Five students received minor injuries slightly when an explosive device went off at University of Peshawar (UoP) in Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on January 2, reports Dawn. About one kilogram of explosives were used in the blast occurred in the conference hall of Institute of Islamic and Arabic Studies, UoP, Campus Police Station House Officer (SHO) Saidullah Afirdi said. The blast created panic at UoP as students staged a protest demonstration after the incident, alleging that the campus had become unsafe. The protesting students also demanded suspension of officials at Campus Police Station for their failure to protect students. However, UoP spokesperson claimed that nobody was injured in the blast as the conference hall was empty at the time of explosion. He said that the blast caused damage to the furniture, doors and windows of the hall and a nearby computer laboratory.

Police officials in the area said the militants bombed the school by placing explosives at the building of the Government High School Mashokhel located the jurisdiction of the Badaber Police Station. Four explosions destroyed the under-construction District Jail in Rehmanabad area of Hangu (Hangu District). Talking to reporters, District Police Officer (DPO) Mian Saeed Ahmed said that militants had placed explosives inside the under-construction jail building in Rehmanabad and triggered the explosions around midnight. The bomb disposal unit (BDU) officials said that 35 kilograms of explosives had been used in the four blasts. “Two barracks and a room of the jail were razed to the ground due to the powerful explosion,” he said. However, independent sources said that two barracks and five rooms were destroyed in the four blasts. ‘Spokesman’ for the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Darra Adamkhel chapter, Muhammad, claimed responsibility for blowing up the under-construction prison.

Two persons were killed and another was injured in a bomb explosion in Badhaber area on the outskirts of Peshawar (Peshawar District), the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on January 4, reports The Express Tribune. A local cricketer Ijaz Khan along with his friend Aman was returning from the playground after a match when they were hit by the powerful bomb. Police said that a bomb had been planted along an electricity pylon in Gul Khan Forest area of Badhaber. The explosion also damaged the electricity pylon suspending electricity supply to the area. A rocket had landed in the same Gul Khan area earlier in the day, but did not cause any damage.

An explosive device went off near the hujra (guest house) of an official of a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in Arakh area of Razar tehsil (revenue unit) in Swabi District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on January 6, reports The News. The sources said that unidentified persons had planted two bombs near the main gate of the hujra of Fazal Muhammad in Arakh area and triggered the explosion. The blast damaged the main gate and boundary walls of the structure but didn’t cause any casualty. The sources added the personnel of the bomb disposal unit (BDU) recovered a second bomb and defused it.

The officials of the bomb disposal unit (BDU) confirmed that it was a suicide attack. “We have recovered the head and legs of the suicide bomber from the spot. Also, a mechanical trigger was recovered from there,” Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of the BDU Shafqat Malik said. He added that around six kilograms of explosives along with pellets were used in the blast to cause more casualties. Hangu has a mixed population of Sunnis and Shias and there has been occasional sectarian strife in the city and also Hangu District. A Policeman and three civilians were killed and 49 persons, including a woman additional district and sessions judge, were injured in a suicide attack in a judicial complex in Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on March 18, reports Dawn. “Two suicide bombers entered the complex and one of them blew himself up in the courtroom of Additional District and Sessions Judge Kalsoom Zaman while the second was gunned down by police,” Capital City Police Officer Imtiaz Altaf said. He said Police had challenged the bombers at the entrance of the complex, leading to an encounter. Three policemen, including an inspector, suffered injuries. “There were two attackers and both of them were killed,” he added. An official of the bomb disposal unit said that each of the suicide vests contained 8 to 10 kilogrammes of explosives and ball-bearings. The motive of the attack could not be ascertained, but Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ‘spokesman’ Ehsanullah Ehsan said it was in revenge “for the failure of the country’s judiciary to defend jailed Pakistani scientist Dr Aafia Siddiqui” in the US, reports Daily Times. Two officials of Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS), identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Alamgir Shah and constable Mohammad Junaid were killed when they were trying to defuse an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Jamalabad locality of Swabi District, reports Dawn. The explosive device was planted outside the main gate of a Government school for boys. The local people informed Police about presence of the devices outside the buildings of three schools including Government middle school for boys, Government primary school for boys and Government middle school for girls in Jamalabad. The BDS squad was defusing the first device outside the middle school for boys when it exploded, killing two members of the squad,” said an officer. The sources said unidentified persons had fitted explosives to a motorcycle and parked it outside a mosque in Kacha Pakka, which is close to the boundary of the Orakzai Agency in FATA and is mostly inhabited by the Shias. The blast was aimed at targeting Malik Najaf Ali and Malik Badshah Ali from Orakzai Agency, but they were not present in the mosque, adds Dawn. The militants carried out 25 explosions during the course of the attack. 247 inmates managed to escape during the attack. Later, curfew was imposed in the area as a search operation was launched to arrest the escaped prisoners. TTP ‘spokesman’ Shahidullah Shahid claiming responsibility for the attack said that around 100 militants, including a number of suicide bombers, took part in the attack. He said the TTP has achieved its targets and their operation was successful. According to details, the prison houses TTP militants and militants from other sectarian outfits. Intelligence reports suggest that there were at least 45 high profile militants in the jail but there is no official confirmation about the exact number. An intelligence official, on condition of anonymity, said that the militants were shouting ''God is great'' and ''Long live the Taliban.''

A special meeting of the KP cabinet, headed by Chief Minister Pervez Khattak, approved the establishment of an anti-terrorism task force which will be led by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and comprise members of all law enforcement and intelligence agencies including Army, Frontier Corps and Frontier Constabulary. The cabinet has also demanded of the federal Government to return the Frontier Constabulary's platoons back to the province so that they can be deployed at sensitive places for controlling law and order and fighting terrorism. The cabinet in another decision called upon the Federal Government to pace up the peace talks process as KP is facing the brunt of terrorist attacks.

The victim lived close to the Police Station and got caught in the crossfire. Bannu Headquarters Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sanaullah Khan Marwat said that over a dozen militants attacked the Police Station from three sides at midnight. “At first they fired rockets and then opened fire with assault rifles,” he added. According to the DSP, the shoot-out between police and militants continued for nearly 90 minutes. The DSP added Police officials inside the station requested assistance, following which the Frontier Constabulary (FC) arrived and open retaliatory fire, forcing the assailants to flee. “Zaman got caught in the crossfire and was severely injured. He succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital,” DSP Marwat informed reporters.
