The Hindu reports that the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres ambushed a Police team at a court premises in the Lakhisarai District in the afternoon of June 23 and freed Misir Besra, a member of the Central Military Commission (CMC) and Politbureau of the banned CPI-Maoist, after shooting a Policeman dead and hurling bombs to scare away people. The District Development Commissioner Rajiv Ranjan, who was sitting in his office adjacent to the court complex, sustained splinter injuries as bombs were hurled freely by nearly 30 Maoists who entered the court premises on motorcycles, S.K. Bhardwaj, the Inspector-General of Police (Operations), said on the phone. The ambush of the Police team took place when Besra was being taken out of the court. The Maoists also snatched away a carbine and two rifles from the Police escort team. The District borders were later sealed and a massive manhunt was launched. “The Police located them near a river on the town outskirts and were chased by Policemen travelling in a Mine Proof Vehicle (MPV). However, the motorcyclists drove through the river and the MPV could not follow them. But the police managed to nab two Maoists and seize two motorcycles,” Bhardwaj said.

Four India Reserve Battalion (IRB) personnel were killed and four wounded in an ambush on a hilly road of Ngakha hill in the Imphal East District in the morning of September 12, reports Telegraph. The SFs deployed at Maphou dam on the tri-junction of Imphal East, Thoubal and Ukhrul Districts, were moving in a Gypsy and a bullet-proof truck when they came under heavy fire from militants sitting atop Ngakha hill. The attack came as the vehicles were negotiating a corner, 10 kilometres from the dam site, around 10.30am (IST). The militants used rocket launchers, lethod guns and other sophisticated weapons to target the vehicles. The militants snatched an Insas rifle, an AK-47 rifle and a self-loading rifle before retreating into the hills. Rifleman Yumnam Sanayaima, who survived the attack, said, "About 100 militants occupying the upper portion of the hills fired at us. We retaliated and the exchange of fire continued for an hour. But we were far outnumbered." He said the militants first fired two rocket launchers. The first one exploded after hitting the rear portion of the truck, which was following the Gypsy. The second rocket failed to explode. The deceased IRB personnel were identified as riflemen Khangembam Nanda, Amuchou Singh, Vicky Singh and Ashing. The Police suspect the Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) was behind the ambush.

The militants shot dead two Special Police Officers (SPOs) and managed to decamp with their weapons at Shikri Top in Marmat area of Doda District in the evening of September 18, according to Daily Excelsior. Senior Superintendent of Police of Doda District said that three SPOs, who were on way back home at Gajot from Sadak post in hilly Marmat area of Doda District, were intercepted by a group of five to seven militants at Shikri Top at 5 pm (IST). The militants had laid a ‘C’ type ambush for the SPOs from thick growth of vegetation. Two SPOs were killed on spot while third one managed to survive taking cover behind the crops. As Police personnel from their Sadak post and Security Forces (SFs) rushed to the spot, the militants managed to escape. SFs have launched a massive search operation in the area to arrest the militants suspected to be cadres of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit. The SPOs killed in the firing were identified as Abdul Gani and Riaz Ahmad, residents of Gajot. Another SPO, Mohammad Yaqoob, managed to survive with minor bruises and later informed Police and SFs about the ambush. The militants also took away one Insas rifle, a pistol and three mobile telephones from slain SPOs while Yaqoob saved his AK-47 rifle. According to sources, the killing of SPOs was a possible retaliation by the militants to the elimination of their over 20 top associates in Doda District during last three months.

Suspected Hmar militants from Manipur attacked a Police outpost at Chekerchum under Dholai Police Station in Cachar District in the night of November 13 and injured five Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) personnel and looted a huge quantity of arms and ammunition, reports Sentinel. The militants abducted five persons from the adjacent Khasia punji area. They also abducted a medical compounder for treatment of the injuries they sustained during the attack on the outpost. Five injured IRB personnel were identified as Kamrul Islam Barbhuiyan, Vijay Kumar Roy, Iqbal Ahmed Tapadhar, Prafulla Dey and Babul Hussain Barbhuiyan. They were shifted to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) at 8 am November 14 (today) by a Police team that rushed to the spot after receiving a wireless message from the injured personnel. An SMCH source said the condition of Kamrul Islam is critical. A bullet was removed from his head. The militants took away two 9 mm carbines, two 762 LMGs, one mortar, six .9mm-calibre magazines, 12 high explosive bombs, six smoke bombs, six hand grenades, 5,445 cartridges, 42 SLR magazines, 20 SLRs and one automatic pistol. The militants also damaged wireless sets and snatched away six mobile phone sets, money and uniform. A top-ranking Police official said local villagers might have joined the militants. He suspected that it was the handiwork of the Hmar People’s Democratic Convention (HPDC), a Hmar militant outfit active in Manipur, the adjacent border area to Cachar.
