A fishing boat laden with explosives blew up on February 11 off the northwest coast of Sri Lanka after a naval vessel tried to intercept and search it, the Sri Lankan Navy said. A Government statement said it was believed that the boat was carrying weapons to territory controlled by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), according to New York Times. A Navy spokesperson, D. Dassanayake, said the patrol craft's crew saw four men on the boat before it exploded. "The LTTE must have tried to avoid an arms detection and caused the huge explosion," he said. He added that a sailor had been seriously wounded in the blast. "Initial reports from the LTTE indicated one of their vessels were involved in an incident at sea, but they later said they had no involvement," said Helen Olafsdottir, spokeswoman for a team of European monitors overseeing the truce.

Six Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres and eight sailors were feared killed, when a boat heading to northern Sri Lanka and carrying LTTE cadres exploded off the northwest coast on March 25 near a naval craft, a military spokesman said. The boat, believed to be carrying explosives, was approached by a Naval Fast Attack Craft to carry out an inspection when it exploded in the Kalpititya region, 200 km north of capital Colombo, informed Brigadier Pradsad Samarasinghe. People aboard are believed to have detonated the vessel to avoid detection, he said. The naval craft sank and 11 sailors were rescued. A search operation for the sailors was in progress, but they are presumed dead, the navy said. "The suicide-style explosion carried out by the crew of the trawler causing damage to a naval vessel and claiming the lives of Navy personnel is a violation of the cease-fire," the Government said in a statement. However, the LTTE denied any involvement in the incident. "We never engage in any offensive operations against the Sri Lankan army and navy," S. Puleedevan, head of the LTTE Peace Secretariat, told Reuters by satellite telephone from Kilinochchi. "There is no (Tiger) connection to this attack," he claimed.

At least sixty-four civilians, including 15 children, were killed and eighty-six others were injured when a state-run passenger bus carrying 150 passengers was destroyed in a twin side-charger claymore mine explosion in the Anuradhapura district on June 15. The Government's spokesperson on security issues, Keheliya Rambukwella, blamed the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) for the attack saying, "There is no iota of doubt that it is the LTTE." He also said, "There is no declaration of War, the peace agreement is on, but, we have to look at it very seriously", adding that the Government would not hesitate to take military action if needed, to safeguard the civilians. Subsequent to the attack, security forces (SFs) carried out an aerial attack in the LTTE-held Sampoor and Maullativu area and drooped bombs near the outfit headquarters of Kilinochchi on June 16, today. However, no casualties were reported in these incidents. Meanwhile, the LTTE denied its involvement and blamed the Government for the attack. Reacting to the SFs aerial attack, head of the outfit’s peace secretariat, S. Puleedevan, told Reuters, "If they are attacking Kilinochchi, they are showing they are ready for war."

Reuters has reported that Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) conducted air strike, using Kfir fighter jets, on known LTTE targets in the general areas (areas under Government control) of Verugal in the Trincomalee district where the outfit were keeping the sluice gate closed without allowing water to flow into thousands of Sinhalese, Muslims and Tamil villages since July 20. The SLAF spokesperson, Group Captain Ajantha Silva, said, "The government want to send irrigation engineers to the location. That is why we have taken action against identified rebel targets in that area. It was an aerial bombing raid." The Government accused the outfit of blocking water supplies to farmland in Trincomalee, where the Government and outfit both control territory. A Government statement, referring to the air raids, said the "limited operation" was conducted purely on "humanitarian grounds" to neutralize the disruptive forces it said were preventing free flow of water to over 15,000 families. However, S. Elilan, a top LTTE leader in Trincomalee, blaming the military, stated that Sri Lankan air force jets struck three times, wounding two civilians and destroying two houses. He added that the outfit suffered no casualties.
