"It was a high powerful time device that was planted by unknown terrorists," an unnamed police official was quoted in The News. According to The News, a Karachi-bound passenger train escaped a disaster on January 24- night when a powerful bomb exploded minutes after the train passed the Sibi railway station in Balochistan province. Pakistan Railways officials said five Railways personnel were wounded when a railway trolley, which passed on the track dismantled by the blast, overturned. Separately, another bomb exploded in the ministers’ block of the Balochistan Civil Secretariat in the provincial capital Quetta without causing any damage. It was the second bomb explosion in the ministers’ block in a month. Earlier, a bomb exploded at a washroom of the ministers’ block on December 18, 2004.

A high-voltage power line and a rail track were damaged in the latest round of rocket and bomb attacks in the Balochistan province on January 27. According to Daily Times, a bomb exploded on a rail track near Sibi, a town about 160 kilometers southeast of provincial capital Quetta, destroying a three-foot portion of the track. In Rakhni, a town about 400 kilometers east of Quetta, rockets hit a high-voltage power line leaving thousands of people without electricity, said Jibraeel Khan, a Government official in the area. Meanwhile, police announced the arrests of three men for an armed ambush in August 2004 that killed five soldiers and their civilian driver in Khuzdar.

A telephone tower, an electric supply tower and a railway track were blown up on February 3 in continuing attacks on vital Government installations in the Balochistan province. According to The News, the telephone tower was hit in the Maiwand area of Kohlu district, where another landmine blast injured one Frontier Corps (FC) personnel, who was inspecting the site. And the electric tower was blown up in Nushki, while the railway track was damaged in Mastung district. Official sources said unidentified insurgents fired at least five rockets in Maiwand, one of which destroyed the telephone tower. While, the FC personnel were inspecting the site, a landmine exploded, injuring the FC personnel. In another incident, a powerful explosive device went off near a railway track at Killi Wali Khan in Mastung district, blowing up a piece of the track. However, no loss of life was reported. In Nushki district, the insurgents exploded a bomb blowing up a electric tower. The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for some of the attacks, Reuters reported.

The Lahore-bound Chiltan Express reportedly had a narrow escape when a powerful bomb went off near the Kot Chutta railway station on the Dera-Jacobabad section on February 3. The Pakistan Railways, according to Dawn, has been running pilot engines to save trains from disasters in the light of the ongoing insurgency in Balochistan province. The staff of the pilot engine informed railway officials after which Chiltan Express was stopped at Kot Chutta while the Karachi-bound Khushal express was stopped at the Dera railway station.

According to The News, the first explosion occurred around 3.15pm (PST), in the 22-Up Chiltan Express heading for Quetta from Lahore, when the train was ready to resume its journey from Mach railway station to Quetta. One passenger was killed and four others wounded in this blast. The second bomb explosion occurred in the Lahore-bound 21-Down Chiltan Express in the Mushkaf area near Sibi, approximately 120 kilometers off the provincial capital Quetta, killing one person and injuring five others.
