Assam Tribune reports that displaced Brus, currently lodged in six camps of Tripura, have demanded that they be resettled in Kolasib and Mamit Districts of Mizoram in grouped villages. A memorandum submitted to the Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla by Mizoram Bru Displaced People’s Forum (MBDPF) in Aizawl rejected the State’s proposal that the Brus on repatriation would settle in the villages they stayed in before taking refuge in Tripura in 1997, sources said on January 12. Mizoram Home Minister R. Lalzirliana rejected the proposal of the Bru leaders to settle them in the two Districts and accused them of refusing to return to Mizoram as they were enjoying comfortable lives in the relief camps, the sources said. The Brus demanded elaborate security arrangement for the community and inclusion of the community in the Primitive Tribals Group, besides being given job reservation. The memorandum said that the Bru resettlers be provided free ration including mosquito nets, utensils, garments, blankets, salt, kerosene, shoes, soaps and other essentials for a year. The MBDPF demanded INR 100, 000 be given to each of the families whose houses were set ablaze during the communal tension triggered by the killing of a 17 year-old Mizo youth by suspected Bru militants at Bungthuam village on the Mizoram-Tripura border on November 13, 2009, besides INR 30,000 for each family for reconstruction of their homes. The other demands were establishment of Central school, college, polytechnic school, cultural academy, Information Technology (IT) centre and a hospital in the Bru-inhabited areas, the sources said. The proposed repatriation of Bru refugees from Tripura from November 16, 2009 was derailed by the killing just three days before. Lal Thanhawla had recently announced that the proposed expenditure for repatriation of Brus from Tripura had already been sanctioned and that some Bru leaders had rejected the repatriation proposal as they are getting benefits from the relief camps. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Mizoram Police on January 17 arrested two militants who were involved in the November 13, 2009 killing of a Mizo youth, Zarzokima (18) of Bungthuam, according to Assam Tribune. They were identified as Vanlalfela and Chusarai alias Lalrinfela. One seal bearing a ‘logo’ of the United Liberation Army (ULA) outfit and donation receipt were recovered from their possession. Mizoram Home Minister R. Lalzirliana said that ULA was involved in extorting money at areas of Tripura and Assam bordering Mizoram. He said, “They had even kidnapped businessmen from the plain areas for ransom”. The report adds that Vanlalfela was a cadre of the Bru National Liberation Front (BNLF) and was involved in various crimes. Due to internal rivalry and tensions, Vanlalfela left the BNLF in 2005 and became a cadre of the Bru Liberation Front of Mizoram (BLFM). He, along with 20 other BLFM cadres, refused to surrender when 802 strong cadres of the BLFM surrendered in 2006, the Mizoram Police said. Chisurai joined the BLFM in 2006.
