A group of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres trying to infiltrate the Forward Defence Lines at Thannankilappu in the Jaffna district when were rounded up by the troops on April 19, opened small arms fire and simultaneously lobbed hand grenades towards troops, reported Sri Lanka Army (SLA). At the same time, a few huge explosions were heard from areas where the outfit cadres were hiding. During subsequent search operations in the area, troops recovered three dead bodies of LTTE cadres who had committed suicide by blowing themselves up. They also recovered three T-56 weapons, five hand grenades, a suicide jacket and live ammunition rounds from the incident site.

On April 19, Chilaw Police in the Puttalam district recovered two claymore mines each weighing four kg, eight hand grenades and four meters of detonator wire, hidden in a well of the house at Battalu Oya in the Udappuwa area after the disclosure of a LTTE suspect arrested two weeks ago. The occupant of the house was also taken into custody. Chilaw Police also recovered two T-56 magazines, containing 18 and 30 live rounds of ammunition hidden at another house at Sellapuram following information given by the LTTE suspect, the Police Media spokesman Senior DIG Jayantha Wickramaratne said. He added, "The police team were obstructed by a mob when they were returning after arresting the occupant of the house where the explosives were uncovered. The mobs were supporters of the suspect and the police was forced to open fire to disperse the mob," adding further, a member of the mob and another suspect taken into custody were injured in the incident.

Military spokesman Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe told the weekly security press briefing that seven hand grenades, three cyanide capsules, one radio set and jungle boots were found inside St. Mary’s Church Jaffna on February 20. He said, "… It is obvious that they had planned for an attack on the Security Forces using the church premises as cover, thus compelling the Security Forces to retaliate", the Brigadier added. "The military had to carry out the operation as the terrorists were targeting our camps in the area and risking supply lines… During the past 72 hours, the Army, supported by artillery and mortars, successfully neutralised the three bases," said military spokespersons Brig.
