At least 12 militants, including some foreigners, were killed on May 14 in a suspected United States missile strike on two houses in the Damadola area of Bajaur Agency in the FATA, Daily Times reported. Two missiles, apparently fired by a US drone aircraft, demolished a house and a compound used by suspected al Qaeda militants, an unnamed official told AFP. Residents said they saw drones flying in the area beforehand, AP reported. They said that Taliban militants cordoned off the site soon after the attack. Taliban spokesman Maulana Omar told Daily Times that ‘commander’ Maulana Obaidullah’s house had been targeted. He said most of the house’s residents, including women and children, were killed. He said the Taliban believed that the US army had initiated the attack to undermine peace efforts, adding, "We will avenge this but will continue talks with the Government." Separately, however, military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said that there was no army in the area and he had no knowledge of any missile strike. The missile attack is reported to have triggered a chain of explosions, apparently caused by a stockpile of explosives, according to Dawn. Several people are thought to have been injured, but not much information came out of the area since militants prevented local people from undertaking any rescue operation. This is the third missile strike by American planes on Damadola. 18 persons, including 14 members of one family, were killed when a residential compound was hit on January 13, 2006. It was hit again by a pilotless predator on October 30, 2006, killing 82 people, including many children.

A missile was fired at a house next to a mosque at village Sapalga in North Waziristan on June 2, almost completely destroying the building, The News reported. However, no loss of life or injuries was reported. Residents of the village, south of Miranshah, headquarters of North Waziristan, said they found fragments of metal from a missile believed to have been fired by a US drone aircraft in the middle of the night. "It happened at 12:30am. It was a US pilot-less plane that fired a missile while flying very low," Niamatullah Khan, a tribal elder told Reuters. Khan said the house had been empty and no one had been killed or wounded. Villagers said drones had been flying over the area for the past two days.

A missile apparently fired from a Predator drone killed at least six persons on July 28 in a compound in South Waziristan near the Afghan border, Dawn reported. An unnamed security official said the strike might have killed a senior al Qaeda trainer known for his expertise in explosives and chemicals. The official put the death toll at 12. "Our report suggests that the missile strike might have killed Abu Khabab Al Misri, an Egyptian. But it remains unconfirmed," the official said. A resident of Wana said two missiles struck a seminary and an adjoining compound in the Zyara Leetha area of Azam Warsak early in the morning, killing six people and wounding a woman and her two children. A local militant commander, Maulvi Nazir, said the strike killed left seven persons, including the head of a seminary and students. However, military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said "There is a problem at the local level. We have not received a detailed report. No one has been able to reach there and get details of the information. Therefore, I cannot really make a comment". The 55-year-old Midhat Mursi As-Sayid Umar alias Abu Khabab was earlier reported to have been killed in a US missile strike in the Damadola area of Bajaur Agency in the FATA in Jan 2006. However, later reports showed that he was not among those killed. He was a trainer at an al Qaeda facility in Darunta near Jalalabad in Afghanistan in the late 1990s. A graduate in science from an Egyptian university, Abu Khabab was considered to be an expert in conventional explosives and some western media reports said he headed a project named Al Zabadi, or ‘curdled milk’, for making chemical and biological weapons. The US had offered a $5 million reward on information leading to his capture.

12 militants, including three Turkmen, some Arabs and Waziri tribal fighters, were killed and several others injured when an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) fired four Hellfire missiles on Shnawana village in South Waziristan (SW), along the border with Afghanistan on August 12-night. Sources informed The News from Angoor Adda, a border town between the SW and Afghanistan's Paktika province, that two pilot-less US planes were seen flying over the area during the attack on the village. They said four missiles were fired on the village in which 12 suspected militants were killed and several others injured. A house of pro-government tribal militant commander Abdur Rahman was destroyed in the attack in which Rahman and his brother Mohammad Islam died. According to residents, two US planes were hovering over the area since August 12-evening in the run-up to the drone attack. The planes fired four Hellfire missiles at around 10 pm at the compound where local and foreign militants were reportedly hiding. In Kabul, the US military said the missiles were not fired by either NATO’s International Security Assistance Force or the US-led coalition. "This is not true. We have no reports of missiles being fired into Pakistan," US-led coalition spokesman Lieutenant Nathan Perry told AFP.

Six people, including two suspected Arab nationals and four Dawar tribal militants, were killed and four others injured in yet another missile strike by a US Predator on Achar Khel village near Miranshah in North Waziristan on September 4. Official and tribal sources told The News that a US spy plane was seen flying over the area during the aerial attack on the village. The plane, which had been hovering over the border tribal villages for the past several days, fired a Hellfire missile that razed to the ground the house of local tribesman Farman Dawar at Achar Khel. Sources close to tribal militants, led by Maulana Hafiz Gul Bahadur, said that two among the dead were identified as Arab guests who had come to Farman’s house, while the remaining four persons killed in the air strike were local Dawar tribesmen. They said four people injured in the missile attack were also Dawar tribesmen.

