A Dhaka court on November 5 awarded death penalty to 150 members of the erstwhile Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and two civilians for their role in the massacre of 74 people, including 57 army officers, at the BDR Pilkhana headquarters in 2009, reports The Daily Star. It also sentenced 161 others, including ex- Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) lawmaker Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu and ward-level Awami League (AL) leader Torab Ali, to life imprisonment for involvement in the carnage. On February 25-26 in 2009, the bloodbath at the Pilkhana headquarters of the paramilitary force that has been renamed Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) left the nation shaken to the core. It unnerved the Sheikh Hasina-led Government that had assumed office barely a month back.

At least 178 people were injured in clashes, arson, vandalism and blasts during the second day of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led 18-party countrywide 60-hour hartal (general strike) on November 5, reports The Daily Star.In Dhaka city, six Jatiya Sramik League (JSL) activists suffered injuries when miscreants exploded crude bombs at a rally of the pro-Awami League (AL) labour organisation at Motijheel area. Meanwhile, Pickets torched a pick-up van near the entrance to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) headquarters at Pilkhana leaving its driver Al-Amin (20) burnt badly. In Chittagong District, at least nine people, including two children and two TV cameramen, were injured in clashes during hartal hours. Hasanullah and Shamsul Alam Babu, cameramen of Desh TV and Channel-i, were injured when a homemade bomb was hurled at a patrol vehicle of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from a BNP procession at Station Road. Meanwhile, Lal Mia (8) and Surma (9) suffered injuries when a homemade bomb, abandoned by the roadside in Khulshi blasted after they picked it up.In Munshiganj District, at least 55 people, including three Policemen, were injured in a triangular clash between the activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the student wing of BNP ruling Awami League (AL) and Police.In Comilla District, activists of AL and Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) fought pitched battles at Gunoboti bazaar leaving at least 35 persons injured.In Thakurgaon District, at least 25 people, including three Policemen, were injured in a clash between BNP and AL men at Thakurgaon town’s intersection.In Chandpur District, at least 30 people were injured when a clash broke out between AL and BNP men at Baharia Bazar.In Bogra District, at least 17 people were injured when pro-hartal pickets hurled around five crude bombs and brickbats at a train at Bogra Railway Station.
