Many LTTE fighter crafts had been damaged by Air Force bombing,” the Media Center for National Security said. It also said that another two senior female Sea Tiger leaders ‘Major’ Thuwarika and ‘Lt.’ Senthamani were killed and nine were wounded due to the air strike. Naval intelligence has also revealed that this location covering a two-km area has been declared by the LTTE as a high security zone prohibited for civilians. The LTTE, as reported earlier, had claimed the air raid killed eight civilians, including three young children, an allegation denied by the SLAF.

The troops captured Mulankavil, the second most powerful administrative base for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the Kilinochchi district, on August 13, reports Sri Lankan Army. 20 militants, including one area leader identified as Thennaman, were killed during the incident. The security forces (SFs) captured Mulankavil town, along the Mannar Pooneryn A-32 road where the LTTE had their ‘national’ stadium and a massive cemetery, military officials told Daily News. According to Brigadier Shavendra Silva, General Officer Commanding of the 58 Division, the capture of Mulankavil is a bigger victory for the Army since it was considered the second most important township in the Kilinochchi district after Kilinochchi town. According to ground troops there had been more than 500 graves of LTTE cadres buried between May 20 and July 18 and a massive area has been cleared for graves. A large number of LTTE offices have also been located within Mulankavil giving the impression that the LTTE had used this township as one of their administrative centres in the Kilinochchi district. The troops have now pushed the LTTE further north on the A-32 road towards Nachchakuda, the last Sea Tiger (sea wing of the LTTE) base on the North Western coast.

At least 25 Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) militants and four soldiers were killed while about 25 militants and 14 soldiers were injured as troops captured a 1.5-kilometres stretch of the huge earth bund at Karampaikkulam, eight kilometres northeast of Nachchakuda, in the Kilinochchi district on September 17, Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara told Daily News. "Troops attached to the 58 Division captured 15 to 20 Tiger bunkers along this stretch of the earth bund amidst heavy resistance from the LTTE", he added. Troops also effectively foiled two counter attacks by the LTTE to recapture the lost terrain. The huge earth bund which is 12 to 14 feet in height, a ditch six feet deep and 12 to 14 feet wide had been constructed from Nachchakuda to Akkarayankulam by the LTTE and was posing a huge obstacle for the troops in their advance towards the North.

Jayapuram is located some seven kilometres north of Nachchakuda where the LTTE is having one of their main Sea Tiger (sea wing of the LTTE) bases in the North Western coast. “On three occasions on Friday and Saturday troops hit three Tiger vehicles bringing in reinforcements to this front killing more than 40 Tiger cadres,” the sources added. A senior leader was also feared killed as the troops operating south of Pooneryn hit one of the double cabs which was escorted by a few cadres of the outfit on October 10-evening. “Troops operating in the Minnukulam west also hit two vehicles bringing reinforcements to the area on Saturday,” the sources added. Troops of the 58 Division on November 11 moved further towards Pooneryn after capturing the Valayakudiyurippumoddai defence line in the Kilinochchi district held by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) for the past few days, killing over 30 militants and capturing five dead bodies of the militants. This came hours after the security forces (SFs) captured the Palavi fishing village in the west of Mannar-Pooneryn A-32 road, military sources told Daily News. According to military sources, heavy fighting erupted in the Valayakudiyurippumoddai defence line located some four kilometres east of Chempankundu on the A-32 road and five kilometres south of Pooneryn-Paranthan road. This military success allows the troops to advance towards the vital Pooneryn Paranthan road which is the northernmost supply route linking the Western coast to the A-9 road. Hours before the capture of this defence line the 58 Division operating in the Western edge of the Kilinochchi district dominated the Palavi fishing village the last fishing village before Pooneryn on the Western coast of the country, located some six and half kilometres west of the 8th Mile Post on the A-32 road. The LTTE is left with only Valaipadu and Devil’s Point on the Western coast as their unloading points in the Western coast before Pooneryn, the northern most township on the Western coast.

More than 50 Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) militants were killed and over 60 others injured by the Security Forces (SFs) as clashes erupted between the two sides when the Task Force-I troops on December 31 entered the strategically important Paranthan town after cutting off the Jaffna-Kandy (A-9) road from the north of Paranthan junction, Army Commander Lt. General Sarath Fonseka told Daily News. ”Troops have already entered Paranthan and are short of only 100 meters to reach Paranthan junction. They will fully capture the Paranthan junction within the course of Wednesday night… We have taken the control over the beach front from the North of Paranthan, completely cutting off the links the LTTE is having with the Jaffna front through A-9 road”, the Army Commander said. Paranthan is a strategically important four way junction town in the remaining areas held by the LTTE in Wanni and the North as it connects Pooneryn in the West, Mullaitivu in the East, Kilinochchi in the South, and Jaffna and Muhamalai in the North to one main hub through B-69, A-35 and A-9 roads. While moving towards Paranthan, Task Force-I troops also captured the entire earth bund in the Adampan village opening yet another gateway to Kilinochchi from the North. Separately, the 57 Division troops advanced towards the Kilinochchi build up area after passing the Iranamadu junction from the West of A-9 road. ”The 57 Division troops are just short of two and half kilo meters from the Kilinochchi station”, the Division Commander said. He said the SFs are determined to eradicate LTTE terrorism fully from the country in 2009 and these victories reflect the possibility of achieving that victory soon. ”The LTTE will not exist until the year 2010. We are confident of eradicating LTTE fully in the year 2009”, the Commander added.
