A potato laden truck was torched by some unknown miscreants at Chilapganj area of Habiganj District leaving three people seriously injured. Meanwhile, Finance Minister AMA Muhith at a meeting in Dhaka city on February 2 said that the ongoing hartal (general strike) and blockade are not now political related programmes, rather terrorist matters, reports Dhaka Tribune. In the meeting, Muhith said: “We now treat hartal and blockade as terrorist matters. The ongoing hartal and blockade should be stopped within short time.”

In the deadliest arson attack since January 5, the day the BNP-led 20-party alliance announced non-stop nationwide blockade, seven persons were killed and 20 others were injured as blockaders hurled a petrol bomb at a bus in Chouddagram of Comilla District. The deceased were identified as Nuruzzaman Poplu, Mysha Tasnim, Abu Taher, Abu Yusuf, Asma Begum, Shanto and Mohammad Wasim. Doctors fear the death toll may rise, as three of the six patients under treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital were in a critical condition. In Jessore District, two activists of Jubo Dal, the youth wing of BNP, were killed as a truck ran them over while they were trying to hurl petrol bombs at the vehicle in Monirampur. The deceased were identified as Liton Ali (22) and Yusuf Mia (25). In Dhaka city, another arson victim, Kamal Hossain, a pick-up van driver, died of his wounds at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Kamal, his assistant Milon and nephew Jewell were injured when blockaders hurled several petrol bombs at his rice-laden vehicle on February 2.

Three persons were killed and many others were injured during the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led 20-party alliance's countrywide blockade on February 4, reports The Daily Star. In Dhaka city, two youths were killed in a gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Jatrabari area. The identities of the youths, aged between 25 and 30, could not be confirmed. RAB officials said that when a team of RAB was patrolling in Jatrabari area all of a sudden, brick chunks were hurled at the RAB vehicle. Several crude bombs went off on the road and gun shots were fired at the team, forcing the law enforcers to open fire on the thugs. Later, RAB found two bullet-hit people lying in a pool of blood there. One gun, two petrol bombs and eight crude bombs were recovered from the spot. In another incident, Rashedul (25), who had suffered 80 percent burn injuries on February 3 gruesome firebomb attack on a bus in Comilla District died at the Intensive Care Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Separately, a suspected bomber, Kawsar Khan was injured when Police shot for blasting crude bombs at Amtoli in Shahjahanpur area. Police said they fired three shots at Kawsar when he was fleeing the area after exploding two crude bombs. Kawsar received bullets in his legs. In Gazipur District, pickets firebombed a passenger bus in Noujani area burning at least five including a child. The victims are Rakib (12), Mohammad Sabuj (20), Kamrul Hasan (28), Jahangir Hossain (42) and Mariam Akter Rupa (7). In Chittagong District, two rickshaw pullers were injured as suspected blockade supporters blasted crude bombs. In drives against the violence that has been plaguing the country for a month now, law enforcers arrested 34 people in Satkhira District and three Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) activists in Bogra District.

Jasim Uddin (26), a cadre of ICS was killed in a shootout in Dhaka city on February 8, reports The Daily Star. Police said that they arrested six ICS cadres including Jasim on February 7 following an attack on traffic sergeant Golam Mawla at Shishu Mela crossing near Shyamoli. After obtaining information from Jasim, a Police team took him to Taltola to arrest ICS leader Delwar and his ccomplices. As the team reached the area, Delwar and his accomplices hurled crude bombs at and opened fire on Police. At one point, they snatched Jasim away from Police custody. Police too opened fire on them. Although the ICS cadres managed to flee, Jasim's bullet-hit body was found later. Police recovered two crude and four petrol bombs from the spot.
