from his possession. He wanted to use the uniform and card to gain access to restricted areas for commission of various kinds of crimes, including terrorist actions. We have also recovered a Chinese 30 calibre pistol, 10 cartridges and one Chevrolet Optra car.”

Pakistan’s ISI is likely to facilitate a video conference between leaders of various Sikh militant groups operating in Pakistan and other countries as differences have emerged among them following the death of the KLF leader, Harmeet Singh alias Happy PhD, reports The Times of India on June 4. According to intelligence agencies, “There is a cut-throat competition among the Sikh militant groups in Pakistan to become ISI ‘favourite’ and Happy’s murder was a clear-cut result of the dominance of a different Sikh militant outfit. Otherwise, no one could have even touched him, that too outside a gurdwara. We are of the view that ISI will soon hold a video conference among the warring Sikh militant leaders from UK, Europe and Pakistan to bring about a truce.”

The British Sikh Opposition Labour Party MP Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi on June 4, called for an independent inquiry into the extent of the involvement of the then Margaret Thatcher-led British government in Operation Bluestar in June 1984, reports The Tribune. As per the report, the MP raised the issue in the House of Commons to mark 36 years since the Indian Army’s operation at the Golden Temple in Amritsar District of Punjab, also called for a debate on the issue. The MP said, “This week marks 36 years since the then Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, ordered her abhorrent attack on the most revered Sikh shrine, the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar. Despite recent revelations and given the huge demand from within the British Sikh community and the support of the Labour party and other Opposition parties, an independent inquiry to establish the extent of the Thatcher government's involvement in the attack has still not been held.”

Security agencies in Punjab is on alert ahead of the 36th anniversary of Operation Blue Star on June 6, reports The Tribune. As per the report, Police, Paramilitary Forces, and intelligence personnel have been positioned at sensitive places across Amritsar District. Reportedly, every year, prayers are held at the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of the Sikh religion, by the radical Sikh organisation, Dal Khalsa to mark the anniversary of the Army operation carried out to flush out heavily-armed terrorists from inside the complex.Earlier, on June 5,Chief Minister, Amarinder Singh said that nobody would be allowed to disrupt the peace of Punjab, which had lost 35,000 lives during the dark days of terror. “No Punjabi wants this,” he said, adding that it was only a handful of anti-India elements that continued to try and provoke people in the name of Khalistan every now and then. Earlier, the banned US-based pro-Khalistan organisation Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) had given a call to the Sikhs in Pakistan to reach Kartarpur Sahib in Narowal District on June 6, and perform ardas (Sikh prayer) there as the Punjab government has allegedly “deployed forces to stop the Sikhs in (Indian) Punjab.”

The acting chief of Akal Takht, Giani Harpreet Singh, on June 13, said, “Sikhs can’t be defined by the idea of Khalistan alone” and warned the community against Pakistan which has been pushing the Sikh youth towards terrorism and against the Indian Constitution, reports The Times of India. The statement comes a week after Giani Harpreet Singh had supported the idea and demand of Khalistan for Sikhs. The religious leader, however, clarified his statement over Khalistan, warning Sikhs of Punjab that Pakistan was misleading the Sikh youth, pushing them towards terrorism and inciting them through social media. Without mentioning names, he indirectly hit out at the US-based banned pro-Khalistan organisation, Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) and its leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, saying "many political leaders were making unnecessary statements" about his statement. Meanwhile, despite the Akal Takht acting chief’s latest attempts to clarify his earlier comments on ‘Khalistan’, SFJ has urged him to perform ‘ardas’ on July 4, when it will begin voter registration for ‘Referendum 2020’ to seek people’s opinion on separate Punjab from rest of India, reports The Times of India on June 16. “SFJ is opening voter registration in Punjab on July 4, 2020, for non-governmental Referendum 2020 and we seek Sri Akal Takht Sahib’s blessings in this endeavour for Sikhs’ rights,” Pannu urged the acting Jathedar. Moreover, commenting on the chief of Akal Takht’s earlier statement, the SFJ had said, "All Indian leaders who are issuing statements against the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC)-appointed Akal Takht head will be held accountable as unlawful enemy combatants at international forums."

The Special Court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) at Mohali in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar District of Punjab dismissed the bail application of a UK citizen identified as Jagtar Singh alias Jaggi Johal, accused in targeted killing cases in the State, reports Indian Express on June 25. The bail plea of the accused was dismissed on the ground that he was part of a “larger conspiracy to destabilise the security of Punjab”. The case was initially registered on February 4, 2016, under section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 25 of Arms Act at Basti Jodhewal Police Station in Ludhiana, on the complaint lodged by Amit Arora. Thereafter, investigation of the case was handed over to NIA on December 8, 2017. During the investigation, the NIA found that Hardeep Singh alias Shera and Ramandeep Singh alias Bagga tried to murder Arora on February 3, 2016, at Basti Jodhewal. It was also found that an attempt made to kill Arora was part of a larger conspiracy hatched by the terrorist organisation Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF), which involved eight incidents of targeted killings/attempted killings and objective of this conspiracy was to destabilise the law and order in the State. It has also come on record that funds facilitated by Johal were handed over to accused Hardeep Singh, who along with Ramandeep Singh used them to carry out the incidents of targeted killings.
