Terrorists targeted the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) at Kamra in the Punjab province on January 17-morning, firing four rockets at short intervals, Dawn reported. One of rockets landed on the roof of the senior non-commissioned officers’ mess and two others hit airmen’s residences inside the Mirage Rebuilt Factory. The fourth rocket exploded in a field near the Qutba village, close to the Kamra Cantonment. However, no casualty was reported. District Police Officer Tariq Hanif Joya said the rockets had been fired from a place about five to eight kilometers north of the cantonment. He said that security agencies were looking for assailants in the nearby villages, including Jatyal, Samah and Nullah Chail. This is reportedly the second incident of terrorism targeting the Kamra cantonment in a little more than a month. On December 10, 2007, seven people, including four children, were injured when a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden car into a PAC school vehicle outside the Kamra facility.

A suicide bomber killed eight people, including the Pakistan Army’s surgeon general, in Rawalpindi on February 25 - the highest-ranking military official killed since the country joined the US-led war on terror, according to Daily Times. Lieutenant General Mushtaq Baig, surgeon general and Director-General of the army’s Medical Services, died after a teenage suicide bomber blew himself up next to a military convoy on a busy road in Rawalpindi, the army said. "The surgeon general, his driver and guard were martyred," military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas told reporters. Five civilians were also killed, while 25 others were injured, an army statement added. "This was the first suicide attack in Pakistan in which a high-ranking military official has been killed since 9/11 and also the first attack after the election," AFP quoted Abbas as saying. According to eyewitnesses, Baig’s car had stopped at a traffic signal on Mall Road when the suicide bomber exploded himself — killing the general, two of his staff and five civilians standing in front of a nearby NADRA office.

Eight persons were killed and 24 others sustained injuries when two suicide bombers blew themselves up in the parking area of the Pakistan Navy War College in Lahore on March 4, according to The News. The incident occurred at around 1:10 pm (PST) when classes in the Pakistan Navy War College were in progress. Eyewitnesses and police officials said five Navy officials and two suicide bombers died on the spot while one Navy official succumbed to injuries at a hospital. The incident occurred when a suicide bomber, riding a motorcycle, rammed into the college gate and blew himself up while making way for his accomplice to the parking lot, which was packed with official vehicles. The second suicide bomber, who was standing at some distance from the gate, rushed to the parking lot and triggered his explosive device. Capital City Police Officer Malik Iqbal said that two suicide bombers had exploded themselves up at the entrance of the college parking lot. He disclosed that the first blast was of low intensity while the other was quite powerful, which caused major destruction. According to Daily Times, the second explosion caused four cars and two buses in the parking lot to catch fire, causing a third explosion at around 1.11pm. A fourth blast was also reported but it could not be confirmed.

At least 30 people were killed and more than 200 sustained injuries in suicide blasts at the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) headquarters and an advertising agency office in Lahore on March 11-morning, Daily Times reported. The first attack was carried out at the FIA regional headquarters on Temple Road, severely damaging the eight-storey establishment and adjacent buildings. The building also housed the offices of a special US-trained unit created to counter terrorism. The suicide bombers on a pick-up rammed through the gate of the building, running over a policeman before blowing up the vehicle, according to Dawn. The second attack was carried out on Bungalow No 83/F in Model Town – the office of an advertising agency. Two children and a gardener died in the bombing and about 12 people were injured. The advertising agency is located near Bilawal House, office of the Pakistan People’s Party. Capital City Police Officer Malik Muhammad Iqbal said attackers rammed explosives-laden vehicles into the targets in both the attacks. Police said around 50kg and 30kg of explosives had been used in the two attacks. Sources said police arrested 27 suspects from Lahore, Gujranwala, Sargodha and Okara on March 11-evening. 15 of them were detained during raids in the Awan Town, Shahdara, Misri Shah and Bilal Gunj in Lahore. Police also seized a large quantity of explosives in the raids.

Two suicide bombers blew themselves up on August 21 at the gates of the Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) in the high security cantonment town of Wah in Rawalpindi District of Punjab, killing at least 70 persons in what was described as the deadliest attack on a military installation in the country’s history, Dawn reported. The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the attack. The POF at Wah is a cluster of about 20 industrial units producing artillery, tank and anti-aircraft ammunition for the Pakistani armed forces, according to Daily Times. It employs around 25,000 to 30,000 workers. The bombers blew themselves up outside two gates of the factory at 2.35pm (PST) when hundreds of workers were leaving after a shift change. Most of the victims were civilian workers. The first explosion occurred outside the main gate and it was followed by an equally powerful blast at gate No.1 located close to a busy market. Witnesses said the bombers were on foot and they exploded themselves within a minute of each other. The death toll could increase as 35 of the injured were in critical condition, hospital sources said. Security force personnel found a ‘suicide vest’ in the toilet of a nearby mosque and arrested a suspected suicide bomber, Hameedullah of Khyber Agency, from the Mall Road. According to sources, police arrested three suspects. One of them was said to be "covering up" the suicide bombers. A belt filled with explosives was also found in a mosque, the sources said. Taliban spokesman Maulvi Omar claimed responsibility of the suicide attacks saying that they had been carried out in retaliation for military operations in Bajaur and Swat. Talking to Dawn, he warned that such attacks would also be carried out in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Mardan, Bannu, Kohat and Swat.

At least three people, including a teenager, were injured in a series of three explosions near the Alhamra Cultural Complex in Lahore, where the international World Performing Arts Festival was in progress, on November 22, reported Daily Times. Police said at least one of the explosions at 10:02pm (PST) might be of a timed device planted in the cafeteria in the basement of the adjacent Punjab Institute of Language, Art and Culture. Rescuers said police and officials were trying to locate the bombing site when another explosion occurred less than 15 minutes later, injuring two workers. Another 15 minutes later, a third explosion took place outside the Alhamra Cultural Complex gate, injuring a 13-year-old boy. Police managed to find two explosion sites, including one in the Punjab Institute of Language, Art and Culture where they said a timed device was planted in the sanitation system. Online said the crew of a private TV channel who were recording the festival was injured in the explosion, but the report could not be confirmed.

A woman, identified as Farzana Bibi, was killed and five other people injured as a mini-truck packed with explosives blew up in GOR-II area of Lahore in the morning of December 24, police officials said, according to Daily Times. The windows of nearby houses were shattered, while several walls collapsed. A transformer also exploded. Superintendent of Police Umar Virk said a mini-cabin with about 10-kilogrmas of explosives blew up on the road. Forensic experts said the explosives were detonated by remote or a timer device. The vehicle was completely destroyed. Police said the vehicle, belonging to the Fisheries Department, was stolen on November 19. AP quoted Virk as saying the target of the Lahore blast was likely a police officer who had headed an operation that led to the death of a leader of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) in 2002, and lived nearby.
