Pakistani media professionals are vowing to maintain a free press in the face of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP)'s recent threats against them, and the country is calling for broad support of the media, given their key role in the war against terrorism, Central Asia Online reported on January 17. "Several journalists have lost their lives for the truth," KP Inspector General of Police Nasir Khan Durrani said. "[But] the police will take any security measure to protect media men and media houses." The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Shura, under the leadership of Mullah Fazlullah, recently decided unanimously to target journalists or news outlets that carry what they call "fabricated" statements that "tarnish" the TTP's image or that of their spokesman, Shahidullah Shahid. But journalists remain committed to providing accurate accounts of what is happening in society. "The media have to convey a true picture to the masses," Peshawar-based senior journalist and Khyber Union of Journalists (KhUJ) President Nisar Mehmood told Central Asia Online. "No doubt journalists, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa [KP] and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas [FATA], are facing death threats, but still we have to depict a true picture of society and convey the truth," he said. The threats will not destroy journalistic principles, journalist and former Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) secretary general Mazhar Abbas said.

The coordinator of Taliban-appointed negotiation committee, Yousuf Shah, on February 18 cautioned that there could be a surge in acts of violence in case peace negotiations were not held, reports The News. “The Government committee does not appear to be serious in holding the talks,” he said, adding, ‘the violent acts may witness a surge in case the dialogue was not held’. “If the Government and Taliban committees remained at distance, it could lead to an increase in the acts of terror,” he cautioned. Separately, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on February 18 claimed that it is serious about peace talks with the Government, reports Dawn. TTP ‘spokesman’ Shahidullah Shahid said the Taliban leadership was in constant contact with all factions on the issue of ceasefire and a decision in this respect would be taken soon. He said all Taliban factions unanimously backed the dialogue process and there would be no problem in implementing TTP’s decisions, including the issue of ceasefire, claiming the TTP practised Sharia’h and any decision endorsed by the chief of the Tehreek was final and obligatory for all factions to abide by. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif chaired a meeting of the Government's committee formed to hold talks with negotiators representing the TTP, during which the committee expressed its inability to carry forward peace talks, reported Dawn. The committee said the talks could not progress without any solid steps and also asked the TTP to unconditionally cease all violent activities without any delay. According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister House, the Government committee briefed Nawaz Sharif and told him that during the 13-day process of talks several acts of violence took place killing a number of people. The committee further said that the talks were progressing satisfactorily until the Taliban-claimed blast was carried out in Karachi on February 13, 2014. Following these developments, the committee members had unanimously decided that holding the scheduled talks with the Taliban committee was a meaningless effort. Also, the Government mediators on February 18 demanded a ceasefire from the Taliban before they resumed peace talks as another two soldiers were killed in separate attacks, reports Daily Times

Special Court lawyers representing former President General (retired) Pervez Musharraf in the high-treason case on March 5 claimed that they have been threatened with beheading and have called for a new venue for the trial, reports The Express Tribune. Musharraf’s counsel Ahmed Raza Kasuri while presenting the threatening letter, allegedly sent by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), to the Special Court, said that the defence team feared for its safety and wanted the trial to be shifted to another location. “We cannot go ahead with this case in these conditions,” he said, before reading out aloud from the letter. The two-page handwritten letter, addressed to lawyers Kasuri, Sharifuddin Pirzada and Anwar Mansoor Khan, read: “Dear Sirs, we request that the three of you stop representing Musharraf otherwise we will destroy your children and behead all of you.” It accused Musharraf of handing over hundreds of Muslims to the United States, “earning billions of dollars and becoming the richest person in the world”. “You should stop representing him or be prepared for war…He is an infidel, hypocrite, and… he must be hanged,” the letter added. The letter was signed by the ‘people of South and North Waziristan’ but its authenticity could not be verified.

The Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) on March 13 confirmed the seriousness of the threats that former President General (retired) Pervez Musharraf’s lawyers claim he is facing, reports The Express Tribune. A representative of the ISI said that it had intercepted a phone call on the night of March 12, 2014, which confirmed that Musharraf was susceptible to attack. They cautioned that there was a clear and present danger from militants who were looking to target Musharraf’s convoy somewhere along the route between the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC) and the court’s premises. According to sources, “an official informed the judges about phone calls, reports and technical analysis which revealed that al Qaeda is planning to target Musharraf”.

Due to threats and intimidation, all private educational institutions have remained closed for the past eight days in Panjgur District on May 15, reports Dawn. Earlier on May 7, 2014, the private schools were shut down in the aftermath of threats by a newly surfaced militant outfit Tanzeem-ul-Islami-ul-Furqan (TIF). It had threatened to target private educational institutions, especially the English Learning Centers imparting co-education in Panjgur. “For the first time, we have heard about this militant organisation,” a Police Officer said on condition of anonymity. Haji Islam Baloch, a legislator from the ruling National Party, said that under a pre-planned conspiracy, children of Panjgur were being deprived of education. “They are destroying the future of our young generation,” Baloch lamented during the session of the Balochistan Assembly on May 14 2014. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in a threatening letter on December 19 warned the Federal Government that it will start eliminating children of politicians, including Sharif's family, and Army officers, if the Pakistan Government keeps its commitment to hang militants owing allegiance to the terror outfit, reports The Times of India. The letter was received by Pakistan authorities on December 19, 2014. Sources said that they were trying to verify if the letter was genuine. The letter justified the killing of young children saying the kids were committed to following in the footsteps of their parents. The letter says that if any incarcerated terrorist is killed, TTP will take revenge by killing more young children. "Let us make it clear to Pakistan establishment that if any of our associates is harmed, we will avenge ourselves by targeting your children. We would ensure that houses of army generals and political leaders become centers of mourning," said the letter. It further read, "Why the human rights organizations, which are not aware of the reasons of the attack on Army Public School, silent on this decision of the infidel Government. We, in light of Islamic teaching, consider the killing of the children of army personnel as justified as they are not opposing the anti-Islam role of their parents and are committed to follow the path of their parents. We are giving an open invitation of debate to religion leaders who are issuing decrees in favor of the Government."
