Eyewitness sources said that a suicide bomber, after parking his explosives-laden double cabin pickup in the middle of a ground, blew himself up while meeting the LI’s ‘deputy chief’ for the area. But another source said the bomber only detonated explosives strapped to his body as LI members and locals prepared for midday prayers at Darss Mosque, controlled by the LI. AFP quoted a regional official as saying that attack was carried out with around 80 people gathering around “the mosque, a cattle market and bazaar”. The source said that around 40 kilogrammes of explosives were used in the attack. Sources in Tirah valley confirmed that the LI ‘deputy chief’ for the area, identified as Azam Khan, was among the dead. An intelligence official told AFP, “We have confirmed reports that militant commander Azam Khan was also killed in the blast.”

26 persons, including a former member of the National Assembly (NA) were killed and 40 others injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up inside a mosque in Wana town of South Waziristan in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) at 3 pm (PST) on August 23, reports Daily Times. Pro-Government cleric Maulana Noor Muhammad was delivering a sermon in the area’s biggest mosque when the attack occurred. “Maulvi Noor Muhammad was among the 26 killed in the suicide attack inside his madrassa adjacent to his mosque,” Wana assistant political agent, Jamal Azmat said. No outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. However, ‘foreign elements’ who were earlier forced out of the area are believed to be behind the attack. Maulana Noor Muhammad was opposed to the presence of Uzbek militants and had provided support to dislodge them. Slain Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) leader Baitullah Mehsud had allowed the “displaced Uzbek militants” to stay in Mehsud areas, which triggered a strong reaction from the tribesmen from the Ahmedzai Wazir areas. The former MNA had also played his role in brokering a peace deal in the past. The cleric was associated with the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (Fazlur Rehman fraction).

At least 40 persons, including tribal elders, Security Force personnel and journalists were killed and another 70 injured on December 6 in twin suicide bombings on a jirga (Tribal council) being held outside the office of the assistant political agent of Mohmand Agency at Ghalanai, the headquarters of Mohmand Agency, in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), reports Daily Times. Among the dead were 12 Government officials and two television journalists –Pervez Khan and Abdul Wahab. Political Agent Zabit Khan is among the injured. According to Mohmand Political Agent Shamsul Islam, a jirga of a peace committee of Alizai and Safi tribes was in progress at the office of Roshan Khan Mehsud to devise a strategy against terrorism in the tribal region when two suicide bombers tried to enter into the premises, but blew themselves up when stopped by security personnel. The ‘chief’ of the Mohmand chapter of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Umer Khalid, claimed responsibility for the attack. “Our two suicide bombers targeted people who were working against the Taliban,” Umer Khalid told AFP by telephone from an unknown location. “Those who will work against us and make lashkars (tribal army) or peace committees will be targeted. Our war is to enforce Sharia and anyone who hinders our way or sides with America will meet the same fate,” Khalid added.

The dead included six Levies Force personnel. A number of Levies personnel were among the injured. According to officials, most of the victims belonged to the Salarzai tribe, which had raised a lashkar against militants in Bajaur.
