Rehman Malik said that 1,579 people were killed in 2008-09 while another 1,590 lost their lives in 2009-10. There were 1,157 acts of terrorism during 2008-09 and 1,331 incidents of terror during 2009-10. The rest of the incidents occurred 2011 year. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province bore the brunt of suicide attacks, which killed 1,524 people in the region. Punjab recorded 605 deaths, Sindh 134, Islamabad 125 and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir 11. The reply did not give the figures for Balochistan province and the. Malik said 360 people allegedly involved in bomb attacks were arrested since 2008. A total of 222 of these suspects were acquitted by courts, including 172 in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, 36 in Punjab and 14 in Islamabad. In response to another question, Malik said the Government had banned four outfits including Lashkar-e-Islam, Ansar-ul-Islam, the Haji Namdar group and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan’s Punjab chapter in June and August 2008

A US senator, Robert Casey, visiting Islamabad said on August 26 he was pressing Pakistan to reduce the flow of an explosives material used in roadside bombs that wound and kill hundreds of US soldiers in Afghanistan, reports Daily Times. Senator Robert Casey said in a press conference that his talks with civilian and military leaders as well as senators focused on having Pakistan implement its strategy to cut shipments of ammonium nitrate or fertiliser. “I want to see their strategy implemented, and then we’ll be able to better assess it. But they have not implemented a strategy yet, and... that’s one of the reasons I’m over here,” Casey said. But he added “I think we made real progress impressing upon the Pakistani leadership our sense of urgency to get results on this strategy to reduce the flow of ammonium nitrate into Afghanistan.” Casey, chairman of the Senate sub-committee on Near Eastern and South and Central Asian Affairs, said last year 368 US servicemen and women were injured or killed by the bombs, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Some 125 Americans have been killed this year by IEDs, he added. “It is very, very rare that someone who is killed in action is not killed by an IED,” he said.

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on September 8 remark that “all the political parties have formed armed groups and the current situation is very critical”, reports Daily Times. The Supreme Court was hearing the suo motu case regarding the target killings and violence in Karachi. The CJP further said, “If the criminal factor is eliminated from political parties, a peaceful atmosphere can be restored across Sindh, especially in Karachi.” It is the responsibility of the citizens to maintain law and order in the city, he said. All political parties were works for increasing their power only, he said.

United States (US) Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on October 11 said that the US is waging 'war' in Pakistan against militants, The News reports. Speaking at the Woodrow Wilson Centre in Washington, the former Central Investigation Agency (CIA) Director pointed to a "complicated relationship" between Washington and Islamabad. "And admittedly, there are a lot of reasons for that. We are fighting a war in their country," Panetta said, adding, "They have in fact given us cooperation in the operations of trying to confront al Qaeda in tribal areas and they continue to work with us." The two countries had sharp disagreements over "the relations they maintain with some of the militant groups in that country," added Panetta.

Pakistan has a huge stake in the outcome of the Afghan conflict, United States (US) Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on October 12, underscoring that the US could not dispense with its relationship with Islamabad, which must be part of the Afghan solution, reported Daily Times. “Everybody knows Pakistan has a big stake in the outcome of what goes on across their border, and they are going to be involved one way or the other,” Clinton said, adding, “This is a very difficult relationship, but I believe strongly that it is not one we can walk away from and expect that anything will turn out better, because I don’t believe that will be the case.” “Therefore, we are deeply engaged in finding ways to enhance cooperation with Pakistan and to further the Afghan desire for a legitimate peace and reconciliation process,” she added, Clinton remarked that Washington continued to push forward on expectations it had from Pakistan. “Pakistan has to be part of the solution, or it will continue to be part of the problem. And therefore, as frustrating as it is, we just keep every day going at it, and I think we make very slow, sometimes barely discernible progress, but we’re moving in the right direction”, Clinton acknowledged.

Islamabad on October 17 said that Afghan and US-led forces had failed to hunt down Maulvi Fazlulla, a Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) cleric responsible for a spate of cross-border raids despite repeated requests from Islamabad, reports Daily Times. Pakistani officials have urged the US to focus on defeating its enemies in Afghanistan instead of blaming Islamabad for its failures. “We have given locations and information about these groups to the Afghanistan Government and ISAF [International Security Assistance Force], but there has been no action,” Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General, Major-General Athar Abbas said. Fazlullah was the TTP leader in Swat Valley of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, about 160 kilometers northwest of Islamabad before a 2009 army offensive forced him to flee. Also known as FM Mullah for his fiery radio broadcasts, he regrouped in Afghanistan and established strongholds, and poses a threat to Pakistan once again, said Abbas. Fazlullah, a leading figure in the TTP is based in Kunar and Nuristan provinces of Afghanistan, said Abbas. “When they ran away from Swat, Fazlullah’s group was in tatters and was scattered,” Abbas said, adding, “They got time and support in Afghanistan.” However, Mansur Khan Mehsud of Islamabad’s FATA Research Centre doubts Fazlullah could take control of Swat or other areas. “While Fazlullah has the support of Afghan Taliban in the Kunar and Nuristan provinces, he has the capacity to only launch hit-and-run attacks,” Mehsud said.

The United States (US) military briefed Pakistan's Army chief General Ashfaq Kayani on its investigation into NATO air strikes on Mohammad check post on November 26, reports The News. A report by military investigators was delivered to General Ashfaq Kayani on December 25 by a US officer based in Islamabad, who explained the findings to the General, Pentagon spokesman Captain John Kirby told reporters. The full report from the joint US-NATO investigative team was not released publicly until on December 26 to allow time for the Pakistani leadership to read the findings first, Kirby said. "We wanted General Kayani to be able to see the entire thing," he said. The approach represented "an appropriate professional courtesy" to Kayani, he added.
