At least 18 people, mostly women and children, were killed and several others injured as suspected US planes fired missiles targeting three houses some 40 kilometers inside the Pakistani territory in Bajaur Agency of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) in the early hours of January 13. Eyewitnesses told The News from Mamund, the targeted area, that four to five planes took part in the bombing of Damdola village destroying houses of Bacha Khan, Bashir and Gul Zaman. According to locals, eight children and four women are among the dead. Haroon Rashid, Member of National Assembly from Bajaur, informed that American planes started targeting Damdola at about 3:00 am. "Damdola is adjacent to my village and we saw the planes and heard the deafening sound of explosions very clearly," said Rashid, adding that the bombardment by the planes came after a drone made several sorties to the area.

It was not immediately clear whether security forces or suspected terrorists were responsible for the man’s death. More than 1,000 people from Sarbandki and two adjacent villages staged a protest against the latest killing, and blocked a main road linking Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan, and Bannu, a city in the east.

At least 31 people were killed and 50 others wounded in a suspected suicide attack on a Muharram procession of Shia Muslims in the Hangu town of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on February 9. A series of explosions occurred through the procession in the main bazaar of Hangu town, some 200 kilometers northwest of Islamabad, between 9.30 am and 9.40 am local time. PTV reported that at least 23 people were killed and 50 injured in the three bomb explosions. Four people died when gunmen fired on a minibus in Saidan Banda near Hangu and four truck drivers were shot dead after a mob torched their vehicles in the nearby Ibrahimzai area, according to Dawn. In the ensuing riots, angry worshippers set ablaze shops and vehicles prompting authorities to impose curfew. NWFP Chief Minister Akram Durrani said a preliminary investigation showed the attack was a suicide bombing.

Police said the bomber was from the Pishtakhara village in the outskirts of Peshawar Cantonment. He was identified by the national identity card he was carrying. Ali informed that platoon commander Ahmad Khan attempted to remove the explosives fixed around the suspect’s body when he exploded. Extremists had earlier sent letters to several middle and high schools, threatening the schools’ managements to expel girls after they passed class IV, otherwise they would destroy the building and kill the principal. An official said on December 26 that the blast, sixth in a row against girls’ schools and video markets during the past four months, was the handiwork of the local Taliban. The blast, which occurred at 12:45am, completely destroyed three rooms in the school building. Haji Mumtaz Khan, a relative of the school owner, said that people were terrified and traders had closed down CD shops after two markets were attacked by the local Taliban.
