Security Forces (SFs) arrested five suspects believed to be involved in the May 8 Data Darbar blast during a raid in the night of May 9 in GarhiShahu area of Lahore, the provincial capital of Punjab, reports The Express Tribune. The suspects were picked up after tracing the bomber. Officials said one of the detainees was a rickshaw driver who transported the suicide bomber to Data Darbar. According to officials, investigators have pieced together CCTV footage from across the city to determine the movement of the attacker. Through the clips, the investigators learnt about a tea stall which had opened in the GarhiShahu area about three months ago and was frequented by the attacker. Other footage showed the attacker getting into a rickshaw that took him to the Data Darbar via the railway station, officials revealed.

The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) of Punjab and Intelligence Bureau (IB) on May 20 arrested the “facilitator” of Data Darbar suicide bomber from Lahore, the provincial capital of Punjab, reports Dawn. A senior official who is part of the joint operation said that law enforcement agencies arrested Mohsin Khan, son of Behram Khan, who belongs to Shabqadar area in Charsadda District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). Mohsin told investigators that TayyabullahaliasRaaki, a resident of Mohmand District in KP, had received suicide bomber SadiqullahMomand, an Afghan national who entered Pakistan through Torkham on May 6, and escorted him to Lahore for the May 8 Data Darbar strike. The facilitator (Mohsin), handler and the suicide bomber stayed in a house in Bhati Gate area before hitting the target. The official said they had links with Hizbul Ahrar, a splinter group of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which had also claimed the responsibility of the attack.

Lahore Police are extensively engaging different stakeholders to devise a comprehensive plan to ensure security during Muharram, especially at a time when severe threats are looming large, The Express Tribune reports on August 24. The force is also conducting internal police conferences and mock exercises to gear up for all eventualities. As part of the plan, Lahore Police took Peace Committee Members on board. Two days ago, the Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) presided over a meeting held at Police Lines Qila Gujjar Singh. Committees and delegations from different sections of society were present and the purpose of the engagement was to ask them play an active role in maintaining interfaith harmony and reviving active communication. Superintendent of Police (SP) Security Muhammad Naveed said the police have reinforced the pickets at entry and exit points of the city. He added the force also had a plan to improve and enhance picketing in areas close to the main processions. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ashfaq Ahmad said that on-ground security plan was four-layered. This translates into each participant have to go through checking at four various points before being allowed to enter the gathering.

After Pakistan’s Punjab Governor announced that a settlement has been reached on the incident of alleged forced conversion of a Sikh woman in Nankana Sahib near Lahore, representatives of Sikh organisations in India believe that the neighbouring country was involved in propaganda to instigate the Sikh community for its own benefit, reports First Post on September 4. Gurdeep Singh, chairman of DaswandSewa Society (a Ludhiana-based Sikh NGO), stated that Pakistan, through sustained propaganda, is trying to instigate Sikhs against India. He highlighted that the population of Sikhs in Pakistan has fallen sharply over the past few years. He added that Pakistan had no intention of reuniting the victim with her family and did it only under pressure. India's central intelligence agencies have expressed concerns about the Inter-Services Intelligence’s (ISI) association with pro-Khalistan elements. According to reports, these separatist elements are trying to radicalise Sikh youth in the Indian state of Punjab through sustained campaigns on social media run from countries like Canada, United Kingdom (UK) and Germany. Khalistani supporters have also organised rallies against India in connivance with the ISI in the UK. The recent case of Jagjit Kaur hasn’t gone down well with Sikhs across the world, who earlier believed that Pakistan was making genuine efforts to reach out to minorities by agreeing to construct the Kartarpur corridor. However, the recent case has now infuriated the Sikhs who say that Pakistan cannot be trusted.

An antiterrorism court (ATC) in Lahore on November 30, announced to indict on December 7 proscribed Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed and other JuD leaders who were booked in July for offences pertaining to terror financing, reports Daily Times. Hafiz Saeed, deputy emir Hafiz Abdul Rehman Makki, Hafiz Abdul Salam bin Mohammad, Professor Zafar Iqbal, Mohammad Ashraf, Yahya Aziz, and others were presented before the court on November 30 under strict security. The court was provided copies of nearly two dozen cases registered against the JuD leaders during the hearing which was presided over by Judge Malik Arshad Bhutta, according to Deputy Prosecutor General Abdul Rauf Watoo. “As per law, after the provision of copies to the court, the trial begins. The first step of a trial is indictment,” explained Watoo. The state’s counsel requested the court to hold daily hearings since the copies had been provided. At this, the lawyers for the JuD leaders, Naseeruddin Nayyar and Imran Gul, argued that they be given a week’s time so that they can carefully examine the documents and prepare their arguments. When the state counsel pressed for daily hearings nonetheless, Judge Bhutta said, “The law binds us to hold a fair trial with properly prepared arguments. That’s why everyone should be given time.” With this, he adjourned the trial till December 7.

Jammat-ud-Dawa (JuD) ‘chief’ and founder of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) Hafiz Saeed, the alleged mastermind of 2008 attacks in Mumbai, pleaded not guilty on December 20 in a second case on charges of financing terrorism, reports Daily Times. Saeed, who was indicted on similar charges in another case on December 11, was presented in an anti-terrorism court in Lahore, prosecutor Abdur Rauf Watto said. Defence lawyer Imran Gill said the second case was related to Hafiz Saeed’s charity operations. “The charities the accused ran collected illegal funds,” Watto said. The counterterrorism department had arrested Hafiz Saeed in July, days before a visit to Washington by Prime Minister Imran Khan. The indictments came ahead of a meeting of world financial watchdog Financial Action Task Force (FATF) early next year that will decide whether to blacklist Pakistan for its failure to curb terror financing.
