Sri Lanka on February 25 reiterated it concern over the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) practice of selectively adopting country specific resolutions and suggested the Universal Periodic Review as the appropriate mechanism to address the human rights situation of all countries, reports Colombo Page. Replying to the report of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on the situation of human rights in Belarus in the run-up to the presidential election and its aftermath at the Enhanced Interactive dialogue of the 46th Session of the UNHRC in Geneva, Sri Lanka encouraged the Council to engage constructively and objectively when addressing human rights situations. “We reiterate our concern over the continuing discriminatory practice of selective adoption of country specific resolutions in the Human Rights Council, which breaches the principles of universality, impartiality and non-selectivity stipulated in GA resolution 60/251 and the IB package,” Sri Lanka said.
