According to The News, the paramilitary Frontier Corps (FC) personnel claimed on January 15 that two alleged teenage suicide bombers were killed while a third committed suicide by swallowing poisonous capsules in the Mohmand Agency of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). An unnamed official stated that the three alleged young suicide bombers were on their way to Ghalanai, Mohmand Agency’s regional headquarters, in a Land Cruiser from the Pakistan-Afghanistan border areas. He said the FC soldiers deployed at the Khapakh Post on the Pakistan-Afghanistan highway - about six kilometers west of Ghalanai - stopped the vehicle and asked the three boys to disembark for a body search. According to him, one of the boys alighted and another remained inside while the third attempted to escape. The official said the soldiers immediately opened fire and shot him dead. He was identified as Nadir Khan, a resident of Swabi district in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP). However, the alleged suicide bomber before his death exploded the vehicle through a remote control device, killing another 13-year old boy, who was inside the vehicle. The soldiers reportedly took the third suicide bomber into custody and brought him to Ghalanai. However, the boy, suspected to be from Waziristan, swallowed poisonous capsules and subsequently died.

Meanwhile, the local administration sources said that 19 people including nine Frontier Corps soldiers died in the attack. They said a number of Khasadars (tribal policemen) and civilians were also killed. Security forces fired artillery shells at several hilltops after the attack, they added.

At least 10 people were killed and 13 others sustained injuries when a teenaged suicide bomber blew himself up amidst a gathering of the Awami National Party (ANP) and tribal Lashkar (force) at Mirali in North Waziristan on February 11, The News reported. President of the North Waziristan chapter of the ANP, Haji Anwar Shah, was among the dead. Witnesses told The News from Mirali, the second biggest town after the regional headquarters Miramshah, that a suicide bomber blew himself up when the party workers reached Eedak village where armed men of the tribal Lashkar were manning a checkpoint set up on the main Bannu-Miramshah road to search vehicles carrying goods to Afghanistan. The attacker was reported to be travelling with the ANP activists from Tappi to Mirali where they had gone as part of their election campaign. The tribal Lashkar was recently raised by the Dawar tribes-people to evict foreign militants from their area, which according to them, provoked military operations by the Pakistani security forces and caused them multiple hardships.

A suicide bomber blew himself up in a madrassa (seminary) in the Khyber Agency of FATA on May 1 injuring at least 18 people in an apparent attempt to assassinate the head of a religio-militant organisation. "I was the target," Haji Namdar, chief of the Amar Bil Maroof Wa Nahi Anil Munkar (Promotion of Virtue and Suppression of Vice) organisation, told Daily Times. Namdar escaped unhurt in the attack. The suicide bomber, aged between 15 and 18, blew himself up as he approached Namdar at the madrassa in Takya. An eyewitness, Amin Khan, said the attacker struck after Namdar had finished a sermon and appealed for donations for jihad, AP reported. "Half of the [suicide] jacket did not explode; otherwise there would have been many casualties," Tariq Hayat, administrator of the Khyber tribal region, told Dawn. Namdar later said he was not opposed to suicide bombings targeting "Islam’s enemy", but was opposed to attacks on fellow Muslims. He also said the attack could be a "reaction" to his group’s action against people who attempted to abduct the Mahsud Scouts troops in Kambarkhel earlier in the week. "We expelled those people... and the same people could be involved in the attack," claimed Namdar. Munsif Ali Khan, a spokesman for the group, told Dawn that the bomber appeared to be from outside Khyber Agency. He blamed Hakimullah, an associate of Baitullah Mehsud, for the attack. Officials said Haji Namdar and is armed religious groups had links with the Taliban and was said to have fought along with the Taliban in the past.

The blast targeted a lashkar (volunteer militia) in the Batmalani, about 40-kilometres northeast of agency headquarters Khar. “Two to three hundred members of the lashkar were finalising their strategy after demolishing houses of Taliban when the blast occurred,” said local police official Fazal-e-Rabi. Malik Rahimullah, a tribal elder, said the explosion occurred as soon as armed contingents began to move. Among the dead were lashkar head Malak Fazal Karim and his aides Malak Wazir Khan and Malak Sakhi. Officials initially said it appeared that a remote-controlled bomb was used, but later said body parts of an apparent suicide bomber were found, and that witnesses said they saw a young man rushing into the crowd.
