A Dhaka Court remanded Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) cadre Hossain Ahmed Tamim for seven days, reports Dhaka Tribune on April 2. Tamim is accused in two cases. First case was filed over a grenade attack on an Awami League (AL) rally on Bangabandhu Avenue on August 21, 2004, that killed 24 people and scores injured. Recently on March 24, Police seized a bag from the possession of Tamim which had a cocktail, Samsung mobile handset, four SIM cards, a magnet, and a radio set in it.

Tofail said “BNP is indulging in wrong politics. Preparing to contest the upcoming city elections and continuing its blockade and strike programme cannot go together. It is self contradictory. If they want to join the elections, they will first have to call off their programme.”

The political situation across the country appears to be looking up following her return, though the BNP is yet to decide upon withdrawing its call for non-stop blockade. Khaleda had confined herself to her Gulshan office since January 3. She did not come out even after the death of her younger son Arafat Rahman Koko on January 24, 2015.

A Kishoreganj District Court on April 8 sentenced United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) leader Ranjan Chowdhury alias Major Ranjan (46), former General Secretary of Dhubri District unit of ULFA and his Bangladeshi aide Pradip Marak (57) to life term imprisonment, reports The Independent. The Court also fined the duo BTK 20000 each. On July 17, 2010, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Ranjan Chowdhury and his Bangladeshi aide from Bhairab sub-District in Kishoreganj District. The elite forcer also recovered one pistol, one revolver, four handmade bombs and some bomb making materials from Ranjan’s hideout at Lakshmipur village in Bhairab. RAB filed four separate cases, including for intrusion, arms, explosives and terrorism, against the duo with Bhairab Police Station.

The Prosecution on April 19 pressed five charges against eight Al-Badr men for their alleged involvement in crimes against humanity committed in Jamalpur District during the Liberation War, reports The Daily Star. The charges include murder, abduction and torture. The crimes were committed in between April 22 and December 11, 1971 in Jamalpur District. The charges were brought for the eights' alleged involvement in nine criminal incidents. The accused are Ashraf Hossain (64), Professor Sharif Ahammed (71), Abdul Mannan (66), Abdul Bari (62), Harun (58), Abul Hashem (65), Shamsul Haque (75) and AKM Yusuf Ali, 83. Shamsul and Yusuf are in jail while the rest are absconding.

15 persons were injured when Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia's motorcade came under attack by pro-ruling Awami League (AL) activists during her election campaign at the Dhaka city's Karwan Bazar on April 20, reports The Daily Star. Around 150 activists of Jubo League, Swechchhasebak League, Shramik League and Chhatra League showered the vehicles with brick chips and wooden sticks. Khaleda's bullet-proof car was damaged but she was unhurt. Some 15 people, including her personal secretary, got injured.

Seven persons were injured when a group of around 70 pro-Awami League (AL) activists on April 22 attacked Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia's motorcade with wooden sticks and threw brick chips at it in Dhaka city's Bangla Motor area, reports The Daily Star. Witnesses said “A group of alleged pro-AL men chanting ‘Joy Bangla’ slogan swooped on the BNP chief's motorcade as it was waiting at the traffic signal of the crossing.” Five vehicles in the motorcade and two cars of two private TV stations travelling with those were damaged partially. The BNP chief was going to Old Dhaka for electioneering for party-backed mayoral candidate Mirza Abbas in Dhaka South City Corporation. Following the incident, Khaleda cancelled her programme and went directly to her party's Nayapaltan central office.

The arrestees were identified as Babul Sarker and Mintu Prodhan. Police said that the arrestees were involved in a militant group and earlier they worked for Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI). Police also recovered 5 machetes, huge amount of bomb making explosive and jihadi books from their possession.

A Dhaka court on April 30 indicted 65 leaders and cadres Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) in a case of vandalism and arson at Motijheel area in Dhaka city, reports Dhaka Tribune. Metropolitan Magistrate Tariq Moinul Islam Bhuiyan framed the charges against the accused and fixed June 10 to start the trial. On November 5, 2012, the JeI-ICS leaders and cadres brought out a procession demanding release of their top leaders who were arrested on charges of War Crimes. A clash occurred between them and Police that day, where at least 50 people were injured. On November 13, 2012, Sub-Inspector Mofizur Rahman submitted the charge sheet against them at the court in Dhaka city.
