A joint team of the Manipur Police and Assam Rifles shot dead the leader of the Azad faction of the People’s United Liberation Front (PULF) and three other cadres of the outfit during a pre-dawn encounter in the foothills of Tekhanbi Kachin in the Imphal East District on March 7, according to Telegraph. The four slain PULF cadres included the ‘chairman’ of the faction, Mohammed Azad alias Abul Kalam, ‘finance secretary’, Mohammed Sahid alias Raj Khan, Mohammed Firoz Khan, and Mohammed Azad Khan Shekhar alias Ijaaj Khan. Two AK-56 rifles with 17 live rounds of ammunition, one lethod gun with two shells, a 9mm pistol with two live rounds of ammunition and two Chinese hand grenades were recovered from the possession of the slain militants. The Superintendent of Police of Imphal East District, Th. The killing of the leader of the Azad faction came in the wake of arrest of Mohammed Tabe alias Umar Qazi alias Umar Bin Ushman, ‘chairman’ of the Umar Farooq faction of the PULF, from Maharashtra on March 5. Radheshyam Singh said a joint team of the Imphal East District Police and troops of the 12 Maratha Light Infantry, assisted by Mumbai Police, arrested the leader from his shop at Godhgaon in the Raigarh District of Maharashtra. The Superintendent of Police said Qazi owned the shop and operated from Mumbai through his cadres in Manipur. The joint team also arrested the ‘chief project officer’ of the Umar Farooq faction, R.K.
