According to residents of the area, terrorists had been suspecting him to be an informer of the security forces. In a separate incident in Srinagar, terrorists lobbed a hand grenade at a picket of the Border Security Force (BSF) in the Soura area. However, no loss of life or injuries was reported as the grenade missed the intended target and exploded at a distance.

Left-wing extremists—Naxalites—of the People’s War Group (PWG) set ablaze a private bus bound for Hyderabad from Guntur at Gamalapadu, Dachepalli mandal (administrative unit), Guntur district, on January 17. The bus, introduced recently, was a very special attraction for commuters between Hyderabad and Guntur as it was an air-conditioned sleeper coach with 24 berths. In the same district, Naxalites of the PWG blasted the clinic of a registered medical practitioner at Dachepalli. Police sources said the Naxalites planted explosives and blasted the two- room clinic of K Nageswar Rao, suspecting him to be a police informer.

A senior activist of the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) was beaten to death by left-wing extremists—Naxalites—of the People’s War Group (PWG) at Kambalapalli of Chandampet mandal (administrative unit), Nalgonda district on February 9. The Naxalites also reportedly assaulted three persons of the same village. According to police sources, approximately 30 armed Naxalites, including eight women, reached the village and took away the victim into the forest area. He was beaten to death on the suspicion that he was acting as police informer. Later, the Naxalites went round the village and threatened that those who act as police informers would meet with the same fate.

Media reports said approximately 40 Naxalites went to the house of TDP leader Gangi Reddy and called his family members out. The Naxalites reportedly beat up Reddy branding him as police informer. Subsequently, they planted explosives and blasted the house. Separately, the Naxalites went to the telephone exchange and asked the owner of a grocery shop, housed in the same building, to vacate and later set fire to the building. Media reports said a group of 10 Naxalites of the Lathakka dalam (squad) of the PWG went to the house of their former comrade, Allam Ramesh, and killed him after asking him to come out of the house. Enraged at the killing, irate villagers staged a road blockade at Mulug mandal headquarters. They also raised slogans against the PWG.
