The battle marked the opening of a new front in escalating hostilities between soldiers and the outfit cadres in the Northwest, as fighting had previously been concentrated in Northern and Eastern districts. Military spokesman Brig. Prasad Samarasinghe said, "Even this morning terrorists fired artillery and mortars at our troops and we retaliated. Our aim is to neutralize the terrorists' artillery and mortar positions in the area so that civilian settlements and our camps are safe," adding, soldiers recovered weapons, ammunition and other military equipment from the area. However, LTTE military spokesman Rasiah Ilanthiraiyan said, "…This morning a contingent of army troops intruded into our parts of Mannar district ... and are holding 120 families in a village as human shields while they are firing at us."
