Major General Shaukat Sultan, spokesperson for the Pakistan Army, said helicopters attacked the camps after reports of 25 to 30 local and foreign militants there. "I can't give you the exact number of casualties but most of them were believed killed," he said, adding that three of the five camps were destroyed. A military statement said ‘foreign terrorists and local facilitators’ were occupying a complex of five camps in the mountain forest of Zamazola which is located opposite Barmal district in the Afghan province of Paktika.

Pakistan Army helicopter gun-ships attacked a suspected militant hideout in South Waziristan early on January 16-morning, killing at least 20 militants, according to Dawn. Helicopter gun-ships reportedly targeted a cluster of compounds at Salamt village in the Zamzola area, 30km to the east of Razmak in South Waziristan. Officials said that the compounds situated in a desolate area were completely destroyed, killing most of the people inside. "This used to be an Arab-dominated hideout… But as of now, we don't know whether any of them has been killed," one official said. Another official, citing intelligence reports, said some 25 militants had been killed and bodies of eight of them had been retrieved from underneath the rubble. Of the eight, five were stated to be Afghans and three locals from the Kikari Mehsud tribe inhabiting the Ludda sub-district of South Waziristan.

A Frontier Corps soldier was killed and at least two others sustained injuries when helicopter gun-ships from the US-led coalition forces bombed a Pakistani border post in the remote Shawal area in North Waziristan on January 22-afternoon, according to The News. The Pakistan Government reportedly lodged a strong protest and asked the coalition forces to investigate the matter and take necessary measures that such incidents are not repeated. However, a US military spokesperson earlier said the incident occurred in Afghanistan. Colonel Paul Fitzpatrick in a statement said he cannot confirm or deny loss or injury of Pakistani military.

Clashes between foreign al Qaeda militants and pro-Government tribesmen in South Waziristan have left 110 people dead, Interior Minister Aftab Sherpao told Daily Times on March 21. Sherpao said that 84 Uzbek militants and 17 local tribesmen, including nine civilians, had been killed during three days of fighting. Another 83 Uzbeks have been captured by the tribal forces, he said, adding that the Government has not intervened in the clashes. However, witnesses in Wana told Daily Times that the Army had fired artillery rounds from the Zarinoor base at the Uzbek militants’ positions in Azam Warsak and Sheen Warsak and gunship helicopters were hovering over the area. However, Army spokesman Maj Gen Waheed Arshad said he had no information that artillery was being used against the foreign militants. The report further added that Maulvi Nazir is leading the battle against foreign militants for the first time since they crossed over from Afghanistan after the United States invasion. The clashes were spreading from Azam Warsak and Kaloosha to areas like Karikot. Uzbek militants are being supported by key commanders of the late Taliban leader Nek Muhammad and they have taken control of a school in Karikot and all schools have been closed for an indefinite period, tribesmen arriving in Tank city from Wana told Daily Times. Security officials said the clashes began with the killing of Saiful Adil, an Arab fighter whose body was found a few days ago. "Maulvi Nazir supports the Arabs and suspected that the Uzbeks had murdered Adil," the officials said. They said that Nazir’s men attacked two private jails operated by Uzbek militants in Azam Warsak early on March 21, adding that the tribesmen killed more than 20 Uzbeks and rescued four local prisoners. Residents of Wana arriving in Tank city claimed that they had seen "Punjabi Taliban" fighting alongside Nazir’s men, but their claims could not be confirmed. Former Federally Administered Tribal Area security chief Brigadier (retired)) Mehmood Shah said the Government should take advantage of the situation by covertly or overtly supporting the tribesmen. Meanwhile, a jirga led by Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) Member of National Assembly Maulana Mirajuddin is heading towards Wana to negotiate a cease-fire between the warring factions.

The Army and the paramilitary Frontier Corps were patrolling the streets of Parachinar and gunship helicopters were over-flying the city to intercept combatants. Kurram Agency’s political agent, Sahibzada Mohammad Anis, told The News that negotiations were being held with leaders from the Sunni and Shia communities to secure a truce.

At least ten militants were reportedly killed and several others injured during helicopter raids by the security forces at Degan village in North Waziristan on August 7-morning, according to The News. Military spokesperson Major General Waheed Arshad told Dawn that the operation commenced at 5:00am when artillery and Cobra helicopters targeted two compounds of the militants. "The militants used to regroup and prepare attacks on security forces and take refuge at these compounds," he disclosed. Militants inside the compound fired back, but they were "wiped out" in the four-hour attack, he added.

At least 15 people were reported to have died after army’s helicopter gun-ships attacked the Degan village in North Waziristan on August 9-evening following a roadside bomb blast which left four soldiers injured, according to Dawn. Army spokesperson Major General Waheed Arshad informed that army helicopters chased the militants – who were carrying rocket launchers and small arms – as they fled after carrying out the bombing into a petrol station and later in their vehicles, according to The News. Helicopters reportedly bombed residential compounds and other infrastructure, destroying a petrol pump and five vehicles. While witnesses claimed that most of the people killed in the air strike were ordinary tribesmen, an unnamed official spokesman insisted that most of those killed were militants. The four soldiers were wounded when a bomb exploded near the Boya checkpoint on the Miranshah-Datakhel road. Residents said a military convoy was on way to Miranshah when one of the vehicles in the convoy struck a bomb near the checkpoint.

Seven soldiers were killed and 18 others sustained injuries on August 24 in North Waziristan in four militant attacks, including two suicide bombings targeting the same Pakistan Army convoy at two different places, according to The News. One of the suicide bombers rammed his explosives-laden vehicle into the military convoy near the Qamar Picket built on a roadside hill near the Mir Ali town, killing five soldiers and injuring 10 others. Cobra gunship helicopters reportedly attacked suspected militant hideouts later but reports about any loss of life were not available. The same convoy, which had come from Bannu in the North West Frontier Province and was on its way to Razmak, was attacked once more when it proceeded further. Another suicide bomber riding a vehicle struck the convoy near Asadkhel village on the road to Razmak, killing two soldiers and injuring two others. Villagers in Qutabkhel said gunship helicopters shelled the area after the attack on the military convoy. Military officials were later quoted as saying that two militants were killed by the troops in retaliatory firing. The third convoy to be attacked was reportedly transporting troops from the paramilitary Frontier Corps (FC) from Qutabkhel to Miranshah, the headquarters of North Waziristan. Three FC personnel were wounded in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack that targeted the convoy.

Military spokesperson, Major General Waheed Arshad, stated that Pakistan Army gunship helicopters and artillery were used in the operation against the militants, who had established their hideouts in the Shawal area and involved in attacks on military convoys. "From our ground sources, we learnt that 40 militants were killed in the operation," he disclosed. However, a purported spokesman for Taliban militants in North Waziristan said he knew of no operation. "We have no reports of any such operation nor did we hear of the loss of so many comrades," Ahmedullah Ahmed told Daily Times.

Taliban militants attacked a military base near the Afghan border on September 13, leading to an encounter with the security forces in which at least 50 militants and two soldiers were killed, according to Dawn. Eight soldiers were wounded in the clashes. Military spokesperson Major General Waheed Arshad said security forces repelled repeated militant attacks. Army helicopters and ground fire destroyed four militant positions, he added. He said the army’s initial estimate was that at least 30 militants were killed, but added later that tribesmen informed officials that up to 50 militants had died in the military attack. He dismissed a claim by militants that they had killed over 100 soldiers in the region in the past two days as "totally false" and "baseless". As reported earlier, the security forces also killed around 40 militants on September 12.