A United States missile strike on a compound used by militants in South Waziristan in FATA killed at least six people and wounded three others on September 17-evening, officials said, according to Daily Times. Two intelligence officials told Associated Press that missiles hit the compound used by Taliban and militant organisation Hizb-e-Islami. Also, a security official told AFP that dead included some foreigners whose nationalities were not immediately known. Another senior official told Reuters that the strike was the result of US and Pakistani intelligence sharing, adding a container of arms and ammunition was also destroyed. "It shows improving intelligence co-ordination on the ground," said the official. "Two missiles directly hit the compound while the other two fell in the surrounding area. There are a few militant training camps in the area and no civilian population around the site of the strike," AFP quoted another official as saying. He said the Baghar Cheena area, where the strike took place, was the stronghold of local Taliban commander Maulvi Nazeer. But it was not immediately clear whether he was in the area at the time of the strike. The attack came hours after US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Michael Mullen told Pakistani leaders that America respects Pakistan’s sovereignty, amid a mounting tension over cross-border strikes by the US.

Three out of seven people killed in September 17 US drone attack on the Baghar village of South Waziristan Agency included two Arabs, one of them a senior al-Qaeda commander, and one hailing from the Punjab Province. Sources close to the tribal militants told The News that the two Arabs were identified as Jiran, the al-Qaeda commander, and Sabri while the name of the militant commander from the Punjab could not be ascertained. An unnamed senior militant commander, said all the three men were sitting in a vehicle parked in front of a mud-built house in Baghar village near Angoor Adda when two US drones fired four Hellfire missiles, killing them and four others staying in the house. He said Jiran was appointed as al-Qaeda’s operational commander for a particular region in Afghanistan following the death of senior al-Qaeda commander Abu Imam while fighting the US forces near Bagram in Afghanistan three months ago. "Jiran was a senior operational commander and was mostly living in the border areas between Afghanistan and Pakistan. He used to change his locations due to continuous surveillance by the US spy planes on the border villages," said the tribal militant commander.

Daily Times reports that a suspected US drone fired two missiles on October 16 into South Waziristan, killing five people, including at least one foreigner, security officials said. "Two missiles were fired, completely destroying the house. Reports confirm five dead," an unnamed security official told AFP. There was no immediate confirmation of the strike from the Pakistani military or from the US-led coalition in neighbouring Afghanistan. Two Pakistani intelligence officials told the Associated Press that reports from informants and field agents suggested that one foreign member of the Taliban died in the attack and that another foreigner was injured. Asked if any Al Qaeda leaders had been hit, the officials said that while Arabs had been living in the house, the identities of the victims were not yet clear. They said the Taliban had frequented the house in a remote, forested area, since its owner fled the tribal region last year. Another intelligence agency official told Reuters five militants had been killed. "Guests were staying there," said a second official. The term is commonly used to refer to foreign militants. Witnesses told NNI the area is controlled by Pakistani Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud.

Suspected US drones fired missiles on October 23 into a madrassa (seminary) set up by veteran pro-Taliban commander, Jalaluddin Haqqani, killing eight people and wounding six others, near Miranshah in the North Waziristan Agency of FATA, security officials said, according to Daily Times. "At 2:25am, two spy drones fired three missiles at the madrassa of Mullah Mansoor," an unnamed security official said. "Eight militants were sleeping in the courtyard. All of them were killed. They were local militants," a villager standing at the scene of the strike told Reuters. Security officials said the Madrassa Sirajul Uloom – three kilometres from Miranshah near Danday Darpa Khel on the Miranshah-Afghanistan road – was set up by Haqqani during the 1980s ‘jihad’ against Soviet forces in Afghanistan. It was currently run by one of Haqqani’s commanders, Mullah Mansoor, and was recently used as a guesthouse for ‘international and local students travelling from other areas’, they told AFP. The earlier missile strike on September 8 targeting another house owned by Haqqani killed 23 people, including members of Haqqani’s extended family, security officials said.

One Arab, two Turkmen and a local militant were killed in the pre-dawn attack. Janikhel is adjacent to North Waziristan where drones often fly and hit targets. An AFP report added that a senior security official in provincial capital Peshawar said that a major Arab al Qaeda operative was among six militants killed in the overnight missile strike. Security sources identified the militant as Abdullah Azam Al-Saudi, a senior al Qaeda member who, they said, American intelligence officials had identified as the main link between al Qaeda’s senior command and Taliban networks in the Pakistani border region. "He was the man coordinating between Al Qaeda and Taliban commanders on this side of the border, and also involved in recruiting and training fighters," an unnamed official said.

British terror suspect Rashid Rauf was among the five people killed in a US drone attack in North Waziristan on November 22, officials and intelligence sources said. “We have got him, but dead,” an unnamed senior intelligence official confided to Daily Times in Peshawar while referring to Rashid Rauf, the suspected mastermind of a 2006 plot to blow up trans-Atlantic airliners who was arrested in August 2006 and escaped from police custody in December 2007. “We are investigating at the moment, but we do not have any information,” a British Foreign Office spokesman said about Rauf’s reported death. The government has not confirmed his killing. A Western diplomatic source told AFP the missile was fired from a jet across the border in Afghanistan. Peshawar-based intelligence officials said another al Qaeda militant Abu Zubair Al Masri was also among the dead, adding, “He is a low-ranking Al Qaeda leader.”
