Polls for the first post-war parliamentary elections in Sri Lanka opened on April 8 (today) morning at 7:00 a.m. (SLT) amid heavy security, reports Colombo Page. The polls will close at 4:00 p.m. This is the first parliamentary election held after winning the war against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) terrorism. Over 14 million registered voters are eligible to cast their ballots at 11,098 polling centers throughout the country including the LTTE controlled Northern and Eastern provinces. Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapakse who was elected to a second term earlier in 2010 has already cast his vote early this morning at the D.A Rajapaksa Vidyalaya in his hometown of Medamulana in Hambanthota District. Voters are to elect 196 candidates to the 225-member parliament. A total of 7,620 candidates representing 36 parties and 301 independent groups are vying for a slot. Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dishanayake called on the voters to cast their ballots early to prevent voter fraud. The Government says it has taken every measure to ensure a free and fair election. However, nearly 60,000 Police officers have been deployed to ensure security at the poling booths and counting centers. They will be assisted by over 19,000 armed forces personnel and Special Task Force (STF) Police to maintain security.

The Hindu adds that of the results of 180 seats declared so far, the UPFA has won in 120 constituencies. The outcome of the elections to the 225-member House shows that there is no change in the public mood since the January 26, 2010 Presidential election in which Mahinda Rajapakse secured a second tenure by nearly 18 percentage points over the candidate backed by the entire Opposition. The main Opposition grouping, led by the United National Party (UNP), has so far bagged only 47 seats. The Democratic National Alliance (DNA), the third front led by the defeated common consensus Presidential candidate and the former Army Chief General (retired) Sarath Fonseka, has fared poorly, securing less than half-a-dozen seats.

The official final tally of the new Parliament is expected to be delayed for at least two weeks, as the Election Commission has withheld the results of 12 seats in the Kandy District following complaints of irregularities in some polling booths. Though the six-week campaign in the run-up to the elections did not evoke much interest among the people, the outcome was watched with keen interest as it is the first general election in the island nation after the military defeat of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the death of its leader Velupillai Prabakaran in May 2009. The pro-LTTE Tamil National Alliance (TNA) bagged a dozen of the 20 seats for which the results have been declared so far in the provinces of north and east.
