28 persons including 20 civilians, six militants and two Police officers were killed in a hostage crisis at Holey Artisan Bakery, a Spanish restaurant at Dhaka city’s Gulshan diplomatic zone, reports The Daily Star on July 2. Joint Security Force led by Army brought to end an unprecedented hostage situation rescuing 13 people who include Indian and Japanese citizens almost 12 hours after gunmen stormed the popular restaurant. Around 53 people, including several Policemen, were injured in an exchange of gunfire between Police and gunmen who stormed a Spanish restaurant on July 1 night and took the people inside hostage. One militant was arrested in the incident. According to US-based SITE Intelligence Group, Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility of the attack. The deceased Police officers are Rabiul Islam, Assistant Commissioner of Detective Branch of Police and Salahuddin Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge Banani Police Station. Joint Security Force recovered 20 bodies during a search on the compound of the Spanish restaurant. Most of the victims were killed brutally with sharp weapons. A pistol used by terrorists, folded butt AK 22 rifle, Improvised Explosive Device (IED), walkie-talkie set and a large number of locally made sharp weapons were recovered from the spot.

AKM Shahidul Hoque, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Police Headquarters, Dhaka city on July 3 said that primary investigation suggests that some members of banned militant outfits Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) carried out the Gulshan terror attack jointly following in-depth reconnaissance at the restaurant, reports Dhaka Tribune. He said that the law enforcers had been looking for five of them, all JMB members, for their involvement in some other recent attacks. They were not sure about the other attacker who was killed in the operation. Regarding IS link, the Police chief said that the attackers might have established connection with international groups “but we are not aware about it. We will be able to clarify the matter after investigation.”

Police arrested three ‘suicide squad’ members of Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) from Kalihati sub-District of Tangail District on July 6, reports The Daily Star. The arrestees were identified as Jannati alias Jemy (18), Sajida Akter (22) and Rozina Begum (30). Police recovered two machetes, a knife, a mobile phone containing videos of slaughtering techniques and a script of bomb-making technique from them. Police said that the women, their husbands are JMB’s ‘suicide squad’ members. However, Police could not arrest the husbands.

Police on July 19 arrested 27 cadres of JeI-ICS from different parts of the country, reports The Daily Star. In Dhaka city, 19 ICS cadres were arrested from a house in Khilgaon area. Seven crude bombs, four machetes and a computer were recovered from them. In Dinajpur District, Police also arrested five ICS cadres from a mess at Ramnagar while they were holding a secret meeting at the mess. In Rangpur District, two JeI activists Abul Basar Md Abdur Rahim (45) and Mohamad Nuruzzaman (65) accused in arson cases were arrested from their houses. In Kurigram District, Police arrested District JeI ameer (chief) Azizur Rahman Swapan when he was marching with others in an anti-terrorism procession. Police said that Azizur is an accused in sabotage-related cases.

Nine militants were killed on July 26during a special drive of the joint forces in Dhaka city’s Kalyanpur area, reports The Daily Star. Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Detective Branch (DB) of Police and Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) jointly carried out a one-hour ‘Operation Storm 26’ from 5:51am and neutralised the nine militants in the operation. One militant identified as Hassan wasarrested from the spot with bullet injuries. He claimed to be a member of the Islamic State (IS). A senior law enforcement official requesting anonymity confirmed that as a part of a new technique, militants were now renting flats in areas where low income populations and garment workers live. Small groups of militants, usually numbering seven to nine, are living in these flats, the official said. In some cases they are using family members to rent flats.
