According to the Daily Mirror, the Karuna faction of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is reported to have received the promise of a Cabinet portfolio from one of the main parties contesting the forthcoming general elections. The report added that one of the successful Tamil National Alliance (TNA) candidates from Batticaloa would receive a Cabinet portfolio. However, the Karuna faction spokesperson Varathan declined to comment on the offer of a portfolio but confirmed that TNA candidates in Ampara and Batticaloa districts were supporting the faction.

According to Daily News, brisk polling was reported across Sri Lanka, including the North-East, as more than 75 per cent of the registered 12.89 million voters exercised their franchise on April 2. The voter turnout is reported to have exceeded 80 per cent in some districts. Most areas remained peaceful during the nine-hour voting period and Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake said that "Election laws were very well enforced and I am grateful to the police as well as all others responsible for it… The election was generally peaceful, compared to previous elections."

President Chandrika Kumaratunga's United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) led the race in the island's 13th Parliamentary elections, winning 47 of the 85 seats for which results were declared. After the announcement of results from 10 electoral districts Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's United National Party (UNP) trailed behind the UPFA with 32 seats, followed by the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) getting three seats. When the official confirmation of results were called off on April 3 evening, more than two-thirds of the votes had been counted and the UPFA had polled 3,966,962 votes against UNP's 3,185,679 accounting for 47.2 per cent of the total votes polled. The UNP secured 37.9 per cent. The Jathika Hela Urumaya polling 6.3 per cent votes emerged as the third political force, securing three seats followed by the Tamil National Alliance with 5.9 per cent and the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress 1.5 per cent.

Four persons were killed and at least 17 others sustained injured in election-related violence even as Jammu and Kashmir reportedly witnessed a moderate turnout in the two constituencies of Jammu and Baramulla which went to polls in the first phase of elections to the Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament) on April 20. According to preliminary estimates, Baramulla witnessed 36 percent polling while in Jammu-Poonch constituency it was 45 percent.

In the third phase of the Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament) elections on May 5, polling was held in the Anantnag-Pulwama constituency amidst a series of terrorist attacks in which one person was killed and at least 20 others sustained injuries. Preliminary reports indicated that there was a 16% turnout of voters in the constituency, in which the ruling People’s Democratic Party president and daughter of the Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, is in the fray. In the Chief Minister’s hometown of Bijbehara, seven persons, including five police personnel, were wounded when terrorists hurled a hand grenade targeting a polling booth. At Anantnag town, a civilian was killed and three others were injured during a grenade attack in the KP Road area. A grenade attack on a Border Security Force (BSF) vehicle was reported at Arwani in Bijbehara without causing any damage. Further, one BSF personnel was wounded during a grenade attack on a polling station in Kokernag. During a separate grenade attack on a polling station in the Tral area, one police personnel was injured. Three BSF personnel and two more persons were injured in a separate attack on a polling station at Largam in Tral. A girl was injured when two terrorists opened fire at Neelora in Pulwama. State Director General of Police Gopal Sharma said that in addition to the above, eleven grenade attacks took place at different places in the last 24 hours. However, no one was injured or killed in these attacks.

According to Telegraph on September 6, left-wing extremist outfits (also known as Naxalites), the Maoist Communist Centre (MCC) and the People’s War Group (PWG), have decided to withdraw from the proposed peace talks in the State of Jharkhand due to the forthcoming Legislative Assembly elections. A circular issued by the PWG leadership for its rank-and-file says the outfit has officially decided not to go in for talks with the State Government after deliberations on the issue. "There is no point in talking to a government which is about to go. Talks would be meaningful only if the government is here to stay for a longer period," the circular said.

According to Nation, the Afghan Deputy Defence Minister, Abdur Rashid Dostum, has alleged that Pakistan was interfering in the forthcoming presidential elections in his country by pressuring Afghan refuges to vote for incumbent President Hamid Karzai. However, talking to Geo Television, Foreign Office spokesperson Masood Khan while denying these allegations said, "I cannot believe that Dostum has uttered such a statement because nothing like that is happening here."
