Taliban leader Maulvi Nazir was among 10 Taliban militants killed in a US-operated drone strike in the South Waziristan Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on January 3, reports Daily Times. The drone targeted the Taliban leader’s moving convoy. “Maulvi Nazir was on his way to Wana from Birmal when the convoy was hit in Sarkundi area (in Birmal tehsil), killing him and nine others,” officials sources said. Maulvi Nazir is the second top Taliban leader to be killed in a drone strike after Baitullah Mehsud, who was chief of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) when he was killed in 2009. Maulvi Nazir had ‘earned fame’ in spring 2007 when he led a successful uprising against foreign militants in Ahmedzai Wazir-held areas, ousting Uzbek militants along with their local supporters. He linked administration of polio vaccination to cessation of drone strikes and no polio drive could be launched in Ahmedzai Wazir areas since the ban in June 2012. Security agencies warned the Government of likely backlash from the supporters of Maulvi Nazir. “There may be backlash from a Taliban group and the federal government should direct all provincial capitals to increase vigilance against any threat,” security officials spoke on condition of anonymity. The Pentagon (US) welcomed reports that Maluvi Nazir was killed in a drone strike, saying his death would represent a “major development.” Pentagon spokesman George Little did not confirm the reports of the killing, but said, “If the reports are true, then this would be a significant blow, and would be very helpful not just to the United States but also to our Pakistani partners.” Dawn, however, reported that Nazir was killed along with his five guards when a missile hit his vehicle while he was going to Wana from Birmal on January 2. Maulvi Nazir’s key aide Rata Khan was among the other militants killed when the vehicle was attacked near Angoor Adda on the Afghan border, the official said. Nazir had survived a suicide bombing in November 29, 2012. The TTP, the umbrella organisation of Pakistani militant groups, denied its involvement, but Nazir, under pressure from the government, ordered the expulsion of Mehsud tribesmen from Wana. The TTP leadership comes from the Mehsud tribe. He had entered into a peace agreement with the government after his group expelled militants of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, led then by Tahir Uldashev, in 2007 from the area. Nazir’s fighters avoided attacking government and Security Forces’ installations in the tribal region and cooperated with the local administration, an official said. The military is believed to have struck a non-aggression pact with Nazir ahead of its 2009 operation against militants in South Waziristan. Nazir was understood to be close to the al Qaeda-linked Haqqani Network. Nazir had property in both Pakistan and Afghanistan. He earlier used to be a member of the Hizb-i-Islami, an Afghan militant group. Nazir’s group quickly appointed his close aide Bawal Khan as a replacement, according to one of his aides. But a Reuters report named the successor as Salahuddin Ayubi.

At least 17 persons, all believed to be suspected militants, were killed and eight others sustained injuries in three separate US drone attacks in the mountainous Babar area of Ladha subdivision in South Waziristan Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on January 6, reports The News. According to sources, the drones fired 10 missiles and hit three different compounds of militants located in the remote mountainous Babar area. The compounds were reportedly inhabited by the militants affiliated with Hakimullah Mehsud’s Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and cadres of the Punjabi TTP chapter leader Qari Imran. A cousin of the TTP ‘chief’ Hakimullah Mehsud, Wali Mohammad Toofan, was among the killed militants, adds Dawn. Toofan had been recently elevated to head TTP’s ‘Fidayee wing’ (Suicide wing) after its leader Qari Hussain died in a drone strike.

Abu Ubaidah Abdullah Al Adam, the ‘intelligence and internal security chief’ of the terrorist group, has was on April 17 in a drone attack in Datta Khel area of North Waziristan Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), The News reported on April 25. Even though al Qaeda has not yet issued an official ‘martyrdom’ statement about the death of Abu Ubaidah Al Adam, there are credible reports in the Western media to suggest that he was killed in an April 17 US drone attack. Two of his close aides - Al Wathiq Billah and Sanafi Al Nasr – have tweeted that Abu Ubaida has been killed in an American drone strike in Pakistan.A Palestinian national, who was in fact raised in Saudi Arabia, Al Adam had replaced Mohammad Khalil Hasan Al Hakaymah alias Abu Jehad Al Misri, the former ‘intelligence chief’ of the terrorist group, who was killed in a US drone strike on November 1, 2008, in NWA.

The second-in-command of the Haqqani Network, Mullah Sangeen Zadran (45), was among those killed in the September 6, 2013 United States (US) drone attack in North Waziristan Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA), reported The Express Tribune on September 7 (today). While talking to the media, a local security official confirmed Zadran was killed in the drone strike along with five other suspected militants. Seven others, he added, were injured in the attack. The official said those killed also included three suspected al Qaeda militants. Two of them were identified as Jordanian nationals while the third reportedly hailed from Egypt. The remaining two were local tribesmen, he added. According to locals, some of those killed and injured in the strike were Zadran’s bodyguards. Zadran, hailed from the Zadran tribe in Paktika province of Afghanistan. He was a popular leader among militants and played an influential role in bringing different banned outfits, including the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), al Qaeda and the Afghan Taliban, together. In August 2011, the US State Department added Zadran to its list of designated global terrorists. The militant commander had been blamed for a number of attacks on US and NATO forces in Afghanistan. Zadran also appeared in a video alongside US soldier Bowe Bergdahl, who was kidnapped by the Taliban in June 2009.

Hakimullah Mehsud, the ‘chief’ of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), was killed in a US drone strike in Dandy Darpakhel area, five kilometres (three miles) north of Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan Agency (NWA) in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on November 1, reports Dawn. Intelligence officials said Hakimullah was leaving from a meeting at a mosque in Dandy Darpakhel area when the drone targeted their vehicle. Five militants, including Abdullah Bahar Mehsud and Tariq Mehsud, both key militant commanders and close aides of the TTP chief, were also killed with two others injured in the drone strike, multiple sources confirmed. On November 2-morning (Today), Hakimullah Mehsud along with other militants killed in the drone strike, was buried in NWA, reports The News. Sources said that besides Hakimullah Mehsud, his uncle, driver and other aides buried at different places NWA. The Government has not yet confirmed the death of Hakimullah, reports The News. However, it has stopped the delegation from visiting NWA to hold peace talks following the reports of TTP chief's death. Strongly condemning the US drone attack in North Waziristan, Pakistan Government reiterated that these strikes are a violation of sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country. Foreign Office Spokesman Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry in a statement said that there was an across the board consensus in Pakistan that these drone strikes must end.According to the sources, TTP's Markazi majlis-e-Shoora (Central Advisory Committee) would appoint their new chief. The South Waziristan TTP chief, Khan Said Sajna alias Khalid is likely to succeed Hakimullah Mehsud as TTP chief. Chief of Mohmand Agency Umar Khalid Khurasani is also a strong contestant for the slot as he is the only surviving senior Taliban commander who had directly commanded operations under Hakimullah. Mullah Fazlullah, the chief of the Swat Taliban, is another senior TTP commander but unlikely to replace the assassinated TTP chief for not belonging to Mehsud clan. Jen Psaki, the spokesperson for the US State Department said that “We have seen those reports but we don’t have anything for you on that. The reports just came out. We have a close cooperative relationship with Pakistan on various issues, including counter-terrorism but I do not have anything specific for you on Pakistan on this report.” Reacting to US drone strike, Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan on November 1 demanded the Government to block NATO supplies going through the country, reports Dawn. Imran Khan further said that the US drone attack was as a conspiracy to sabotage talk’s effort. Earlier on October 31, Imran Khan issued a warning that his party will block the NATO supply line if the US made any drone strike to disrupt the talk’s process with the TTP. His party is set to table resolutions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly and National Assembly on November 4 in this regard. Earlier on November 1, the TTP said that they have had “no contact” with the Government, a day after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said a process to initiate peace talks had been started, reports The Express Tribune. The TTP ‘spokesperson’ Shahidullah Shahid said that there had been no overtures. “No one has yet contacted us. The Government is making announcements only by media, no peace talks have yet been started,” Shahid said. “The beginning of peace talks means sitting at a table and discussing issues, no such thing has yet happened.”
